Assalamu'alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and
Salam Sejahtera.
This conference marks a very special day in the history of the
Universiti Malaya, as this Learning Improvement and Teaching
Enhancement Conference 2020 (LITEC 2020) is the first
ADeC conference organized virtually during the unprecedented
COVID-19 pandemic. We hope all will be inspired by the 29 projects
that will be presented as I am sure we can all appreciate the
principles and values of teaching and learning and reflect upon
them to improve our students' learning experience.
I believe that with this acknowledgement ADeC through the UM-LiTeR grant provided,
will inspire significant enhancements to an already great teaching and learning culture
we have here in UM. The useful research findings and impactful activities we do in our
research can be applied meaningfully by sharing them with our students and integrating
them into our lectures and classes. Wouldn't it be great if our own students are the first
people, we tell the outcome of our research to? We have the abilities to place these
findings within context of the subject matter and the bigger picture of the larger body of
knowledge. Having us lecturers who are active in research should be an advantage for
our students as the inquisitive research nature we have in us should also be instilled in our
teaching and learning practices.I would like to thank the team in ADeC, headed by
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farrah Dina Yusop for organizing this successful and meaningful event. I
sincerely hope that all parties will keep up the spirit we share in this event for the
betterment of our students and our beloved nation as a whole.

Learning Improvement and Teaching
Enhancement Conference (LITEC) 202025th – 27th August 2020
F O R E W O R D
Assalamualaikum and a very good day to all.
Allow me to begin by saying that I am very pleased to be here with
you at this Conference for Learning Improvement and Teaching
Enhancement. Demonstrating grit and determination that the show
must go on, even in the new normal of the COVID-19 pandemic,
ADeC is hosting this year’s LITEC in as a virtual conference. In its
fourth edition, the conference now engages a wider community of
educators - From early childhood, primary and secondary, all the
way to higher education, both public and private.
This year’s LITEC bringing the theme “PERSONALISED LEARNING”, an educational
approach that aims to customize learning for each student's strengths, needs,
skills and interests. In 2019, 28 successful applicants have been granted UM-LITER
to embark their T&L research in Personalised Learning. Hopefully, for these two
days offer a fruitful exchange of ideas, not only on the conference theme of
Personalised Learning, but also on other aspects of educational innovations and
impactful T&L practices. As a member of the university’s top management, I
echo the university’s appreciation of ADeC for its efforts to enhance T&L in UM
and beyond. I will try my best through my office to support ADeC’s research and
innovation efforts in T&L. To conclude my speech, I would like to thank the ADeC
team headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farrah Dina Yusop for their commitment and
efforts. They have made this event a successful and meaningful one. On behalf
of the Management, Universiti Malaya, I sincerely hope that all parties will keep
up the spirit we share at the conference for the betterment of our students and
future generations.

Learning Improvement and Teaching
Enhancement Conference (LITEC) 202025th – 27th August 2020
Assalamualaikum and greetings,
On behalf of ADeC, I would like to express my gratitude to all guests
and participants for joining our very first online conference, Learning
Improvement and Teaching Enhancement Conference 2020 (LITEC
2020). It is an honor for me to welcome all of you to this conference –
a conference dedicated to encourage academicians to reflect and
research on their very own teaching and learning practices. All your
contributions have helped to make this conference a reality.
This conference would not have happened without the enthusiasm of UM Lecturers, as
well as academicians from other academic institutions throughout Malaysia and
abroad. We are proud that LITEC 2020 serves as a platform for academicians to share
their innovative and impactful Teaching and Learning practices. We hope to inspire all
throughout LITEC 2020 by gaining new knowledge and ideas from our invited keynote
speakers and panelists who are experts in their respective fields. Besides that we hope
participants can use this opportunity to expand their online network by sharing their
insights on new and current works, opinions and experiences with others from various
institutions. Again on behalf of ADeC team, we hope that LITEC 2020 become the
catalyst for a striving and healthy teaching and learning culture in our beloved institution.

W E L C O M I N G R E M A R K S
We as educators must equip ourselves with the right skills and teaching principles. This
could be done with evidence-based approach, while at times things have to be a little
bit more impromptu in nature. With the right balance, we could ensure effective
learning, so that the knowledge gained by our students are meaningful and useful.
Thus, I sincerely hope that this v irtual conference could reach as many of us as it could.
I would like to welcome all of you, on behalf of the ADeC team, to our LITEC 2020. Do
enjoy it and may it tickle our minds in questioning our method of delivery and our
teaching principles, in the light of "Personalised Learning".
Assalamualaikum and greetings,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to our fourth Learning
Improvement and Teaching Enhancement Conference 2020
(LITEC2020). We join hands in serving you the best teaching and
learning research on the theme "Personalised Learning". The
Covid-19 pandemic has stressed the very importance of
personalised learning. And as if the theme of the conference
could not be better suited when it was decided last year, before
the pandemic, it provided a very real sense of urgency and first-
hand experience among the lecturers to embrace the real
meaning of ‘personalised learning’.

In our fast-changing world, new ways of working, new ways of doing, and new
ways of living making it necessary for young and old to maintain multiple
profiles of knowledge - wide breadth of knowledge and multiple sets of in-
depth skills and competencies. When there is a will to learn, there is always a
way. The inspired and the dedicated learner will always find a way - a when
(time), a where (space) and a how (platform). The current exponential growth
of online courses, MOOCs and microcredentials is simply a more convenient
way for those inclined to learn. Our role as educators and learners ourselves is
to collaboratively harness technology to co-create learning ecologies that
empower both the inspired and the uninitiated to create personalised
learning paths and experiences for personal and professional growth.
Be sure to join LITEC's Keynote by Prof. Dr. Abd Karim Alias for an insightful look
at the present and future of learning for the sake of learning.

