Maintenance Of Leaf Chains For FORKLIFTS Trucks

1. LUBRICATION:

Leaf Chains when used for FORKLIFT trucks require to be lubricated regularly to reduce wear between pins and side plates. Dependant on the size of the chain the recommended oil is in accordance with the following; Chain Pitch:

a. 12.7mm to 15.875mm SAE 20 b. 19.05mm to 31.75mm SAE 30 c. 38.1mm and above SAE 40

In NO CIRCUMSTANCES should grease be used to lubricate leaf chains as foreign particles adhere to the grease and penetration between pin and side plate cannot be guaranteed.

Lubrication should be applied to the chain to ensure that it penetrates between the pin and side plate, generally by use of a brush or similar method. Excess oil should be carefully wiped off and NOT BE REMOVED BY THE USE OF SOLVENTS OR ANY OTHER SOLUTION.

2. MAINTENANCE:

As all chains are subjected to wear and elongation regular checks are required to eliminate failure by occurrence of any of the following.

A. Pin Rotation: This can be checked by noting the position of the riveting which should be parallel with the top and bottom of the side plate. B. Cracks: Check link side plates for any cracks. These are generally a sign of chain fatigue C. Interference & or Misalignment: This can sometimes be observed when some parts of the chain become worn or polished. Also check the guides/sheaves for chain seat /alignment, clearance and wear.

D. Elongation: Measure the chain under load or tension for elongation. When the chain is 3% or more of its original length it must be replaced. Measurement should be taken in the area of where the chain articulates most frequently over the sheaves. This check should be carried out at least every six (6) months of operation and more frequently for high usage machines.

Disclaimer: The above recommendations are for the care and maintenance of the chains manufactured by Tsubakimoto Chain Co only. For other chain checks and maintenance requirements please check with the manufacturer of the equipment for their recommendations and requirements.
