Our School Philosophy

The headteacher, staff and governors of this school have a common aim in

the establishment of a stimulating place of learning, offering excellent

opportunities to all pupils in a caring environment. To achieve this aim the

headteacher, strongly supported by senior management, will lead the staff in

developing whole school curriculum guidelines.

In an atmosphere of mutual respect, viewing good discipline as an important

part of working together, parents, pupils and staff will be able to build good

relationships. Programmes of work will be designed to lead to success for all

pupils at a level appropriate to their individual ability. Pupils will be

encouraged to have high expectations and their efforts will be valued.

With a sound planning structure in place, the staff will work in partnership

with colleagues, sharing skills and expertise, to provide a wide range of

opportunities across the curriculum and in other areas of school life. Staff

development will have a high priority as teachers take on roles of

responsibility for the education of pupils across a wide age-range.

The contributions of teachers, non-teaching staff, parents and members of

the governing body will be valued and working relationships will develop which

are based on trust and respect. A caring and lively environment will provide

the setting in which each pupil can learn from a wide range of experiences.

Our Educational Aims

Leconfield Primary School believes that it is important to promote the

spiritual, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them

for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

We aim to:

develop lively, enquiring, imaginative and creative minds and children’s

ability to question, argue rationally and apply themselves.

help children to understand that in a democratic society each

individual has obligations to the community as well as rights in it.

help children to realise that our school is a community in which we

endeavour to transmit right values and attitudes.

help children to understand the world in which they live and to

encourage learning by providing a welcoming, friendly and supportive

environment in which Christian values are central to the ethos of the

school and its' teaching.

School Information

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL Leconfield Primary School is located on the A164 between the towns of

Beverley and Driffield. Traditionally our children come from Leconfield, the

surrounding villages and neighbouring DST Leconfield. The school currently

has seven classes. We were inspected by Ofsted in 2013 and were judged to

be a ‘good’ school. To view the report visit www.ofsted.gov.uk .

SCHOOL TIMES 8.45am Children assemble on the playground

8.55am Start of school day

12.00noon - 1.00pm Lunch time

3.30pm End of school day

WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR FOR SCHOOL? The wearing of school uniform is strongly supported by the governors of the

school and helps to foster a sense of pride and belonging in the children.

School uniform at Leconfield Primary consists of:

Grey skirt / trousers, white shirt or polo shirt - girls

Grey trousers / shorts, white shirt or polo shirt - boys

Royal blue sweatshirt or cardigan with the school badge

Summer dress is blue and white

Embroidered sweatshirts, cardigans, printed P.E. t-shirts and book bags with

the school badge are available to buy from the school office.

For P.E. your child will need a school P.E. t-shirt, a black pair of shorts, a pair

of plimsolls and a bag in which to keep them.

Tracksuit bottoms and trainers are recommended for outdoor P.E. during

winter months.

P.E. kits should be brought to school on Monday and taken home for washing

on Friday.

ALL CLOTHING MUST BE CLEARLY LABELLED WITH THE CHILD’S NAME.

JEWELLERY

For safety reasons, we ask that children do not wear jewellery at school.

Children arriving at school with earrings other than studs will be asked to

remove them. Stud earrings must be removed for PE. If this is not possible

parents should send surgical tape to school to cover the studs. We cannot

take responsibility if your child is injured because they are wearing

jewellery, or for the loss of any jewellery or other valuable items.

INDOOR SHOES All children need to bring shoes to wear inside. Plimsolls are ideal. For

safety reasons we do not allow children to wear slippers.

VISITING ARRANGEMENTS Parents are warmly invited to visit the school at any time; although an

appointment made first through the school office is usually of advantage to

both parties.

MEALS AT SCHOOL We run our own kitchen. Meals are cooked by our own cook on the premises.

Our wonderful kitchen team source fresh ingredients locally and also use

vegetables and fruits grown in our school garden. Throughout the year we

have themed lunch days to celebrate and recognise special events. Last year

we enjoyed Bonfire, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Pancake Day and Easter

themed lunches as well as an outdoor Sports Day picnic. For these special

lunches we decorate our tables with candles (battery powered!) and have

special music to match our theme. We have lots of ideas for some new

themed lunches such as World Book Day and Diwali which we will plan

throughout the year. Lunch is served in the hall. We offer a choice of a hot

meal or a sandwich option. Children may choose from a range of sandwich

fillings (ham, cheese, tuna, egg etc.) and are also given a baked savoury

biscuit snack, dessert and drink. Vegetables are served with all hot meals.

