New faculty profiles: Felicia Magpantay

Queen’s has committed to hiring 200 new faculty members over the next five years

Felicia Magpantay is one of 41new faculty members hired in2017-18 as part of Principal DanielWoolf’s faculty renewal plans. Theplan will see 200 new facultymembers hired over the next fiveyears, which will mean approxi-mately 10 net new hires per year.

This profile is the first in a se-ries which will highlight thesenew faculty members, like Dr.Magpantay, who have recentlyjoined the Queen’s community.She sat down with the Gazette totalk about her experience so farand her journey to Queen’s.

Tell us a little about yourselfand why you decided to get intoteaching.

I grew up in the Philippines.Before I came to Canada my onlyexperiences abroad were travelingto Bali and Taipei for the Interna-tional Physics Olympiad. Meetingso many people from around theworld encouraged me to dreamabout going abroad for my uni-versity degree.

I didn’t really think it wouldhappen, but I applied to schools inCanada and received an interna-tional scholarship to attend TrentUniversity. I majored in math andphysics and eventually decided togo to graduate school in appliedmath. I went to Western for mymasters and McGill for my doctor-ate. I did a one-year post-doc atYork, and two years at the Univer-sity of Michigan. I accepted myfirst faculty position at the Univer-sity of Manitoba in 2015, thenmoved to Queen’s in 2017. I reallyenjoyed being in Winnipeg, butQueen’s was overall a better placefor me for many reasons includingpersonal reasons.

My father is a retired physicsprofessor in the Philippines. Hegrew up in a squatter’s area, the11th of 11 children. His parents did

not complete much schooling, butthey always understood the valueof education. He was able to go toschool on science scholarships andeventually completed his PhD atPurdue University. He went backto serve as a professor in thePhilippines in the 1980s.

Tell us a bit about your re-search.

My PhD dissertation was ondelay differential equations andnumerical analysis. While com-pleting my postdocs, I startedworking on mathematical biology– basically using mathematicaltools to study biological problems.

My current research looks athow diseases spread in a popula-tion. This helps us find ways toexplain how control efforts, suchas mass vaccination with differenttypes of vaccines, can have differ-ent ramifications for the popula-tion.

What is your proudest accom-plishment so far?

Getting here! When I became aprofessor in Manitoba, a friend

wrote an article celebrating myhiring. It is not very common forFilipinos to become professors.

A common joke is that Filipinoparents all want their kids to gointo something stable, such asnursing. Many Filipinos also cometo Canada through the Live-InCaregiver program. Both of thoseprofessions are very honorableand provide important services tosociety. But there are lots of differ-ent jobs out there and so, while Iwas reluctant to be featured as a‘role model’ in that article, I recog-nized the importance of showingpeople that Filipinos can have awhole variety of careers, includingacademia.

Tell us about your teachingstyle.

In the fall term, I was assignedto teach a calculus class of morethan 600 students. That was by farthe largest class I had ever taughtand it was quite a challenge. Ithink it will be an asset to learnhow to teach such big classes andhow to manage that many stu-

dents. I am still learning.Right now I’m still more com-

fortable teaching smaller classeswhere I can use the blackboard,and check in with the studentsduring a lecture to make sure theyunderstand – working at theirpace, going through the theorems,and using a lot of examples.

Anything you do to unwind?I used to dance salsa and I

haven’t since moving to Kingston– there was too much to do and ittakes me a while to adjust to anew place. I also used to dancetango and ballet recreationally.Hopefully once I am more settledin I can resume that in the future.

What do you feel most grate-ful for?

I come from the Philippines,which is still a developing coun-try, and my whole family is stillthere. I was lucky to be born into amiddle-class family who sup-ported me and taught me to valuemy education early. I am lucky tobe here – most people in thePhilippines would not have thechance to pursue the path I did.

identified faculty renewal as ahigh priority for reinvestment bythe university in support of the ac-ademic mission. The five-year re-newal plan will see 200 new fac-ulty hired, which nearly doublesthe hiring pace of the past sixyears and will result in approxi-mately 10 net new hires per year.

Faculty renewal supportsQueen’s commitment to diversityand inclusion by giving the univer-sity the opportunity to seek proac-tively representation from equity-seeking groups such as women,people with disabilities, Indige-nous Peoples, and visible minori-ties. It will also build on Queen’scurrent areas of research strength.

Search for next principal set to beginBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

The search for the next princi-pal of Queen’s University is nowunderway.

