LEARNING STYLE INVENTORY 2

INTRODUCTION

• There are a number of high school dropouts who are now entering the adult high school program at the community college. These students have created a new dimension for the instructor in that they are younger and less mature, and the instructor is accustomed to working with more mature students. These younger students usually practice disruptive behavior and simply do not know how to adjust. They also lack self-discipline, have inconsistent attendance, and do not value class time (Barber, Barber, and Knight, 2001). One student complained that everybody learns differently and the public schools do not make adjustments for those who don’t learn the same way. The adult high school program offers personal attention and a second chance.

• Providing an appropriate learning environment for all of the students requires an understanding as to why they did not previously succeed and how their personalities and learning intelligences differ. Understanding learning styles helps instructors identify and address the temperaments of individuals and the ways they learn best. When an instructor can address a student’s needs, new approaches can be implemented to utilize certain strengths and build up weaknesses.

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL

• The purpose of the Multiple Intelligence Assessment is to determine which ways you learn best and how to use the different intelligences to enhance learning. Using a computer-based intelligence assessment, students can readily see their greatest strengths and weaknesses and focus on making the most of existing abilities and possibly developing some of the others.

LEARNING STYLE INVENTORY 6

After you have determined the ways in which you learn best consider the following:

• What is the most important learned from this activity?

• What is one thing that was discussed that you are still unclear about?

• What are your career interests?

• Is there any difference between your own personal career interests and the careers listed by the intelligence assessment?
