What Is A Learning Disability?

• Learning disability refers to the processing problems that affect the reception, organization, understanding and retention of verbal or written information.

• It affects the child’s ability to acquire the basic skills of reading, writing or solving mathematical problems.

• Learning disability is an umbrella term which includes various learning disorders such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and visual perceptual/motor deficit.

Types Of Learning Disabilities

Some of the common forms of learning disabilities are-• Dyscalculia- dyscalculia influences the child’s ability to understand numbers and

mathematical facts. It may also result in poor comprehension of math symbols, and memorizing and organizing of numbers.

• Dyslexia- the most common form of learning disorders, dyslexia affects comprehension of words, sentences or phrases, and language processing skills in children.

• Dysgraphia- dysgraphia refers to the numerous writing disabilities including illegible handwriting, inconsistent spacing and improper expression of thoughts.

• Visual perceptual deficit- the disorder influences the ability to comprehend visual messages. The child struggles to distinguish similar letters, numbers, objects, shapes and patterns.

• According to the national institute of health, 15 percent of the US population has some form of learning disability.

• The percentage of students with learning disabilities scoring average or above average grades in math and reading assessment is only 12-26 percent.
