Preserving

Library of the Year

Digital Public Library of America DPLA release the much-anticipated RightsState-ments.org site - an international cooperative project to streamline and standardize rights statements for online content. The goal of the project is to make it easier for end users to understand how they can share and reuse digital content.

Advocating

Thank you, Library Advocates! Proposed cuts to Library Aid from NYS were avoided and Library Construc-tion Aid increased by 5 million, thanks to your efforts. Increased library aid affects all programs - Library System funding, Coordinated Collection Devel-opment Aid; Conservation/Preservation; Hospital Library Services Program; Medical Information Subsidy Program; Automation funding.

5th Legislative Thank You Breakfast - October 2016 100+ people and all area state legislators.

Join us again October 27, 2017!

Learning

RRLC partnered with all five regional school library systems to offer the annual summer tech camp - Leading with TLC: Technology, Literacy, and Collaboration - held at the Dr. Freddie Thomas High School. This year's conference included two keynote speakers, hands on sessions, a tech petting zoo, and more than 20 individual conference sessions. Over 100 people attended each day of the two-day camp.

Tony Nguyen, NN/LM, U of Maryland presented Geeks Bearing Gifts: Unwrapping New Technology Trends. Attendees said about this class: “This program was excellent and I learned a lot. I consider myself fairly tech savvy but there were technologies mentioned in this presentation that I had never heard of before. I liked the activities where we got to research the topic of our choice and play Kahoot! The instructor was very knowledgeable and personable. He had a very loose teaching style which fit the class perfectly. Please have this class again! I raved so much to my co-workers about it that now they all want to take it for themselves!”

RRLC was pleased to present its first community conversation for library staff - Conversation on Race and Poverty. Rebecca Johnson and Jim Thompson, experienced facilitators, led the discussion among a group of 30 attendees. RRLC would like to thank Rebecca Fuss and the Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library for advising on this event and for connecting us with experienced facilitators.

New York State Historic Newspapers RRLC worked with members to add various newspapers from Wayne and Livingston County to the site. We are always looking for more titles to add and encourage members to contact us with potential newspapers.

Value of RRLC Continuing Education Programs to member libraries: $216,750.

What did users say about our 2017 RRLC Libraries of the Year?

Fairport Public Library – “Although the library is small, it provides a myriad of services to the community. Besides the books, CD's, DVD's, tapes, etc. the library has wonderful meeting rooms for the babies up to seniors. You just feel welcomed there. It's a very nice feeling to know someone there has your best interests at heart. It is MY library, in every sense of the word. My kids view going to the library as a special treat. They can't wait to go and pick out oodles of books. There are so many awesome series for the boys to choose from. They both love to read and Fairport Public Library is a huge reason why.”

Lavery Library, St. John Fisher College – “The library is more than a library. While there are a wealth and variety of resources for faculty, staff, students, and beyond, there is a true sense of community at the library that is difficult to find many other places in today's online society. Staff is incredibly supportive and truly care about students overall well-being, not just academic, asking for and respond-ing to feedback for helpful accommodations, and going beyond what is traditionally offered at a library in terms of items available for check out, creative use of space, and in person connections. They are the most student-centered academic library I have ever encountered!” The Library at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women – “The environment is always one of friendly faces ready to help you in not only finding books but guiding you in personal studies, helping you in writing assignments, and just to offer you some kind words and a welcoming sanctuary to study and relax in peace. It is, in short, a friendly nurturing environment in which to experience hands-on learning. It's the best school library I've ever experienced!”
