ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਤਸਖੁ ਅਖਾਏ ਸੁ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਤਿ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਆਵੈ ॥

One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name.

ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਭਲਕੇ ਪਰਭਾਿੀ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਮਿਿ ਸਤਰ ਨਾਵ ੈ॥

Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar.

ਉਪਦੇਤਸ ਗੁਰ ੂਹਤਰ ਹਤਰ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਤਭ ਤਕਲਤਵਖ ਪਾਪ ਦੋਖ ਲਤਹ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased.

ਤਿਤਰ ਚੜੈ ਤਦਵਸੁ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵ ੈਬਹਤਦਆ ਉਿਤਦਆ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਆਵ ੈ॥

Then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani; whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord's Name.

ਜੋ ਸਾਤਸ ਤਗਰਾਤਸ ਤਿਆਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਤਰ ਹਤਰ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਤਸਖੁ ਗੁਰ ੂਮਤਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

One who meditates on my Lord, Har, Har, does Sasgras - that GurSikh becomes pleasing to the Guru's Mind.

ਤਜਸ ਨੋ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਤਸਖ ਗੁਰ ੂਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥

That person, unto whom my Lord and Master is kind and compassionate - upon that GurSikh, the Guru's Teachings are bestowed.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਿੂਤੜ ਮੰਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਤਸਖ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਆਤਪ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that GurSikh, who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it. ||2||

ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨੁ ਦਹ ਤਦਤਸ ਕਉ ਿਾਵਿ ਅਚਲ ਜਾਤਹ ਿਹਰਾਨੋ ॥

The restless mind wanders in the ten directions - it needs to be pacified and restrained.

ਕਹ ੁਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਤਬਤਿ ਕੋ ਜੋ ਨਰ ੁਮੁਕਤਿ ਿਾਤਹ ਿੁਮ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੨॥੩॥

Says Nanak, whoever knows this technique is judged to be liberated. ||2||3||

We have to Learn to Jap Gurmantra to Control the mind.

ਗੁਰ ਮੰਿਿ ਹੀਣਸ੍੍ ਜ ੋਪਿਾਣੀ ਤਿਿਗੰਿ ਜਨਮ ਭਿਸਟਣਹ ॥ ਕੂਕਰਹ ਸੂਕਰਹ ਗਰਿਭਹ ਕਾਕਹ ਸਰਪਨਹ ਿੁਤਲ ਖਲਹ ॥੩੩ || That mortal who lacks the Guru's Mantra - cursed and contaminated is his life. That blockhead is just a dog, a pig, a jackass, a crow, a snake. ||33||

Guru Loves you and Guru will Mend You.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ੁਤਸਖ ਕੀ ਕਰੈ ਪਿਤਿਪਾਲ ॥ The True Guru cherishes His Sikh. ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਰ ੁਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ The Guru is always merciful to His servant. ਤਸਖ ਕੀ ਗੁਰ ੁਦਰੁਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਤਹਰ ੈ॥ The Guru washes away the filth of the evil intellect of His Sikh. ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਮ ੁਉਚਰੈ ॥ Through the Guru's Teachings, he chants the Lord's Name. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ੁਤਸਖ ਕੇ ਬੰਿਨ ਕਾਟ ੈ॥ The True Guru cuts away the bonds of His Sikh. ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਤਸਖ ੁਤਬਕਾਰ ਿੇ ਹਾਟ ੈ॥ The Sikh of the Guru abstains from evil deeds. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ੁਤਸਖ ਕਉ ਨਾਮ ਿਨੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ The True Guru gives His Sikh the wealth of the Naam. ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਤਸਖ ੁਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹੇ ॥ The Sikh of the Guru is very fortunate. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ੁਤਸਖ ਕਾ ਹਲਿੁ ਪਲਿੁ ਸਵਾਰ ੈ॥ The True Guru arranges this world and the next for His Sikh. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ੁਤਸਖ ਕਉ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਤਲ ਸਮਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ O Nanak, with the fullness of His heart, the True Guru mends His Sikh. ||1||

A Sikh is a Servant

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਤਗਿਤਹ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੋ ਰਹ ੈ॥ That selfless servant, who lives in the Guru's household, ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਤਗਆ ਮਨ ਮਤਹ ਸਹੈ ॥ is to obey the Guru's Commands with all his mind. ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਤਰ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਜਨਾਵ ੈ॥ He is not to call attention to himself in any way. ਹਤਰ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਮ ੁਤਰਦ ੈਸਦ ਤਿਆਵੈ ॥ He is to meditate constantly within his heart on the Name of the Lord. ਮਨੁ ਬੇਚੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪਾਤਸ ॥ One who sells his mind to the True Guru - ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਰਾਤਸ ॥ that humble servant's affairs are resolved. ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਹਇੋ ਤਨਹਕਾਮੀ ॥ One who performs selfless service, without thought of reward, ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥ shall attain his Lord and Master. ਅਪਨੀ ਤਕਿਪਾ ਤਜਸੁ ਆਤਪ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ He Himself grants His Grace; ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੇਇ ॥੨॥ O Nanak, that selfless servant lives the Guru's Teachings. ||2||

We have to give strict adherence on how Guru wants us to live.

