Did you know?Did you know?If you try to taste an orange juice and a grapefruit juice with your eyes closed.
You won't be able to tell the difference.
The entire body of an earthworm is covered with chemoreceptors.
(It Tastes the dirt…literally)
Blowflies taste with 3,000 sensory hairs on their feet.
Did you know?Did you know?
The silkworm moth can detect pheromones up to 11 km. away! (almost 7 miles for us Yanks)
The term for Human Flesh is "Long-Pig" (Because it tastes like Salty Pork)
The Ave Life of a Taste Bud is 10 days. (then they’re replaced by tentacles)
Don't Ask...
Smell: Olfactory Make note of these Structures
Smell: Outside In
Mucus layer: Is the layer of SNOT (anatomical term) that traps chemicals that are the smell particles
Olfactory hairs: Extensions of the Receptor Cells receive the chemicals
Olfactory Filaments: Just like a Telephone wire send the message to the Olfactory Bulb Signal Direction
Smell: Outside In
Olfactory Bulb: Is large and collects the signals and relays them to the Tract
Olfactory Tract: (Cranial Nerve I) Gathers the signals and tells the brain there is a stink in the air.
Limbic System: Emotional-visceral portion of the brain interprets the info:
“I have not showered in 3 days make excuse to leave room and do so.” *self-note use Loofah* Signal Direction
Smell: The Breakdown The Boiled Stench of Skunk Stink is Sprayed
The Signal is gathered by the Olfactory Bulb
Olfactory Receptors pick up the Chemicals
The Signal is Relayed through the Cribiform Plate by the Olfactory Filaments (remember the holes in the skull?)
Signal is sent down Cranial Nerve I (The Olfactory Tract)
The Brain Translates this using the Limbic System
Damn Skunk!! You go Man vs. Wild and trap, skin and eat the sucker!
And the World is good again…
Taste: Taste Make note of these Structures
Taste: Outside In
Tongue: Home of the Taste Buds (only 2/3 is seen)
*contains roughly 6 muscles*
Taste Buds: Number Around 10,000 and cover 2/3’s the tongue.
Papilla: 2 Kinds
Fungiform (Most Numerous) & Circumvallate
Taste: Outside In Gustatory Hairs: Stimulation of these long microvilli send a signal to larger cells.
Gustatory Cells: Signal from the Hairs send a wave of depolarization to sensory nerves.
Sensory Nerves: Cranial Nerves VII, IX & X (7, 9 & 10: for those of you not Roman) are stimulated.
Taste: The Breakdown Your favorite brand of Sea Lion Manapua is eaten
The Signal is gathered by the Sensory Nerves
Saliva: Breaks down the material & you chew
The material is sent to the Taste buds
Signal is sent down Cranial Nerve VII, IX & X ( 7, 9 & 10)
The Brain Translates this
Yummy!! You go Man vs. Food and eat 25 in one sitting only to vomit from eating too much!
And the World is good again…
Gustatory cells are stimulated by the Gus. Hairs
Tastes: 5 different kinds• Sweet: Triggered by shapes of sugar, sugar,
saccharine and amino acids saccharine and amino acids • Sour: Triggered by H+ groupsH+ groups (acids)• Salty: Triggered by Ionic compoundsIonic compounds (salts)
*seriously*
• Bitter: Triggered by Alkaloids –OH groupsAlkaloids –OH groups • Umami: Triggered by AminosAminos and is
described as “The Savory Taste” (Japanese discovered this little bad boy thus the name)
Did you know?
Everyone has his or her own unique odor-identity or “smell fingerprint”.“smell fingerprint”.
A woman’s sense of smell is keener than a man’s.A woman’s sense of smell is keener than a man’s.
According to my GF its to better sense when I’m being According to my GF its to better sense when I’m being a d-bag…*awesome*college grad.a d-bag…*awesome*college grad.
But I looked it up? And it happens to coincide with her menstrual cycle = when she is most fertile she is most sensitive to smells.
It's a mating thing.
Did you know? The Candiru' fish can smell urine, follow the trail and swim up your urethra and embed itself with its spiked fins (its ave length is 3 inches long). And the only way you're getting that bad boy out is by surgery.
Never fear its in the AmazonNever fear its in the Amazon.Taste is 75% smell
ALL ALL the scents in the world are created by 7 conglomerate companies and then sold to "brands." (Capitalism ~HOORAY~ )
Did you know?Lions, Tigers, and cat pee contain an amino acid (protein) that makes it damn funky. This is how they mark their territory.
Did you know?40%40% of the dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells than
that of a human! Humans = Smell Receptors: 5 million
German Shepard = Smell Receptors: 225 millionBloodhound = Smell Receptors: 300 million
What we see… What they see…
Next time: WE LAB!!!
Taste:
Whale Vomit, Donkey Blubber, Wombat Chowder, Pickled Sea Snake & Many More Exciting things I’ve found!
Wait! What about SMELL!?!?!
I’ve got something's in store for that too…
