Dr. chang is among the luminaries in the retina field. He has developed and pioneered several revolutionary surgical approaches to treat complicated forms of retinal detachment, improving outcomes for patients worldwide. He developed perfluorocarbon liquids as an adjunct in vitreoretinal surgery to improve the outcomes for patients with giant retinal tears and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. His contributions to clinical trials and research on diseases oftheretinaandmaculaareprolific,resultingin110originalarticlesinpeer-reviewed journals. He has received numerous honors throughout his career including the Jackson lecture from the American Journal of Ophthalmology andtheHermanWackerPrizefromClubJulesGonin.TheAmericanAcademyofOphthalmologyhasrecognizedhisservicetotheprofessionwiththe lifetime achievement award and the Secretariat award. consistently named one of america’s best doctors, Dr. chang has had the distinction of being selected national physician of the Year by the castle connolly guides. He served as edward S. Harkness professor and chairman of the DepartmentofOphthalmologyatColumbiafrom1995through2012.
