Our CP Lab is equipped with innova-tive industrial technologies, so that the knowledge required for digital production can be taught in a practi-cal manner, while simultaneously developing skills through hands-on trial and error.

Learning content:• CP Lab design and structure• Collecting information using

    intelligent sensors• Working with Human-Machine

Interface (HMI)• PLC project engineering• Communication using BUS

technologies• Binary pallet identifi cation • Identifi cation with RFID• Material fl ow: Using RFID

    and NFC• Manufacturing Execution System

(MES): Creating, managing, controlling and visualizing customer orders

Flexible learningCP Lab expands the training possibil-ities where real automation systems might reach their limits. Workstation trolleys allow the individual modules to be easily rearranged to create new work scenarios and introduce new topics. The system can be quickly reconfi gured to suit specifi c training situations.

CompactCP Lab’s compact size makes it con-venient for working in smaller spaces. The pallet transfer system is installed on a trolley allowing the system to be easily rearranged or moved within the lab. These worksta-tions are chained together, forming a production line. They allow the installation of application modules.

Real-world industrial components The system offers training and research on various workstations just like in a real production plant. All applications modules are equipped using real industrial com-ponents. This improves the student’s technical knowledge and increases their employability due to real-life experience.

ExpandableCP Lab is easily expandable accord-ing to customer needs with scalable learning content through inter-changeable application modules and system confi gurations.

What does Cyber-Physical mean?In a cyber-physical system (CPS), digital networks and physical sys-tems are combined to form a single entity. This allows intelligent net-working of people, products, and production equipment. CP Lab is a compact solution that allows you to explore these topics in a realis-tic production line.

Realistic production line The pallet transfer system is the main component of CP Lab and is used to transport work piece carriers to the next working position. Every carrier is equipped with a RFID-tag where the work piece parameters are stored. The pallet transfer system is equipped with a PLC and all neces-sary interfaces in order to accommo-date an application module and to communicate with MES4.

Application modulesThere are nine different application modules used in the CP Lab 400 sys-tems:• Magazine feeder• Measuring• Drilling• Pick-by-Light• Camera inspection• Muscle Press• Turning• Label Printing• Output

    HMI and Control Panel

Industry 4.0 is transforming manu-facturing and changing the way peo-ple, data and machines interact. Innovation creates demand, which is leading to new jobs across a broad range of technologies, including Smart Maintenance, Manufacturing logistics, Mobile robotics and Cyber-security. These changes will require employees to be i4.0 specialists and possess interdisciplinary skills, com-bining classic mechatronics qualifi ca-tions with sound IT knowledge and soft skills.

Festo Didactic, Inc. prepares stu-dents for these in-demand jobs in a complex industrial environment and provides colleges and universities with top-of-the-line equipment and training to develop the advanced manufacturing workforce. Festo Didactic achieves this by putting sim-ulated Smart Factories into college classrooms and universities.

MES4A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) connects the entire manufac-turing process with quality metrics, helping understand how production can be optimized. MES4 is an appli-cation with a new design for Industry 4.0 learning platforms. It has all the same functionality of an industrial MES, but it’s built for the classroom with an easy user interface. It’s full interoperability provides seamless communication between the top fl oor and shop fl oor.

CybersecuritySmart factories facilitate data exchange between people, machines and companies. The protection of this data is one of the most critical factors for companies. NetLab is our modular learning concept that inte-grates the study of IT networks and cybersecurity into CP Lab. It offers a complete and valuable didactic solu-tion designed to make learning as effi cient as possible.

Mixed realityAugmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) enhance the environment with computer-aided information. Technologies with this “mixed” real-ity offer new perspectives on every-day life, and on the learning and working worlds of today and tomor-row. CP Lab’s learning is enhanced by using mixed reality to ease stu-dents into complex topics and envi-ronments.

RFIDIn smart factories, the ability to iden-tify products and make decisions based on this data is a critical factor in order to cope with the increasing number of product variants. CP Lab uses radio-frequency identifi cation (RFID) throughout the pallet transfer system. RFID technology is used to save order data and production sta-tuses on the pallet, thus providing an up-to-the-minute topic for training in automation technology.

Smart MaintenanceThe complexity of a cyber-physical systems creates new opportunities for system maintenance. Mainte-nance specialists must develop new strategies, turning preventive into predictive maintenance. CP Lab pro-vides information about the role of big data in maintenance and illus-trates how to use condition monitor-ing. Consequently, participants com-prehend and can apply smart mainte-nance strategies and measures.

Safety Safety is at an all time importance in Industry. As more Smart Factories are being built, more automation and human machine interaction will occur, which means employee safety is at the forefront. All of Festo’s learning systems are built with safety in mind. Through safety mechanisms, personal protective equipment or proper guidance in curriculum, stu-dents will gain the skills to work in these complex environments.

Preparing students for high-tech careers in Industry 4.0Hands-on experience and troubleshooting real-life obstacles

Energy monitoring The topic of energy-effi ciency is tak-ing on an increasingly important role in industry. The “Green Factory” ulti-mately increases profi tability of the production plant. Our energy moni-toring system is a modular learning systems that prepares students in the fi eld of energy effi ciency. Adding this system to CP Lab allows stu-dents to learn how to monitor energy and make decisions based on data which is a critical foundational skill for Industry 4.0 career readiness.

SimulationToday, simulation represents an important tool in production in order to quickly and cost-effectively ana-lyze new solutions, and processes. CIROS® is the professional software for creating simulation models. By modeling CP Lab, it helps students familiarize themselves with the com-ponents and operation of the system. With a focus on visual learning, the appealing virtual representations motivates students into the full learning process.
