Why Bother?

The major advances in civilization are processes that all but wreck the societies in which they occur.(Alfred North Whitehead)

Page 5: Learning and Leading with Emerging Technology

Why Bother?

Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking of them.(Alfred North Whitehead)

Page 6: Learning and Leading with Emerging Technology

Why Bother?

The art of progress is to preserve order amid change.(Alfred North Whitehead)

Page 7: Learning and Leading with Emerging Technology

Why Bother? If we don't embrace the change and catch up, we will be left behind. Even worse, our students will graduate from our schools without having been taught the values and ethics that must accompany the use of these emerging technologies. We must:

● continue to learn.● model its proper use.● accept we can not possibly know it all.● learn from everyone, including the students.● reveal our bias with openness.

Always Remember!

The Internet is an open ended, decentrailzed, multi-directional, communication tool. It is open, distributed, and susceptible to modification. You say it - they see it. It doesn't go away! It can be fast, can sometimes be modified, always retrievable.

Social Learning Theory

We must understand the use of technology for learning in and outside of our classrooms.

"Computer systems are changing the basic structure of education by providing a ready means for self-directed learning. Disparities in computer skills can create disparities in educational development" (p.434)

Albert Bandura, David Starr Jordan Professor of Social Science in Psychology at Stanford University

Self-Efficacy, 1997

Page 10: Learning and Leading with Emerging Technology

Social Learning TheoryWe must lead in order to guide.

"Technological innovations are embedded in the network structures and power relations of organizations. Adoption of innovations, therefore, can have sociostructural reverberations. Early adopters of beneficial technologies not only increase their productivity but can gain influence in ways that change the structural patterns of organizations." (Bandura, p. 459)
