27 28 Learning About the Excretory System Removing waste products from the body is the major function of the excretory system. It works with both the respiratory and circulatory system to remove these wastes. There are four major organs in the excretory system. These organs are the lungs, liver, kidneys and skin. You have learned that the lungs excrete carbon dioxide waste. The lungs also excrete small amounts of heat and water. The skin excretes most of the body’s waste heat. In addition, the skin removes some water and salts. These wastes are excreted by the skin as sweat. This sweat helps your body cool off. The liver filters the blood and changes harmful materials, such as alcohol, to harmless materials. The kidneys excrete a liquid waste called urine. Materials: colored pencils What To Do: 1. Label 1 SKIN and outline it in brown. 2. Label 2 lungs and color them pink. 3. Label 3 liver and color it purple. 4. Label 4 kidneys and color them yellow. Who Took the Insulin? The food you eat supplies glucose (type of sugar) to the cells for energy. If you have the disease called diabetes then the glucose does not go into the cells because an organ called the pancreas is not producing insulin. The glucose stays in the blood where it is filtered by the kidneys and placed in the urine to be excreted. If the pancreas is not working correctly 1 2 3 4

Learning About the Excretory SystemRemoving waste products from the body is the major

function of the excretory system.

Materials: colored pencilsWhat To Do:1. Label 1 SKIN and outline it in brown.2. Label 2 lungs and color them pink.3. Label 3 liver and color it purple.4. Label 4 kidneys and color them yellow.

Who Took the Insulin? The food you eat supplies glucose (type of sugar) to

the cells for energy. If you have the disease called diabetes then the glucose does not go into the cells because an organ called the pancreas is not producing insulin. The glucose stays in the blood where it is filtered by the kidneys and placed in the urine to be excreted. If the pancreas is not working correctly diabetics must take injections of insulin that they get from their doctor. Without insulin the body cannot maintain its balance.

Last night there was a robbery at the Springfield Drug Store. Ten bottles of insulin were taken. The Springfield Police Department has eight likely suspects and they believe the perpetrator is probably diabetic. All of the suspects have given a urine sample.

Materials: numbered urine samples in test tubes, universal indicator, suspect sheetWhat To Do:1. Look at the suspect sheet and place the name of each suspect in the chart.2. Each table is testing one suspect’s urine.3. Place 5 drops of universal indicator in the test tube.4. Swirl the test tube around so the liquids mix well.5. Observe the color of the urine. Record.6. Share your findings with the class.
