Technical Paper: Writing Style
Formal Writing Style! No words like:
I wanna test the algorithms. It is kinda hard.
We didnt consider all parameters in our tests.
We are frustrated.
Once upon a time,
Be Clear & Concise
Dont be: Long-winded dont use long sentences!
Short and clear sentences are great!
Go straight to the point.
Note: I will talk more about writing style and organization in PART 2.

Authorship: Names on Paper
Know the contributors!
General Rule of Thumb: First Author: Main contributor of paper! Did >50% of work!
2nd Author: The person whose contributions are inferior to the firstauthor.
3rdAuthor: The third person .
and so on.
List according to level/degree of involvement and contributions!
Corresponding Author: The person whom the Editor-in-chief will contact about the paper.
Usually, the corresponding author is also the first author.
Quiz: John contributed the most to the research but Jane wrote the paper. So, who should be first author and who should be corresponding author?
17
NCKU EECS College: International Forum Seminar Series for Graduate Students
Authorship: Names on Paper
Professor / Student: Discuss who should be 1st or 2nd author
Usually, student is the 1st author but depends (explain why)
Ethics: Do not include names of other people if they have not
contributed to the research and paper! (explain why)
Teamwork:
For a big project - done by many people Then, it is alright to put team members in the paper, but in the
order of contributions.
That is, the people who have contributed more their nameswill be in front!

Essentially, If reviewers cannot enjoy reading your paper, other readers
will not too!!
If people cannot understand your English, they would not beable to understand your research either.
