Literature Resources

The formal textbook for this course is the biochemistry textbook:

Biochemistry (Berg, Tymoczko, Stryer) 8

Note that all assigned chapters and sections (in the 5th Edition) are available on-line if you

do not possess this text.

How to access textbook Biochemistry (5th Edition, Stryer) on-line.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

2. Go to sidebar on right side of page, under “Popular Resources” click on “Bookshelf”.

3. In the search box at top of page, type in keywords “Stryer” and “Biochemistry”.

Hit enter and the on-line textbook (5th Edition) should be the top hit.

4. Click on top link and page will list all of the chapters in the book.

University closures:

Midterm exams are held in-class. Some exams are preceded by a review lecture which

again is not an obligation for the instructor.

In the event the university is officially closed on the day of a review

lecture or the review class cannot be held for any other reason, the following

exam will still be held on the scheduled date.

That is, even if the review lecture is cancelled due to university closure or for

any other reason, the exam will still proceed as scheduled.

In the event the university is officially closed on the day of a scheduled exam, or

the exam is not held for any other reason, the exam will be held in the next

available class. No other notice of this re-scheduling will be provided.

That is, if the university is closed on the day of an exam, be prepared to write

the exam in the next regularly scheduled class time.

The Purpose and Intent of BIOL 2033

The purpose of this biochemistry course is to expose students to fundamental principles

of the molecular basis of life. Life is a chemical phenomenon. For some students, thecontent of this course will be challenging as atoms, electrons, and such are not

immediately comprehensible to humans in an intuitive sense. If you have trouble

understanding any concept, please be sure to contact me by email for additional help

and discussion. You must however attend all or at least most lectures. If you do not, you

will likely do poorly in this course and I will not be able to help you. Many students have

designs on applying for professional medical schools in the future and as such feel it is

necessary to achieve a minimal mark of “A-“ in the course. Please be aware at the outset

that the historical average in this course is in the B range and the average in other years

with other lecturers has been even lower. Not every student will even achieve this mark.

Please modulate your own individual hopes for a high mark with the realization that this

course cannot be designed such that all students will achieve a mark in the A range. I will

help you achieve the highest mark you can with as much input as I can muster with a

class of over 200 students, but realize I cannot tailor your final mark, whatever that may

be, to your future aspirations and desire for a high mark.

No, I am not. But I cannot alter policies or amend marks on an individual basis.

See you on Monday!