ਬੀਸ ਤਬਸਵ ੇਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ One who obeys the Guru's Teachings one hundred per cent -

ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ that selfless servant comes to know the state of the Transcendent Lord.

ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ੁਤਜਸੁ ਤਰਦੈ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਉ ॥ The True Guru's Heart is filled with the Name of the Lord.

ਅਤਨਕ ਬਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਬਤਲ ਜਾਉ ॥ So many times, I am a sacrifice to the Guru.

ਸਰਬ ਤਨਿਾਨ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਦਾਿਾ ॥ He is the treasure of everything, the Giver of life.

ਆਿ ਪਹਰ ਪਾਰਬਿਹਮ ਰੰਤਗ ਰਾਿਾ ॥ Twenty-four hours a day, He is imbued with the Love of the Supreme Lord God.

ਬਿਹਮ ਮਤਹ ਜਨੁ ਜਨ ਮਤਹ ਪਾਰਬਿਹਮੁ ॥ The servant is in God, and God is in the servant.

ਏਕਤਹ ਆਤਪ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਭਰਮੁ ॥ He Himself is One - there is no doubt about this.

ਸਹਸ ਤਸਆਨਪ ਲਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ By thousands of clever tricks, He is not found.

ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸਾ ਗੁਰ ੁਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੩॥ O Nanak, such a Guru is obtained by the greatest good fortune. ||3||

Why people do simran and never get anywhere?

ਸਤਭ ਜਪ ਸਤਭ ਿਪ ਸਭ ਚਿੁਰਾਈ ॥

All meditation, all austerities, and all clever tricks,

ਊਝਤੜ ਭਰਮ ੈਰਾਤਹ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

lead one to wander in the wilderness, but he does not find the Path.

ਤਬਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

Without understanding, he is not approved;

ਨਾਮ ਤਬਹਣੈੂ ਮਾਥੇ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥

without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, ashes are thrown upon one's head. ||1||

ਸਾਚ ਿਣੀ ਜਗੁ ਆਇ ਤਬਨਾਸਾ ॥

True is the Master; the world comes and goes.

ਛੂਟਤਸ ਪਿਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਤਖ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The mortal is emancipated, as Gurmukh, as the Lord's slave. ||1||Pause||

Those people have not left their desire or attachments.

The people have not left Maya - Physically or mentally.

No Naam until attachment is burned.

ਜਗੁ ਮੋਤਹ ਬਾਿਾ ਬਹਿੁੀ ਆਸਾ ॥ The world is bound by its attachments to the many desires.

ਗੁਰਮਿੀ ਇਤਕ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥ Through the Guru's Teachings, some become free of desire.

ਅੰਿਤਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥ Within them is the Naam, and their heart lotus blossoms forth.

ਤਿਨਹਹ੍ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਿਿਾਸਾ ॥੨॥ They have no fear of death. ||2||

ਜਗੁ ਤਿਿਅ ਤਜਿੁ ਕਾਮਤਣ ਤਹਿਕਾਰੀ ॥ The men of the world are conquered by woman; they love the ladies.

ਪੁਿਿ ਕਲਿਿ ਲਤਗ ਨਾਮ ੁਤਵਸਾਰੀ ॥ Attached to children and wife, they forget the Naam.

ਤਬਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥ They waste this human life in vain, and lose the game in the gamble.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ੁਸੇਵੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥ Serving the True Guru is the best occupation. ||3||

We are a brotherhood and sisterhood who use Guru to Support one another. Boasters don’t help - we need Sikhs who love Naam.

ਬਾਹਰਹ ੁਹਉਮੈ ਕਹ ੈਕਹਾਏ ॥ One who speaks egotistically in public,

ਅੰਦਰਹ ੁਮੁਕਿੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦ ੇਨ ਲਾਏ ॥ never attains liberation within.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ੁਗੁਰ ਸਬਤਦ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ One who burns away his attachment to Maya, by the Word of the Guru's Shabad,

ਤਨਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਤਹਰਦੈ ਤਿਆਏ ॥੪॥ meditates forever within his heart on the Immaculate Naam. ||4||

ਿਾਵਿੁ ਰਾਖ ੈਿਾਤਕ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ He restrains his wandering mind, and keeps it under control.

ਤਸਖ ਸਗੰਤਿ ਕਰਤਮ ਤਮਲਾਏ ॥ The company of such a Sikh is obtained only by Grace.

ਗੁਰ ਤਬਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਆਵ ੈਜਾਏ ॥ Without the Guru, he goes astray and continues coming and going.

ਨਦਤਰ ਕਰ ੇਸੰਜੋਤਗ ਤਮਲਾਏ ॥੫॥ Bestowing His Mercy, the Lord unites him in Union. ||5||
