ABOUT ERICH

-A huge fan of the Milwaukee Brewers growing up, Uelmen is the second Chicago Cubs’ draftee out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in three years, joining current teammate Casey Bloomquist, who was picked in the 17th round of the 2015 draft.

-Born and raised in Las Vegas, Uelmen was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 draft. Thus, he is the highest pick from the Southern Nevada region since College of Southern Nevada right-hander Phil Bickford went to the San Francisco Giants at No. 18 overall in 2015.

-Uelmen ended his Cal Poly San Luis Obispo career with a complete-game shutout of UC Riverside. He finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts to cap a 4-8 campaign with a 2.93 ERA. Uelmen’s 100 strikeouts in 98.1 innings on the season ranked second in the Big West Conference.

-An industrial technology major in college, Uelmen graduated from Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas with a 4.0 grade-point average.

2018 SEASON

-Uelmen made just seven pitchers in his July 6 start at Buies Creek before having to depart from the game following a 52-minute rain delay.

-The right-hander was promoted to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend on June 23. The Las Vegas native did not allow a run in five of his last seven outings dating back to May 8. During that streak, he went 4-2 with a 1.09 ERA (41.1 IP, 32 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 BB, 43 K).

-At the time of his promotion from South Bend, Uelmen ranked second in the Midwest League in FIP (2.47) behind the circuit’s highest ground ball rate (66.2 percent). No pitcher in the league registered a lower fly ball rate than Uelmen’s 20.8 percent, with the right-hander’s 13.0 percent line drive rate ranking as the third-lowest. The Las Vegas native posted the circuit’s third-highest swinging strike rate (15.4 percent) and 10th-best strikeout rate (25.0 percent) to help him pitch through some bad luck (.344 BABIP).

-With South Bend, Uelmen limited right-handed hitters to a .269 average and .628 OPS over 139 plate appearances. However, he was even better against left-handed batters, holding them to a .222 average and .587 OPS in 92 plate appearances.

2017 SEASON-Following 98.1 innings with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the Cubs opted to limit Uelmen’s innings with Short Season Class A Eugene. The right-hander made seven relief appearances, maxing out at three innings and 51 pitches.

ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES-Uelmen opened his sophomore season as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Sunday starter and moved into the Saturday slot during Big West play. He compiled a 5-3 record and 3.68 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 93 innings. During that sophomore campaign, Uelmen recorded complete-game victories over UCLA and Sacramento State.

-As a freshman in 2015, Uelmen appearanced in 16 games, making one start for the Mustangs. He went 0-1 with a 7.08 ERA and one save.

-A pitcher and outfield in high school, Uelmen helped Faith Lutheran to a 29-5 record, Sunset League title and the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Division I-A championship in 2014. On the mound, he went 9-1 with a 1.19 ERA, striking out 89 batters in 58.2 innings. He also batted .510 with 17 doubles, six triples, three home runs and 47 RBIs, earning First Team All-State honors as a utility player.

-Uelmen also helped Faith Luthern to the Nevada state Division I-A title as a junior in high school, registering a 4-3 record and 2.22 ERA on the mound while hitting .421 with 13 doubles, two triples and 23 RBIs at the plate.

-One of four children, Uelmen has one brother, Leo, and two sisters, Ashley and Allison.
