Learning Activity: Living Vs. Non-Living An Activity for Contrasting the Differences between Living and Non-Living Things
Learning Goal:
• Students will understand the difference between living and non-living
Objectives:
• Students will successfully identify living and non-living objects • Students will understand that both living and non-living things can be
found in a habitat
Materials:
• Living vs. Non-Living Worksheet
• Images of living objects (from worksheet)
• Images of non-living objects (from worksheet) • Container labeled "Living" • Container labeled "Non-Living"
Introduction:
• Discuss the differences between living and non-living things, such as
living things need air, food, water, they are bout to move and grow
• Discuss that both living and non-living things can be found in a habitat
(i.e. a rock next to a tree in the forest)

• Hold up image of a living or non-living object • Have students decide if it should go in the "Living" or Non-Living"
container • After each decision, discuss why it is living or non-living (Does it grow,
move, or eat, etc.?)
Call to Action: • Draw a picture of a habitat being sure to include both living and non-
living objects
