Power Query: Overview, Data Shaping, Manipulation

• Imports data from both conventional and novel data sources

• Brings the data into Excel worksheets and/or the Excel Data Model

• Web page data import that is far superior to Excel’s built-in facility

• Adds a lot of value to Power Pivot and Power View. – Provides access to additional data sources

• Uses a sophisticated underlying query language which users can completely ignore, or use directly (or just observe)

• Available for Excel 2010 or 2013. Data Model support only in 2013.

• Product is in preview.

• Configure data types

• Rename and remove columns

• Insert custom columns

• Split columns (i.e. convert delimited text to columns)

• Sort, Group

• Unpivot columns

• Filter data

• Replace values

• Keep top n rows, or specific range of rows

• Remove duplicates

Page 54: Learn Power BI with Power Pivot, Power Query, Power View, Power Map and Q&A

Slide | 54

Getting External Data Into Excel

• Fetch data from disparate sources

– Relational databases and cubes

– Text files and web pages

• Filter and shape

– Select the data you want

– Split and reformat columns

• Refreshable queries

– Not just a one time copy & paste action

Slide | 56

Why Power Query?

Enables self-service data discovery, query, transformation and mashup experiences in Excel

Discovery and connectivity to a wide range of data sources, including publicly available data of all sizes & shapes.

Highly interactive and intuitive experience for rapidly and iteratively building queries over any data source, any size.

Consistency of experience, and parity of query capabilities over all data sources.

Joins across different data sources; ability to create custom views over data that can then be shared with team/department.

Power Pivot's history started with two internal Microsoft papers by Amir Netz in 2006, who was then an Architect in the SQL Server Analysis Team. The first paper introduced the concept of a BI “sandbox,” which was conceived as a product that would allow BI applications to be created in a much easier way—in a controlled environment that would include relational databases, multidimensional databases, and a reporting tool. While the paper helped to shape PowerPivot from concept to product, many of the original ideas changed. For example, in the original paper, Microsoft Access was the client application, not Excel, but nevertheless, many of Netz’s ideas formed the essence of PowerPivot.

What is DAX?

• DAX is the new calculation language for PowerPivot

• MDX is still the query language

• It is a multidimensional calculation language like MDX, but the design goals were:

• Make it easy to do common calculations (easier than MDX)

• Make it easy to use for Excel power users, hence the Excel-based syntax

• DAX expressions are limited to a single (though often very long) line of code

Page 92: Learn Power BI with Power Pivot, Power Query, Power View, Power Map and Q&A

Slide | 92

Why learn DAX?

• Your power users will be learning it, and you’ll need to understand what’s going on in their PowerPivot models

• It’s very likely that it will be used in future versions of SSAS – possibly as an alternative to MDX for some calculations

• We love both DAX and MDX, and MDX is not going away. The challenge for us is to bring them together. We have some promising directions. That said – I think you’ll see DAX evolving in new important directions that MDX will never cover, and a large and growing portion of the calc work will be done in DAX. So my advice stands: all you guys need to become DAX gurus ASAP. Amir Netz, Microsoft

Row Context and Filter Context

• Row context refers to the current row where a calculation is taking place

• There is no row context without a DAX aggregation function

• Filter context refers to the currently selected item on each column on each table

• Very similar to the CurrentMember function in MDX, but handles multiselect elegantly

• Filter context follows the one-to-many relationships between tables

• Both row and filter context must be taken into account when writing expressions for calculated measures

Calculate()

• The Calculate() function is the key to all advanced DAX calculation functionality

• Signature: Calculate(Expression, SetFilter1, SetFilter2,...)

• It allows any expression to be evaluated in a specific filter context

• It works as follows: • Modifies the current filter context according to the SetFilter

arguments you pass in

• Shifts the row context onto the filter context

• Evaluates your expression in the new filter context

• Oldest self serve BI add-ins available for Excel

• Now integral part of Excel

• Allows data modeling and interactive visualization in Excel

• Data size only limited by the amount of RAM available on your machine

2010 2013

Cannot connect Power View directly to SP list data

Can export list to PowerPivot

Must have latest version of PowerPivot

Users must have at least Read permissions – View does not work

Note that read-only user can edit a report – just cannot save it

Power View is in Excel

Appears as a worksheet

No SQL

No SharePoint

SharePoint uses Excel Services to present Power View

Introducing Power Map

• Power Map Preview for Excel 2013 allows you to plot geographic and temporal data visually, analyze that data in 3D, and create interactive tours to share with others.

• This preview gives you an early look into the new features that provide 3D data visualization for Excel and a powerful method for people to look at information in new ways, enabling discoveries in data that might never be seen in traditional 2D tables and charts.

• We can download and install Power Map from

http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/excel/redir/XT104048049.aspx

What we can do with Power Map

• Map Data: plot more than a million rows of data in 3-D, visually on Bing maps from an Excel worksheet table or the Data Model in Excel.

• Discover Insights: gain new understandings by seeing your data in geographic space and seeing time-stamped data change over time.

• Share Stories: capture screenshots and build cinematic, guided video tours that can be shared broadly, engaging audiences like never before. Tours can be exported to video and shared that way as well.

• Sales performance • Distribution of crime data • Disease control • Weather patterns • Seasonality analysis • Voting trends • Real estate assessment
