INFINITIVE• All French verbs start with an infinitive, the base verb
• In English, an infinitive starts with ‘to’, some examples
• To eat
• To drink
• To sing
• To dance
• To study
• To sleep
• To run, etc.
• In French, infinitive is recognizable by its ending
• -er
• -re
• -ir
CONJUGATION• A conjugation is deriving a verb from its infinitive to match the pronoun (or subject) to
make a sentence grammatically correct
• In English, infinitives are conjugated too, according to the tense, example here for present tense:
• To eat: I eat, you eat, he eats, we eat, they eat
• To drink: I drink, you drink, he drinks, we drink, they drink
• To sing: I sing, you sing, he sings, we sing, they sing
• To dance: I dqnce, you dance, he dances, we dance, they dance
• To study: I study, you study, he studies, we study, they study
• To sleep: I sleep, you sleep, he sleeps, we sleep, they sleep
• To run: I run, you run, he runs, we run, they run
SOME FRENCH VERBS• To eat - manger
• To drink - boire
• To sing - chanter
• To dance - danser

• LOOK AT THE ENDING OF EACH WORD…. Each one ends in either –er, -re or -ir
REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS• Most French verbs can either be called ‘regular’ or ‘irregular’
• Regular verbs are called such that because there is a pattern to conjugate it according to the stem of the infinitive; irregular verbs do not have the patterns
• Some regular verbs have exception – it has the pattern of regular verbs, but there are certain exception in spelling, mainly to satisfy the pronunciation of the conjugated verb
THE 2 MOST COMMON VERBS IN FRENCH• The verb ‘to be’ – être
• The verb ‘to have’ – avoir
• Both verbs are irregular verbs

STEMS AND ENDINGS• Every French verb has a stem and ending, which can be seen as a ‘formula’ to create the
conjugation
• The ending of a French verb is always either in –er, or –re or –ir.
• The part NOT in the –er or –re or –ir is the stem
• Examples:
• Regarder (to watch, to look at) regard (stem) –er (ending)
• Finir (to finish) fin (stem) –ir (ending)
• Prendre (to take) prend (stem) –re (ending)
CONJUGATING REGULAR –ER VERBS• Most French verbs are –er verbs
• Regular –er verbs are conjugated this way
Je stem + e Nous stem + ons
Tu stem + es Vous stem + ez
Il, Elle, On stem + e Ils, Elle stem + ent
• Example
Aimer (to love, to like) – stem: aim Détester (to detest, to hate) – stem: détest
J’aime Nous aimons Je déteste Nous détestons
Tu aimes Vous aimez Tu détestes Vous détestez
Il, Elle, On aime Ils, Elles aiment Il, Elle, On déteste Ils, Elles détestent
WHAT DOES CONJUGATION DO?• Basically it gives you the TENSE of the verb (for this class, I will stick to present tense)
• The examples given previously meant:
J’aime: I love, I like, I am loving, I am liking
Tu aimes: You love, You like, You are loving, You are liking
Il, Elle, On aime: He/She/One loves, He/She/One likes, He/She/One is loving,
He/She/One is liking
Nous aimons: We love, We like, We are loving, We are liking
Vous aimez: You love, You like, You are loving, You are liking
Ils, Elles aiment: They love, They like, They are loving, They are liking

• Rashid et toi étudiez les devoirs. – here, Rashid et toi can be replaced by ‘vous’.
• On parle français.
• Les étudiantes dansent bien. - here, les étudiantes can be replaced by ‘elles’.
• Elle cherche le bâtiment, elle est perdue.
• Ils cherchent l’université, ils sont perdus.
• Ils volent les automobiles.
• Je déteste le professeur!
