Understanding LED lightingIn this day and age it’s more important than ever to make informed purchases, we have to consider the product, its impact on our pockets and its effects on the environment. The problem is we often assume that what’s on the back of the box is right for us.

In this booklet we will touch upon some of the important aspects of lighting and LEDs. We want you to make informed purchases from us that save you money on your bills and helps preserve the environment.

We’ve taken the current average UK electricity rate of 15p kWh, and the most commonly used 60w Standard Bulb to

determine the base rate. We’ve used the closest LED match to a 60w Standard Bulb and calculated the savings

from this. Calculations based on a 28 day month and 4.6 watt GU10 Bulbs or similar. Savings vary

depending on electricity supplier.

Things you need to know What is a Watt? The wattage is the value given to the amount of power consumed by the light bulb itself. So, a 50-watt halogen spotlight bulb will use 50 watts of power. If you have 6 x 50-watt halogen spots in your kitchen then you will be using 300 watts of power. If you were using replacement LED lights at 4 watts each you would be using 24 watts of power, resulting in huge energy savings.

What is a Lumen? For years, people have chosen light bulbs by wattage, learning over time about how bright a typical 40-watt or 60-watt bulb is. But wattage tells you only how much energy a bulb uses - not how bright it is.

With LED light bulbs designed to use less energy, wattage is no longer a reliable way to gauge a light bulb’s brightness. Brightness is measured in Lumens. With LED spotlights there is more to it than a direct Lumen value comparison with the halogen equivalent. The superior light quality given off by LEDs and much lower bulb degradation rate over time must also be taken into account. This is why the Lumen output for a 50-watt replacement LED spotlight is often less than that quoted for a 50-watt halogen spot bulb.

What does Voltage mean? This is a measurement of the volts required to operate the bulb. The standard for the UK is 240 volts. This means that you can plug all 240v rated bulbs directly into existing fittings without changing any of the electrics.

Cool White (5000k)

What does colour temperature mean?Colour temperature is a measure of how warm or cool the light given off by a bulb appears. ‘Warm’ colours appear tinged with yellow and generally feel soft and suitable for areas of comfort. Cool colours are tinged with blue and appear whiter, making them a more ‘honest’ and unforgiving light more suitable for bathroom or working environments than relaxing. Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). The lower the colour temperature value in Kelvin, the warmer the colour so higher values refer to cooler colours.

What does the beam angle mean? The beam angle is how wide the light is spread from the lens of the bulb. If you have a very narrow beam angle your light will be projected like a handheld torch whereas if you have a wide beam angle it will be much softer and spread like a traditional bulb. Wide beam angles are best for living areas such as living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms where you are looking for a softer light and narrow beam angles for targeting specific areas or for decoration.

My dimmer switch isn’t working with my LED lights? This may be due to a couple of reasons:

1) Your LED bulbs may not be dimmable. Not all LED light bulbs have the ability to dim so you must make sure that your bulbs are the dimmable type.

2) Ensure that you have an LED-compatible dimmer switch. Standard dimmer switches do not work with LED bulbs. Dimmable LED bulbs will only operate effectively with a trailing edge LED dimmer switch.

Why do I need an LED-compatible transformer? You may only need a transformer if you are buying 12v bulbs - MR16, G4 and MR11. All 240 bulbs do not

require a transformer.

Standard electronic transformers can cause certain types of LED bulbs to flicker, resulting in permanent

long-term damage to the LED bulb itself. This problem is most evident in 12v MR16 LED bulbs where a

standard transformer does not provide a smooth flow of current, causing flickering problems. To avoid

damaging your new LED bulbs it is always best to use LED drivers/transformers.

LED light bulbs operate at around 80% efficiency, compared to an incandescent bulb that is only

10% efficient. This means that an LED bulb converts 80% of its electricity into light energy. These

huge power savings lead to massive reductions in your electricity bills.

LEDs work at a much lower temperature than standard bulbs. In fact they give off virtually no heat at

all which makes them highly energy efficient.

FAQs Which Colour Option Should I Choose?A number of our bulbs come with the colour option Warm White and Cool White. Warm White is similar to conventional lighting and has a softer feel. Warm White is perfect for areas such as living rooms and bedrooms.

Cool White is a brighter, whiter light and is more suited for the Bathroom and Kitchen.

Will LED bulbs fit into my old light fixtures?Yes, all our bulbs are designed to be a perfect fit to replace your old halogens unless it is other wise stated in the product description.

Any fittings being placed within a bathroom/wet room/shower room should not only be Fire Rated but also be waterproof and hold a suitable certification of IP65 or higher in order to be compliant with relevant building regulations for bathrooms.

Do I need an LED-compatible transformer? You may only need a transformer if you are buying 12v bulbs. All 240 bulbs do not require a transformer, 12v bulbs are MR16, G4 and MR11.

Standard electronic transformers can cause certain types of LED bulbs to flicker, resulting in permanent long-term damage to the LED bulb itself. This problem is most evident in 12V MR16 LED bulbs where a standard transformer does not provide a smooth flow of current, causing flickering problems. To avoid damaging your new LED bulbs it is always best to use LED drivers/transformers.

Can LED light bulbs be used with dimmers? Yes, certain types of LED bulbs are dimmable. For standard household dimmers you need a trailing edge or low voltage LED dimmer switch.

Do LED light bulbs switch on immediately or do they have to warm up? LED bulbs are instant on, which means they do not require any time to warm up. Also, LED bulbs do not give off any potentially harmful IR or UV emissions.

Does the level of light produced reduce over the lifetime of the LED bulb? Yes, the level of illumination does decrease over the life span of an LED bulb. However due to their extremely long life cycle, this is barely noticeable.

What are the best features of LED lights? In short, LED lights are the future of household and office lighting, with a number of great features, including:

• Extremely energy efficient• Eco-friendly lighting• Significant savings on your electricity bills• Much longer lifespan than halogen bulbs• Low temperature operation• Directional light• Low profile and compact size• Breakage and vibration resistance• Life unaffected by rapid cycling• Instant switch on with no warm up time• No IR or UV emissions
