Six Sigma, Lean IT and Theory of Constraints

Lean IT and Lean Six Sigma both represent tool sets for process improvement. Six Sigma, focus on reducing variation and achieving uniform process results in less waste, less throughput time and less inventory. Lean IT, focus on waste and flow time results in less variation, uniform output and less inventory. TOC, focus on constraints and increased throughput results in less inventory and a different accounting system.

Application development and maintenance is a prime candidate for lean methods not only because it involves a great many processes with the potential to be optimized but also because large differences in productivity among organizations suggest that some are far less efficient than others. Applying the principles of lean to ADM can increase productivity by 20 to 40 percent, while improving the quality and speed of execution.

The Lean Approach is the basis of Agile Agile tells you how to optimize the end to end process that creates value for your customers – from the initial idea to collecting cash. Lean principles focus on flow more than anything else: bottlenecks in the process must be removed and wasteful activities need to be identified and avoided.

Lean IT and DevOps DevOps focuses on Improving the Collaboration between

developers and operations. The development teams and the operation teams need to find ways to reduce waste and streamline processes. This is where Lean IT comes in. Lean IT is an extension of Lean Principles, applied in an IT environment. The approach is a way of thinking and acting, focusing heavily on organizational culture. DevOps can use the benefits of Lean methodologies into operations by reducing the barriers to delivering more value to the customer (Lean) and aligning with the business. This results in a better running development team, smoother operations, and ultimately happier customers.