In addition a salad bar is available every day stocked with a range of fruit,

Page 8: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

salad and vegetables for children to choose. Bread and yoghurts are also

available, all of which provides a nutritious and balanced diet. Menus are

sent home each month so children and parents are able to choose the meals

they would like. Our meals are extremely popular with children and staff

alike so it is essential that completed menus are returned to school promptly

to ensure that we are able to provide the correct number of meals. From

September 2014 all infant children (children in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2) are

entitled to a free school meal every day as part of the Government Universal

Infant Free School Meal provision. Children in Key Stage 2 will pay for their

meals. Completed menus should be returned to the school office with the

appropriate money. Please contact the school office for current meal prices.

Lunch money is collected on Mondays. Please send the money or cheque

(payable to ERYC) in a sealed envelope labelled with your child’s name and

amount enclosed.

If you prefer, children may bring their own packed lunch to school. Children

having a packed lunch will eat in the hall with children having a school lunch.

We promote healthy eating in our school. Please do not send chocolate bars,

sweets, glass bottles or fizzy drinks.

SCHOOL FRUIT We promote healthy eating and children are allowed to eat fruit at morning

break. We provide a piece of fruit all infant children each day and children

in KS2 are encouraged to bring a piece of fruit from home.

SCHOOL ADMISSIONS The admission arrangements follow the Local Authority’s published policy.

Please contact the school office for more information.

ABSENCES Please telephone the school before 9.30am if your child is absent. Forms

are available from the school office for planned absences. If your child has

to leave school during the day a parent or carer must sign the signing out

book. Please call at the school office to complete the process: it is

important that the office staff know if your child is on or off the premises.

Page 9: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014 2015

Page 9

If a child returns to school during the day, they must be signed in.

Children’s education can easily be seriously disrupted and parents should

consider very carefully before taking their child out of school for a holiday.

The headteacher is not permitted to authorise holidays taken in term time.

The school has adopted the Local Authority’s published policy. In

accordance with the policy, parents may be fined by the Local Authority if

there is persistent absence or time is taken for holidays during term time.

Please contact the school office for more information.

Absences which are excessive or cannot be adequately explained will be

reported to the Education Welfare Service, who will take appropriate action,

since attendance at school is a legal obligation.

Welfare of Children

ILLNESS & MEDICATION Children are cared for, in the first instance, by teachers and support staff.

However if your child is ill, the best place for them is at home. If your child

requires medication during the day we ask that a parent or nominated adult

comes to school to administer this. There is a separate policy in place for

children in EYFS.

The school requires up-to-date contact information so that we may contact

you in case of emergency. Please ensure you tell the school office of any

changes to your contact details.

Basic first aid will be administered when necessary. The majority of our

staff are first aid trained. If a child sustains a minor injury a ‘bump’ note

will be sent home informing the parent of this. We will contact parents or

carers immediately if a child sustains a head injury or is in a condition where

parental presence would be advisable. Should there be a more serious

accident or illness we shall inform the parents and, if necessary, make

arrangements for the child to be taken to hospital.

GENERAL HEALTH CARE If your child has any health problems we are willing to help. Please let us

know of any recurring problem, such as asthma or an allergy. Please advise

Page 10: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014 2015

Page 10

us what treatment to give in an emergency. We will make arrangements in

school to provide for such cases.

MEDICALS The school has regular contact with the School Nurse for various health

checks and medicals throughout the year. Parents will always be informed of

and invited to medical health checks involving their child. Parental consent is

required before children have any health checks.

EXTRA CURRICULAR SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES Many of our staff and members of the local community willingly give extra

hours to pursue activities that will improve and encourage the skills and

interests of the children. We have a programme of planned activities and

aim to give every year group the opportunity to participate in activities

throughout the year.

Activities include football, orienteering, cricket, dance, gymnastics,

recorder, hockey, gardening and netball.

CHILD PROTECTION The Children Act 1989 places a clear responsibility on school to ensure they

work together with other agencies to safeguard and promote the wellbeing

of all children. As a result, if concerns are raised within the school or a

child or parent reports a situation involving possible abuse the school has a

duty to inform the local Social Services Team Manager.

