The Yerkes Dodson curve has been the subject of significant debate since its creation in 1908. Whilst it does not appear to hold true for all cognitive tasks, Diamond et. al. (2007) suggest that it holds true for “complex” tasks, ones that involve the pre frontal cortex. Since this is the home executive functioning and higher order thinking, this would include the majority of tasks that teachers set students – and particularly the ones that cause them stress.
