Lecture 3: 2D Frame Analysis

There is a frame shown in figure. The frame is subjected to a uniform load and a point load. Analyze the

frame using STAAD Pro and draw the SFD and BMD. Find the support reactions.

Steps:

1. Open STAAD Pro, select space/ plane, input file name select units and click next. After that click add beam

and finish.

2. Close the snap node window at right and give the co-ordinates of all ffour nodes if the frame as shown in

figure.

3. Draw beams from node to node using the add beam command.

4. Now click on the support command, create the fixed support and assign to the structure.

5. Now click on the property command and define the beam dimension and then assign to the beams.

6. Click on the load & definition command and add new load- live load.

7. Now define two new live loads that are one point load and one uniform load.

8. Assign both load to the structure by selecting the beam then the load then clicking assign to selected beam and

assign.

9. The loads values can be shown be selecting load values in diagram command.

10. Now click on the analysis/ print command and click add. Then run analysis.

11. In post processing mode you can see the SFD, BMD, support reactions, deflections.

12. If the diagram is too small or invisible you have to reduce the scale factor to view.
