Leaf Structure• The Leaf Blade• The blade is the entire leaf unit.
Sometimes this is made up of several smaller leaflets.

Leaf Margin
• The margin is the term used to describe the edge of the leaf.
![Page 5: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Leaf Base
• Base is the name given to the part of the blade that is closest to the stem.
![Page 6: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Leaf Apex
• The Apex is the tip of the leaf.

Petiole
• The Petiole is the thin stalk that connects the leaf blade to the stem
![Page 8: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Stipule
• Stipules are tiny leaf-like structures that may or may not be present at the base of the petiole.
![Page 9: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Petiolate and Sessile
• Leaves which have petioles are called Petiolate
• If a leaf has no petiole it is called Sessile.

Seven Main Leaf Structures

Leaf Blade
• The main part of a leaf is the blade.
• Nine major shapes– Linear– Lanceolate– Oblong– Elliptic– Ovate Cordate– Reniform– Spatulate– Orbicular
![Page 12: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Linear
• Narrow, with parallel or nearly parallel side
![Page 13: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Lanceolatelance shaped, longer than broad and tapering to a point at the tip
![Page 14: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Oblong
• Much longer than wide, with nearly parallel sides
![Page 15: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Elliptic
• Shaped like an ellipse, wider at the center and tapering to equal tips
![Page 16: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Ovulate
• egg-shaped, broader at the base than the tip
![Page 17: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Cordate
• Heart shaped, either the leaf shape or base
![Page 18: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Reniform
• Kidney shaped
![Page 19: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Spatulate
• In the shape of a spatula or spoon
![Page 20: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Orbicular
• Round

Leaf Groupings
• How leaves are grouped on stem– Simple– Compound
![Page 22: Leaf Identification to identify broad and narrow shaped leaves](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081507/5a4d1add7f8b9ab059975923/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

Leaf Margins
• The shape of the edge or margin of a leaf is another way it can be identified. Three kinds of margins are Entire, Toothed, and Lobed.
