Meet Assistant Director Hodge!Where are you from/have lived/gone to college?
I have lived almost my entire life in Tennessee prior to coming out to Arizona. I grew up in a
small farming county outside of Knoxville, TN, and attended the University of Tennessee
(Knoxville) and East Tennessee State University for my undergraduate. After college, I spent
six years teaching high school and middle school band in Kingsport, TN, as well as working as
a music director for a local theater company, freelancing as a pianist, and writing marching
band shows for local bands. In 2012 I began my masters degree at the University of
Memphis in Wind Conducting, where I got to work with the Mighty Sound of the South
marching bands, conduct the wind ensemble, symphonic band, and university band, and
direct the basketball pep bands. I just finished my degree in May, and was extremely
fortunate to get the opportunity to come to Arizona, where Im beyond excited to be here!
Some Hobbies/Interests:
My primary interest (outside of music) is probably my family my wife Jessica and my 4 year
old daughter Quinn. I also enjoy travelling, cooking, theater, college sports, gaming (mostly
pen-and-paper RPGs), and weightlifting.
Why did you choose your main instrument?
Originally, I wanted to be a drummer, and for my entire first year played percussion. My HS
director, however, needed low brass, so I was moved to euphonium in 6th grade. A year or
two later, I started studying piano, and took both very seriously throughout school. The
combination has allowed me a lot of opportunities to perform in numerous great ensembles on
different instruments marching tuba, playing trombone in jazz bands (and piano), and
euphonium in wind ensembles across Tennessee.
Why POA?
Because its the Pride of Arizona! To be able to work with a band of this caliber is anamazing opportunity which still feels unreal. Add to the band program the fact that UA is
one of the top universities in the country and that UA football and basketball are both huge
and successful programs its a perfect mix for a dream job (to me).
Most Embarrassing Band Moment:
Because I was a euphoniumist of high caliber (i.e. I could read the parts and hold the horn),
I was brought into my countys high school band program in 7th grade, at the age of 11.
While I may have had the physical skills to participate in marching band, I didnt quite have
the maturity to understand the responsibilities such as always wearing a pair of suspenders
(in the days before bibbers). As such, during our last contest, right after our opening
number, my marching pants hit the ground. Underneath, I was wearing a pair of bright purple
pajama pants. Not knowing what to do, I marched for the next three songs with my pants
around my ankles, just trying to keep in formation. But at least I wasnt out of step!
Questions for POA: Favorite POA Show:
Muse, 2010. Brilliantly written and executed, and Muse is a great band anyways.

Show Suggestions:
I could see a lot of different shows, but I think my favorite concepts are a 3rd wave ska
show (Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Streetlight Manifesto, No
Doubt, Goldfinger, Save Ferris, Sublime lots of options!), an EDM show (Deadmau5, Skrillix,
etc.), or something in the alternative metal scene Avenged Sevenfold, Misfits, All That
Remains, Bullet for My Valentine, etc. With being the worlds first alternative rock band,
theres a lot of ways you can go and still be really different year to year.
What dessert would you be and why?
I would have to be a banana split its a dessert which is at the same time very basic but
very diverse. Theres a lot of different options with a banana split, but it is essentially a
relatively simple dish. While I have a lot of interests and like always having things going on,
at heart Im a very simple person I love good food, good drinks, good music, and simple
things (like cruising in my convertible on a warm summer night, or finding JUST the right
position to relax in while you read a great book).
Thanks a bunch, and Im excited beyond words to work with the POA!!!

Missouri State University
Springfield, MO

Conway, AR
Some Hobbies/Interests:
XBOX, percussion, books, grilling/cooking
Why did you choose your main instrument?
Percussion has a lot of instruments to learn, so things are always fresh and exciting.
Why POA?
I have a decent amount of teaching experience in collegiate marching band. This is an
amazing group and it seemed like a natural fit.
Most Embarrassing Band Moment:Puking mid-show in my second year of band at MSU. Got on the snare drum player next to

Favorite POA Show:
Mumford and Sons or Yellowcard
Show Suggestions:
Don't fight the groove! Feet come first, once those are good, music will follow (assuming you
keep practicing).
What dessert would you be and why?
Vanilla ice cream. I initially might seem cold and boring, but after awhile you'll realize that I'm
cool and I like things to be simple.
