I have a strong desire to be an automotive designer and always wondered how it will be like to design a car professionally. However, I have not had a chance to do it until this year. In the first half of the project, there are a few things I need to get familiar with. The most important thing of all, the audience or target market. A series of interviews and questionnaire will be given to a target audience chosen. Some of the questions may include gender, age, location, interests and also needs. Secondly, I will make sure that I have a basic knowledge of the latest efficient power train technology. These may include how it basically works, how big are the components, advantages and disadvantages. I would also like to get myself familiar with Clay Modeling techniques. This technique is used in car studios to build car prototypes to be presented to public. I am not looking to be an expert in this area as I know it takes some time to master this technique and there will probably a specialized clay modeler working with you in design studios. However, I want to experience the design development process where you move between 2d sketching and 3d clay model. I’m going to make sure that by the time I need to build a clay model I have already known the way to do it. After the research, I will jump in the stage where I have to decide on how to approach this design project. There will be several things that drive this project to a certain direction. These things include ‘Which audience have I decided to work for?’, ‘What sort of vehicle will it be?’, ‘What powers the vehicle?’ and also ‘What kind of innovation will it produce?’. FINAL YEAR LEARNING CONTRACTS

Student Name:   Charles Wijaya Ng

Student Number:  s3139193

Aspirational Grade:   HD

In this year, I decided to take part of the ‘Car of the Future’ studio to challenge myself. I have a

strong desire to be an automotive designer and always wondered how it will be like to design a

car professionally. However, I have not had a chance to do it until this year.

In  the  first half of  the project,  there  are  a  few  things  I need  to  get  familiar with.  The most

important thing of all, the audience or target market. A series of interviews and questionnaire

will  be  given  to  a  target  audience  chosen.  Some  of  the  questions may  include  gender,  age,

location,  interests and also needs. Secondly,  I will make sure that  I have a basic knowledge of

the  latest efficient power train technology. These may  include how  it basically works, how big

are the components, advantages and disadvantages.

I would also like to get myself familiar with Clay Modeling techniques. This technique is used in

car studios to build car prototypes to be presented to public. I am not looking to be an expert in

this  area  as  I  know  it  takes  some  time  to master  this  technique  and  there will  probably  a

specialized clay modeler working with you in design studios. However, I want to experience the

design development process where  you move between 2d  sketching and 3d  clay model.  I’m

going to make sure that by the time I need to build a clay model I have already known the way

to do it.

After  the  research,  I will  jump  in  the  stage where  I have  to decide on how  to approach  this

design project. There will be several things that drive this project to a certain direction. These

things  include ‘Which audience have I decided to work for?’, ‘What sort of vehicle will  it be?’,

‘What powers the vehicle?’ and also ‘What kind of innovation will it produce?’. After figuring all

of  them  out,  I  will  start  designing  process  of  the  vehicle  which  includes  sketching,  digital

renderings, 3d modeling and presentation.

During the development of the design, I will go back to the audience and present the  ideas to

them to see what they think. A decision will be taken based on the collective feedback received.

This way,  I can make  sure  that  the  final design  that  I propose will actually  fit  into  the  target

audience’s lives.

The  thing  that  I would  really  like  to  learn/improve  from  this project  is  the way  I visualize my

ideas.  I  often  hear  people  have  said  that  the  standard  of  the  sketching  ability  of  Industrial

Design students nowadays is deteriorating. With Bernie’s assistance, I would like to improve my

sketching and digital  rendering skills done on  the computer.  It  is always easier  to  learn more

when you have a professional to assist you. I will be constantly practicing sketches and do my

best  in presenting my  ideas.  This  learning however,  should not  interrupt  the design process

itself.

Furthermore, I would also challenge myself in incorporating a brand identity of a car company

into my design. A certain brand will be decided according to the most favorable brand by the

target audience which I will find out once the questionnaires are handed out.

The whole design process from research to the final submission will be documented in blog and

also compiled into a thesis book. This project will end up with an in‐depth and well thought out

solution for the car of the future. This solution will be presented with images and explanation in

a poster format and also a good quality scaled clay model.
