Learning Objectives:
• To understand what is meant by the term ‘concentration of a solution’
What is Concentration?
ConcentrationThe amount of a substance dissolved in a liquid, (always water as far as we are concerned) is called the concentration.
More concentrated solutions have more substance dissolved in them than less concentrated (more dilute solutions).
less concentrated more concentrated
(more dilute) (less dilute)
A soluble solute dissolves in a solvent to form a solution.
Meanings:
Soluble A substance that will dissolve.
Solute The substance that dissolves (e.g. salt).
Solvent The substance in which the substance dissolves (e.g. water).
Solution The mixture of the solute and the solute (e.g. salty water)
The dots represent particles of solute dissolved in water.
Few particles dissolved in the solvent gives a dilute, (not very concentrated) solution.
More particles dissolved in the same volume of solvent gives a more concentrated, less dilute solution.