Learning Improvement and Teaching
Enhancement Conference (LITEC) 202025th – 27th August 2020
In the January to April term in 2020, many undergraduate courses at the
Singapore Management University (SMU) were transferred to an online
environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant that many instructors
had to replace the weekly 3-hour face-to-face meetings in classrooms with v ideo-
conferencing sessions and other online instructional methods. To learn from this
experience, SMU surveyed both students and instructors at the end of the term.
The survey results are now helping SMU prepare for another term of partial online
teaching and learning in 2020. At the same time, given that the online classes
stimulated instructors to use technology effectively, the survey is also helping SMU
understand how technology can enhance learning, regardless of the mode of
instruction. In this presentation, Associate Professor Dr. Lieven Demeester will focus
on the use of technology for personalised learning, which is a key area of focus at
SMU. Specifically, he will share the analysis of instructor and student experiences
with respect to the use of technology to deliver varied and readily available
instructional content, support self-regulated learning, and provide feedback to
students.

You’re sitting in front of your laptop, staring into your webcam. You're trying to
teach anywhere between 1 and 1,000 people. They are miles away but
connected to you virtually. You struggle to try capturing their interest. You
don’t know whether they understand what you said. You cannot tell if what
you’re sharing is relevant to them. You are stuck. You are stressed up. You are
on the verge of giving up. What is the solution then? It is Virtual Learning
Facilitation; the ability to run virtual classes that are exciting, informative,
empowering and instructive. It uses the correct Tools, Teaching methods and
design Techniques to create a phenomenal learning environment. Did you
know that you can choose between a Sage, Facilitator, Teacher or Instructor
approach? Or that each approach has its recommended contact time and
audience size, whether you use your webcam or not and even what tone of
voice to use? Or that you can engage learners using gamification by giving
them Analyse, Challenge, Energise or Socialise activities to do during the class?

The fourth industrial revolution has spurred the advancement of emerging
technologies that is changing the educational landscape. With this ground-
breaking technologies, educational affordances are providing opportunities to
educators that were never before present. As teaching and learning
environments become more and more complex as well as becoming more
personalised, educators cannot afford to be static in these ever-dynamic
environments. There is a need to re-think, re-assess, re-design, re-develop, and re-
evaluate how teaching and learning is implemented in these new learning
settings. Furthermore, with these rapid changes, the role of educators have to be
repositioned to suit these personalised environments. The talk will discuss this
concerning issue and provide ideas, views and directions in shifting the roles of
educators towards the future of digital learning.

More so than before, there is a greater diversity in the student body
and in our classes. Students come to us from diverse nationalities,
cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds. Beyond these
demographic markers, we may also find a wide range of learning
styles and abilities, different digital divides and varying personal
circumstances. These individual differences and needs provide an
argument for a personalised approach to teaching and learning that
takes into consideration students’ strengths, skills, needs and interests.
A challenge to this ideal is how to approach personalised learning
within the existing curricular structures and institutional constraints. On
the other hand, a compelling argument for personalised learning is the
diverse circumstances that students - and lecturers too - may find
themselves, given the increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and
ambiguous (VUCA) world that we live in today. We all need grit to
persevere through difficult times, and resilience to bounce back from
adversity. Personalizing learning to the individual student’s needs and
circumstances (and personalizing teaching to the individual lecturer’s
strengths and talents) is one way of nurturing grit and resilience in our
students (and in ourselves as lecturers). As the COVID-19 pandemic
has shown, the formerly safe and structured teaching and learning
(T&L) environment is now disrupted. Students look to lecturers and
teachers for leadership in the class, whether the class remains within
the four walls of a physical classroom, is shifted to the virtual spaces of
online platform, or delivered in a parcel via post. In both normal, and
more so in “new normal” times, educators are not merely conduits of
knowledge for our students, but we are pivotal leaders of their

Learning Improvement and Teaching
Enhancement Conference (LITEC) 202025th – 27th August 2020
The Academic Enhancement and Leadership Development Centre (ADeC) is a Centre of
Responsibility or Pusat Tanggungjawab (PTj) under the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Academic & International), University of Malaya. ADeC’s core responsibility is to design and conduct
professional development programs for UM’s academic staff. ADeC's history began with the
establishment of the University of Malaya Learning Improvement Centre (UMLIC) in 1996 which was
later re-branded as the Academic Development Centre (ADeC) in February 2007.
ADeC's rebranding reflects the centre's then expanded role, from solely providing training on
teaching and learning (T&L) towards producing future renowned and highly competent academic
leaders in T&L, research and superv ision.
In 2017 and 2018 , ADeC's role is expanding even further to include learning and development for
institutional leaders and promotion of well-being among academic staff. Although ADeC’s acronym
remains the same, the centre was renamed as the Academic Enhancement and Leadership
Development Centre (ADeC) in 2016, in anticipation of ADeC's expanded foci. This new name
reflects ADeC's intent to develop and support UM’s academic staff in the domains of: T&L, research
and supervision, as well as leadership and well-being. Accordingly ADeC also manages and
facilitates a range of academic enhancement activities including e-learning and learning spaces
development. ADeC is thus a rather unique centre as it's role extends beyond the traditional function
of a T&L centre.
Instead, ADeC is a centre dedicated to nurturing the holistic development and well-being of UM’s
academic staff as transformational academic and institutional leaders in the Malaysian and global
higher education spheres.
