Graduate Spotlight

Name: Alyna Stober

Lyman Graduation Year: 2015

College Attended: University of Maine

Degrees: Bachelor in Wildlife Ecology

After visiting Lyman Memorial High School this past winter during winter break I realized how much the school and the Lebanon Regional FFA Chapter shaped me to become the person I am today. When I was a high school freshman, I was the shyest thing. But through the friendships, comradery and my SAE (raising Fidelco guide dogs), I can comfortably speak in front of any crowd. I’ve looked back in the yearbooks and remembered all the jokes we played on each other as classmates but also as friends. I’ve met many people who were a part of different FFA chapters and they all say the same thing; FFA changed their life.

While at The University of Maine, I have found that skills I obtained while banding geese with Mr. Picard applied directly to my Wildlife Ecology degree. Even being on the Milk Quality CDE team helped me to join a discussion during my Animal Diseases class about mastitis in milk. My love for the outdoors increased during my four years in FFA and showed me what I truly wanted to do with my life.

FFA also taught me that one set path is not always the best; it’s ok to dabble in a little bit of everything. Now that I’m on the verge of graduating with a B. S. in Wildlife Ecology and a concentration in Wildlife Science and Management, I’ve realized that having one trade is good but having many skills is better. My dream job is work at Disney World as an Animal Behavior Analyst at their Animal Kingdom theme park. I chose this field because it’s what I’m most passionate about; promoting conservation education through the use of animals held in captivity. FFA showed me that everything you study is connected and will build upon each other; someone just has to put the pieces together.

SAE Spotlight:

1. Fill up at least 10 inches of column with actual article text, then print the page and use a ruler to measure how many inches of column your text takes up.

2. Count the number of words in the text.

3. Divide the number of words in the article by the number of inches the text takes up. For example, let’s say you have 456 words in 12 inches of column: 456 ÷ 12 = 38. That’s your magic number for how many words fit in an inch of column in your newsletter. But you’re not finished yet.

4. Measure how many column inches you have available for the article. For example, we’ll say it’s 7 inches.

5. Multiply your magic number by the number of column inches available for the article, which in this case would be: 38 x 7 = 266. This is the maximum length that the article can be.

6. Get the article to a writer, once you get it back and edit it, you can add or remove words here and there to get the article to the right length.

From the Teacher’s Nest:

Mrs. Ferguson Bids Farewell:

As the semester comes to a close and a new one begins, we welcome Mrs. Grogan back. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Lyman covering her classes in her absence and I know that Mrs. Grogan is very happy to be back.

Welcome Back Mrs. Grogan: Hi all, I have just returned from my sabbatical leave of teaching at UConn. It was a wonderful experience and gave me insight to my own teaching philosophy, as well as a fresh look at the next step ahead for many of our students. While there, I was able to connect and network with fellow professors, farm and barn managers, as well as industry professionals. This semester all students, except AG1 grade 9, will start out with Ag speeches and proficiency award applications. Vet tech II's first unit will be the circulatory system, they will learn the parts, functions and preform some simulated and real blood labs. Ag 1 grade 9 will finish up the reaming animal science units of poultry and sheep. I am hoping to get a class field trip in. Advanced floral students will be begin a wedding portfolio for one of our teachers getting married this coming spring. They will be working with her similar to how a florist would starting with an interview to find out her likes, wants, and needs as well as her dislikes. They will design and prepare their own portfolio's based on the interview to meet with her and make final plan and then create the actual pieces. AG 2's first unit will be animal nutrition. Students will be learning the basic nutritional needs, learning to balance rations for protein, using the Pearson square and judging hay samples just to name a few. Basic floral will begin with selecting seeds to plant and grow in the greenhouse that will be for sale in the spring. We will be discussing seed selection, growing, care and maintenance of gardens. We will also be working with a local community garden for spring vegetables as well as the American Legion with planting red geraniums at grave sites of Veterans for Memorial Day. It is great to be back and looking forward to a warm and sunny spring semester.

Mr. Picard, Hunting for an Answer: What is your opinion on hunting on Sundays or opening up a bear hunting season in CT? Those are two of the ideas that students have to work with as they begin to write their speeches. Speeches and proficiency applications are in progress right now. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors have to present for 6-8 minutes. That's about a 2-3 page written speech. Sources must be included. The new semester brings new classes including Forestry and Large Equipment. Forestry students will soon be tapping the trees. We are just waiting for consistent temperatures.

Mrs. Wildes is Counting Sheep: We are pleased to announce that the school’s two Southdown ewes are pregnant and will be lambing within the next two months. The Animal Systems class was there when they were ultra-sounded and we got good news that there should be 3-4 babies born. We are hoping to live stream the births on the school website so contact me for more details. As we start a new year and a new semester Juniors and Seniors are all collectively working on their proficiency awards and their speeches. Freshman are finishing up their animal science units and then will also be moving in to public speaking. We are all looking forward to warmer weather and getting outside!
