Transcript of Leap Manifesto (draft2)

Our manifesto proposes a return to the true roots of democracy. We aim to change modern government from its corrupt ways to how a democracy was originally intended to be; to make any significant change though, we need one leap of faith.

Democracy is something we are claimed to live in. But when was the last time you actually saw your opinions count for something. Why can’t we live in a society when we all have our time, no voice going unheard. Politicians and the elite making decisions about the lives of people they couldn’t even pretend to relate to let alone understand.

Let’s EmbraceAthenian Politics

The founding principles of Athenian democracy were based upon the idea that every member of a community regardless of social status, wealth or age deserved a say in the political policies that they were governed by. To recreate this, one person clear

of criminal records from every town is randomly selected or chosen on merit of achievement every month, to join other such people and run the country in a debating fashion. This will get a grounded and equal representation of the country and its peoples’ opinions.

So~the Questionis,What’s

LEAP?

It will be an unpaid position, instead seen as being a privilege to take part. However, travel expenses will be paid and they will still receive pay from their current job. Therefore tax can be lowered and focused towards benefiting everyone rather than a select few. Running an assembly like this would obviously not go without regulation and much needed government workers. The Athenians had a council of 500 (50 each from the surrounding tribes) to conduct all the hands on work for the proceedings. A similar pool of officials would be needed to keep this proposed system running. Recruiting government officials would not be done by interview and hierarchal climbing but, like Athenian Democracy, would be chosen by lottery and achievement eliminating the influence of wealth or social rank in forming the structure of government. These mandatory positions would be fully paid but non-permanent.

Inside the democracy there are no prejudices and everyone is viewed equal; all members are British no matter what colour their skin or how tall they stand. While respected, no religious beliefs are to come into decisions made by the governing body either. This allows science and technology to lead the way in economical and evolutionary growth; bringing with them a better way of life, d iscover ing/developing sustainable resources for a brighter, better3 future to come; a future you will have built.

Build Your OwnFuture

Understanding a drawback noted and experienced with original Athenian Democracy, are implications of the media and their sway on the chosen representatives. We cannot leap forward without first looking back. To combat this, the media would be used in favour to build a sense of ‘personal honour’ by which people adopt higher respect for others, themselves and their actions. This would not limit ‘the truth’ of media or insert censorship. Instead it uses the power of its persuasion to establish a greater social community.
