F o u n d F r e n c h R e s t a u r a n tr e s t a u r a n t d e s i g nThe concept of this design was inspired by the abandoned theater scene in August Rush when the main character reveals that his deepest desire is to be found. Centered on the neglected nature of the fi lm’s theater and the concept of ‘found, ’ the restaurant’s design includes discarded windows acting as partit ions between dining booths. Similarly, the aged look of the f looring and unique l ight fixtures also suggest a feeling of neglect. As an unexpected addition to the otherwise abandoned-looking finishes, the furniture selected from Christopher Guy is inspired by the protagonist’s abil ity to create musical masterpieces in such a broken place.

E r d e m S t o r er e t a i l d e s i g nThe feminine and sophisticated si lhouettes and texti les known to the Erdem brand inspired the design of its new Midtown East store. Through several of their past col lections, large f loral prints harmonized the texti les. This common thread translated into carpet and furniture selection throughout the space. Highl ighting the collection’s pieces also became an important factor in the space’s layout, as evidenced by the custom clothing display racks that l iteral ly frame collections, groupings, and individual pieces. The concept of framed displays also al lowed for a feature wall that highl ights Erdem patterns and texti les, which can easi ly adjust with each season.

T h e G a p , I n c O f f i c eo f f i c e d e s i g nThe Gap, Inc. is recognized for its classic and timeless approach to clothing. Thus, this clear style is carried through into the material and furniture selection of this executive office. Like their classic blue jeans and white button-up shirts, the l ight-stained walnut wood of the desk, table and cei l ing, along with the muted, monochromatic color scheme are a masculine, but authentic approach to the Gap, Inc. brand. The selected furniture from HBF and the l inear nature of the Interface carpet suggest straight l ines across the space, an element that is mirrored by the geometric nature of Gap, Inc’s logo. The Eames Molded Plywood Dining Chairs as side chairs tie together the concepts of the space with their recognizable form and classic material .

T r a n s i t i o n a l K i t c h e nk i t c h e n d e s i g nSeurat’s famous 19th century Impressionist painting was the piece chosen to best ref lect the historicity of this federal style row house. Accordingly, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is featured as the inspiration behind the kitchen’s design, taking both a central place as an art piece in the dining room and inf luencing the selection of finishes, furniture, and colors through the depth and story depicted in the painting. The l ight fixtures of the space reiterate the shape of the painting’s umbrellas. The ref lections on the water are echoed in the glazed upper cabinets and the transparent acrylic chairs. The pointi l l ism found in both this painting and other Impressionist works is replicated in the design of the mosaic backsplash. In addition, the inclusion of history was an important goal throughout the project, inf luencing the selection of the reclaimed wood table and the penny-ti led kitchen f loor, since both choices signify age and history.

L u x u r y C o n d oR e s i d e n t i a l D e s i g nFor their Chicago apartment, this project’s cl ients requested a mid-century modern design style and future wheelchair accessibi l ity to accommodate expected effects of a debil itating condition. An open f loorplan makes travel around the space easy and complements the modern design. Therefore, the design al located sufficient space for clearances, doorways, and turning radii . The recessed rug, kitchen counter overhang, and cabinetry on l ifts continue to ensure that even the detai ls are suitable for accessible l iving without compromising appearance both now and in the future.

M u l t i - u s e S e a tf u r n i t u r e d e s i g nWithin the luxury condominium design project, the cl ients requested a custom furniture piece that fit with the mid-century modern style. Keeping in mind that the cl ient was diagnosed with a severe condition and future wheelchair placement, the piece was made simple, versati le, and mobile. This seat was designed for the main l iving room of the condo where it can function as both a seat, when placed across from the other seating, and function as a coffee table, when placed in front of either sofa with either the detachable cushion stored or the box f l ipped to provide a f lat surface on top and cushion storage below. This versati l ity is compatible with the cl ient’s needs and accounts for their mobil ity constraints by keeping the space open.

H e m p P e n d a n tl i g h t f i x t u r e d e s i g nDesigned as an accent piece for a dining area with several large windows, the goal of this l ight fixture design was to complement the natural l ight coming in. Light passes easi ly through the wrapped hemp string and creates shadows on the wall . The combination of the unique material and unexpected shape make this fixture a focal point of any space.

The Herman Miller Action Office systems furniture was selected out of UNI surplus furniture, meaning limited pieces were available for reconfiguration into the space. In addition, two new files would be purchased and would need to be placed, along with an existing mini fridge and microwave.