At Leconfield Primary School Mrs Tracey and Miss Allanson are the

members of staff responsible for Child Protection. Any person employed to

work with children in our school is expected to be cleared by a Disclosure

and Barring Service check (DBS).

A copy of the Child Protection Policy is available for inspection.

BEHAVIOUR Our aim is for children to develop self-discipline through reason,

understanding and tolerance, which will carry them through their school

career into adulthood. We emphasise the positive and reward our children

with praise, certificates, stickers and our own school reward scheme of

Page 11: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014 2015

Page 11

‘teddies’.

School rules are concerned with the safety and welfare of children, for the

care and consideration of all people within the school and for the care of

equipment and the fabric of the school.

Occasionally the harmony of school life is disturbed by unacceptable

conduct. In such cases sanctions, such as withdrawal of privileges, are

exercised. Where unreasonable behaviour persists, parents will be invited

to school to discuss the problems and the appropriate course of action to be

taken. For further clarification, please see the school’s Behaviour Policy.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES & INCLUSION POLICY All staff at Leconfield Primary are committed to providing all children with

the same opportunities in school, regardless of sex, race, creed, or culture.

We believe every child has the right to a broad, balanced and relevant

curriculum matched to their ability and needs.

Any behaviour by an adult or child that does not reflect this statement is

unacceptable. All pupils and adults are expected to support this policy.

The key principles underpinning the inclusion policy are providing a carefully

balanced approach that makes educational opportunities accessible to all

children, the emphasis being on the needs of the individual child. From

September 2014 all schools are legally bound to adhere to the

recommendations detailed in the Children and Families Act 2014). The term

‘disability’ refers to any physical or mental impairment, which has a

substantial and long term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out

normal day to day activities. At Leconfield Primary School we endeavour to

provide the opportunities to allow each individual to achieve their potential.

The school will do everything is its power to enable all children to receive an

education regardless of their disability. There are access ramps at all

entrances and purpose built toilet and shower facilities.

Leconfield Primary School is inclusive in its policies, outlook and practices.

Full copies of our Equal Opportunities and Inclusion policies are available for

Page 12: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

inspection.

SECURITY AND SAFETY

School security is taken seriously at Leconfield Primary and we have an

ongoing programme at the school, through the Buildings Committee of the

Leconfield Primary Governing Body, to review and manage security issues.

The school is enclosed and all visitors must report to the school office on

entry to the building. The only access during session hours is via the main

gate.

SMOKING Leconfield Primary School is a No Smoking site in accordance with the East

Riding of Yorkshire No Smoking Policy. Smoking on any part of the site is

not allowed.

COMMUNICATION Effective communication is considered essential at Leconfield Primary and

there are many strategies in place to support this:

‘Open Door’ policy

Weekly headteacher newsletters

Notice boards at the entrances to the school

School Prospectus, reviewed annually

Parent Consultation Evenings

Annual Pupil Report

Headteacher Questionnaires

Subject Workshops

Home Visits for New Starters

We have a text messaging service so that we can keep parents up to date

with essential information and our newsletters are sent home with children

each week. Newsletters are also emailed direct to parents each week and it

is our aim to move away from paper newsletters in an effort to use less

paper. Please ensure the school office has your most recent and up to date

contact information so that we can keep you fully informed.

Page 13: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

Page 13

SUN PROTECTION We recommend that parents use long-lasting sun care products and apply

these before children come to school. We also advise the use of sun caps.

CONSIDERATION OF COMPLAINTS The school aims to work closely with parents and we hope that parents who

have any concerns or anxieties will, in the first instance, raise these with

the Class Teacher or the Headteacher.

We find that nearly all concerns or potential complaints can be resolved

happily through discussion. However, should this not be the case please ask

to see our complaints procedure.

BICYCLES IN SCHOOL No child may ride to school unaccompanied unless they have had Cycle Skills

training and wear a cycling helmet. A child who does not have a certificate

may come to school on their bike if an adult accompanies them on a bike or

they are currently participating in the Cycle Skills Test. Bicycles are left in

the bike sheds at the risk of the owner and no responsibility can be taken

for their security or safety.

