Princess gets sick tooalmost 180 people have been

taken ill with a reported outbreak of another gastrointestinal sickness aboard a Princess Cruises ship operating out of Houston.

The Caribbean Princess was on a seven-day cruise to its namesake region but was cut by one day, although a spokesperson for the cited the cut due to thick fog.

Officials from the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention met the vessel on its return and have carried out an investigation.

Princess Cruises said the ship will undergo a full sanitisation course before its next departure.

All passengers aboard the shortened voyage will receive a 20% discount on their next Princess Cruises booking as well as an allowance to cover one day of meals and ancillary expenses.

It is the second ship to report cases of gastro after last week’s outbreak on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas, which affected more than 600 people.

Fourth Ponant namedFrench luxury line Compagnie

du Ponant has chosen Le Lyrial as the name for its fourth Boreal class vessel, which will take to the seas in just over a year.

First announced mid last year (CW 18 Jul), Le Lyrial will offer larger, albeit fewer, staterooms to its sister vessels, each measuring up to 600 square feet in size as part of a redesigned Deck 6.

Like its sister vessels, Ponant’s new liner will display shades of blue as its colour scheme inspired by the constellation Lyra.

around the globe will converge on Sydney this week to take part in the local cruise sector’s biggest ever event.

The inaugural Cruise3Sixty Australasia conference and exhibition - taking place this Fri 07 Feb at Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel - has attracted interest from around the world, with the event set to be opened by Cruise Lines International Association president, Christine Duffy.

Other international figures present will include Aqua Expeditions ceo Francesco Galli Zugaro, Hurtigruten Cruises md Kathryn Beadle and Cruise Copenhagen director Bo Larsen.

In addition, local talent including Carnival Australia ceo Ann Sherry, Royal Caribbean md Gavin Smith, APT founder Geoff McGeary and Compagnie du Ponant chair Sarina Bratton will be in attendance.

Presentations will also be made from Sydney Ports Corporation, Uniworld, Globus, Travel the World, Google, Princess, P&O and Cunard, along with Google Plus travel agents including OzCruising and Cleancruising.com.au.

The sell-out event will see more than 350 delegates attend the conference which also features a trade show where agents will be updated on the latest cruise industry product developments.

It’s a huge weekend for CLIA,

which will also host its annual awards this coming Sat night, honouring top cruise agents from Australia and New Zealand.

Tragedy on NCL shipone child has reportedly died

onboard Norwegian Breakaway this morning, with a second child airlifted to hospital.

NCL states on its Facebook page: “Our emergency medical team was called and notified that two small children were rescued from the adult pool, but were unresponsive on the pool deck.

The team responded immediately and quickly administered CPR to both children.

The older child was then airlifted by the U.S. Coastguard to the closest medical facility, accompanied by his grandmother and a nurse from the ship.

“Devastatingly, after many resuscitation attempts, the younger child passed away on board,” the post from Norwegian Cruise Line reads.

Ponant’s local sales may have suffered a slow start - and turned off one potential customer from Queensland.

John Gercken of Northside Business Travel told TD Cruise Update that up until late last week, the company’s Australian 1300 number “goes through to the residential home of some poor pensioner in Queensland who has never heard of them”.

Ponant’s Australian team has since rectified the problem.

Return to BaltimorecarnIval Cruise Lines is set to

return to operate from Baltimore, Maryland from early next year after reaching an agreement with officials on environmental policy.

The line decided mid-last year to deploy Carnival Pride to Tampa when authorities in Baltimore imposed strict new rules on emissions which Carnival said would reduce its profit margins.

Cruises will resume seven-night sailings after the parties reached a compromise which will see Pride fitted with exhaust scrubbers to reduce pollution.

CCL cracks sales recordcarnIval Cruise Lines hit a

one-month reservations record in Jan, taking net bookings for more than 565,000 pax in Jan – a 17% increase year-on-year.

Bookings for the month reached unprecedented levels across the 24-ship fleet, including cruises departing from Australia.

“Similar to our US counterparts, Carnival Cruise Lines in Australia had a very strong start to the year – we set a one-day, one-week and one-month sales record in January 2014,” Jennifer Vandekreeke, vp Australia, CCL, told TD Cruise Update.

“The strong demand has been driven by ongoing agent support, the excitement around the arrival of Carnival Legend in Sep and the new ‘Write Your Own High Seas Adventure’ campaign.”

Carnival Legend is currently in dry dock to be fitted with Green Thunder and the waterpark, Red Frog Pub and Bonsai Sushi.

Carnival president & ceo Gerry Cahill attributed the global record booking activity to continued product enhancements, attractive promotions, strong support from travel agent partners, and increasing consumer recognition of Carnival’s “truly exceptional vacation value”.

“We are seeing heavy sales growth in all channels, particularly via our travel agent partners,” he said.

Traffic to the line’s US and Australian websites also hit an all-time high for Jan with 13m visits.