The Curriculum

WHAT DO WE DO AT SCHOOL? In KS1 and KS2 subjects are taught in accordance with the requirements of

the National Curriculum. There are three Core Subjects:

Mathematics

English

Science

Foundation Subjects:

Art & Design

Computing

Design & Technology

Geography

History

Languages (Statutory from KS2)

Music

Physical Education

Personal, Social & Health Education and Religious Education are also taught.

Although languages are statutory from KS2, we teach Spanish to all children

including those in EYFS. Children start by learning every day vocabulary for

familiar objects, learn basic phrases and hold simple conversions. As their

skills develop they are able to read and write Spanish words and phrases and

converse at greater length.

The curriculum of the EYFS underpins all future learning by supporting,

fostering, promoting and developing children’s:

• personal, social and emotional well-being;

• positive attitudes and dispositions towards their learning;

• social skills and the ability to manage feelings and behaviour;

• self-confidence and self-awareness;

• communication and language;

• physical development;

• reading and writing;

• mathematics;

• understanding of the world;

• expressive arts and design.

In our school, all children join us at the beginning of the school year in which

they are five. The Foundation Stage is important in its own right, and in

preparing children for later schooling. The Early Learning Goals set out what

is expected of most children by the end of the EYFS.

The curriculum for the EYFS in our school reflects the areas of learning

identified in Development Matters and the Early Learning Goals. The

experiences that our children meet often enable them to develop a number

of competencies, skills and concepts across several areas of learning.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1 the Foundation Subjects, Science and Computing

are delivered through Topics on a two year rolling programme. A similar

thematic approach is used in KS2.

Page 15: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

Page 15

Throughout the school the children are grouped according to age and are in

classes of mixed ability. Due to the numbers of children and staff some

classes may comprise mixed age groupings.

IT PROVISION Leconfield Primary is committed to using IT to improve the standards of

teaching and learning within the school. We are constantly up dating out IT

provision and all classrooms have computers, Interactive Whiteboards and

digital cameras which are used in all areas of the curriculum.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND COLLECTIVE WORSHIP POLICY The school’s religious education follows the guidelines of the East Riding of

Yorkshire’s Agreed Syllabus.

R.E. of a non-denominational nature is available for all pupils. The daily

collective act of worship is broadly Christian in character and may be

organised for separate groups of pupils at any time during the school day.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE and assemblies if

they wish. Please contact the headteacher should you wish to discuss this

further.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS The school is not affiliated with a particular denomination.

SEX EDUCATION

We endorse the Local Education Authority’s recommendations that sex

education should be a continuing aspect of health education through all the

years of formal schooling.

A basic introduction to Sex Education is covered through a range of Science

topics as children progress through the school.

A more formal approach to Sex Education is delivered to Y5 and Y6 during

the autumn term and the material that will be used is available for parents

to see before the scheduled sessions. The sessions are led by the School

Nurse and teachers. Parents have the right to remove their child from

these lessons after consultation with the headteacher.

Page 16: Leconfield Primary School Prospectus 2014

Page 16

THE ARTS AT LECONFIELD The arts have always been an important part of the curriculum at Leconfield.

We offer children the opportunity to learn to play arrange of instruments

including, percussion, recorder, brass and woodwind. In Key Stage 2 every

child learns to play an instrument and read standard notation.

We have extended our curriculum to include dance every day in Years 1 to 6.

As with music we have provided many opportunities for our children to

perform their dances to other classes and in assemblies.

ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION We view the whole concept of traffic education as being part of our

approach to the general personal and social development of the pupils.

Children are be encouraged and taught to take responsibility for their own

safety, and that of others, as they develop. It is through a feeling of

general well-being and high esteem that they are most likely to accept this

responsibility. Wherever possible, traffic education will take place as an

integral part of the planned programme of units of work. Some aspects will,

however, be delivered through discrete traffic education (or road safety)

lessons. There are opportunities to take the Cycle Skills Test and Pedestrian

Skills training is offered annually in Year 4.

The Governing Body

Governors of Leconfield Primary are fully involved in the life of the school.

As well as governing body and sub-committee meetings, they attend

Christmas festivities, school sports days and fund raising meetings and

activities.

The governors are also involved in the academic side of the school, have

taken on board curriculum subjects and are invited to take part with staff in

relevant subject planning meetings. The governors have a key role in the

development of the school improvement plans and the target setting

procedures which both aim to enhance the achievement of all pupils at the

school.