In November, Principal andVice-Chancellor Daniel Woolf an-nounced he will not be seeking athird term. Principal Woolf hasbeen principal since September2009 and his current term is sched-uled to conclude on June 30, 2019.

A Joint Board-Senate SearchCommittee has now been estab-lished to conduct the search

process with the aim of deliveringa recommendation regarding acandidate to the Board of Trustees.This committee is made up of ninemembers of the Board of Trusteesand nine members of the Senate,in addition to Chancellor JimLeech, who will chair the commit-tee.

Most of the committee mem-bers were originally elected bytheir respective bodies to the JointBoard-Senate Committee to Re-view the Principalship last year.They have now transitioned onto

this new committee, along withtwo new faculty members whowere elected to fill vacant posi-tions by the Senate at its recentmeeting.

“The committee will be over-seeing a comprehensive nationaland international search to iden-tify top candidates with the poten-tial to be the next principal ofQueen’s,” says Chancellor JimLeech. “We will keep the univer-sity community up to date on thisprocess as it unfolds over the com-ing year.”

In December, the university is-sued an RFP to hire an executivesearch firm to identify potentialcandidates and facilitate the inter-view process. The aim will be tocarry out the first round of inter-views in the spring and the sec-ond round in the fall. The commit-tee will then work to recommenda candidate to the Board ofTrustees in December. Mental health affects us all, and Jan. 31 has be-come Canada’s most significant day to reflect onthe impact mental health matters can have on allCanadians.

Bell Let’s Talk Day was observed on campus onWednesday with education booths, plenty of socialmedia activity, and a surprise flash mob in the Ath-letics and Recreation Complex (ARC). This fol-lowed the Queen's Gaels hosting special events insupport of mental health awareness and Bell Let’sTalk during the women and men’s home basketballgames on Friday, Jan. 26.

“Our hope is our message is clear through all ofour Bell Let’s Talk Day activities and every day ofthe year: that support is available for those strug-gling with mental health challenges, and it is im-portant to reach out for help,” says Ann Tierney,Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs. “We arepleased to see continued high levels of engagementin Bell’s Let’s Talk among our student athletes, andthe entire campus community. We encourageeveryone to continue these meaningful conversa-tions all year round.”

Last week, it was announced the Bell Let’s Talkcampus campaign was expanded to 128 universityand college campuses across Canada. Additionally,Heather Stuart, the inaugural Bell Canada MentalHealth and Anti-Stigma Chair at Queen’s, partici-pated in a television advertising campaign with Bellto spread five tips to help reduce mental healthstigma.

On Monday, Bell and The Rossy Family Founda-tion announced a joint $1 million donation for thecreation of a national standard for post-secondarystudent mental health to support student successon campuses across Canada. The new standardwill establish mental health best practices at Cana-dian universities, colleges, and institutes to supportstudent mental health and academic success anddeveloped in collaboration with students, staff andfaculty. At Queen’s, funding from the Rossy FamilyFoundation supports embedded counsellors andthe Q Success first-year student transition program.

On Bell Let’s Talk Day, Bell supports mentalhealth initiatives by contributing 5¢ for every appli-cable text, call, tweet, social media video view, anduse of their Facebook frame or Snapchat filter. VisitBell.ca/LetsTalk to find out more.

An Olympic dream come truerick hunt is headed to pyeongchang, south korea, as a referee in long-track speed skating

Rick Hunt’s resume as a long-track speed skating referee is im-pressive. He has officiated atseven World Championships and11 World Cup events.

That resume, however, is aboutto get even better as he will soonbe officiating at the biggest com-petition of them all – the WinterOlympics.

Mr. Hunt, who co-ordinates theteaching labs for the Departmentof Biomedical and Molecular Sci-ences at Queen’s, will soon beheading to Pyeongchang, SouthKorea, where the XXIII OlympicWinter Games will be hosted Feb.9-25.

It’s the highlight of his career,he says, but when he received theinvite back in November, he keptit a secret – even from his wife. Hejust wanted to be sure, he ex-plains. That same day he had beentold that he would be the chief ref-eree for the final World Cup racebefore the Olympics as well as theWorld Junior Championships thatwill follow the Winter Games.

It all seemed a bit much, andthere is that friend who is a bit ofa prankster.

“I just wanted to make sure itwas authentic,” he says with asmile.

But, as he soon found out, itwas all true.

Now, the magnitude of whatlies ahead has sunk in.

“It took a while. It took a cou-ple of weeks for me to realize,” hesays. “Everybody else was excitedfor me and I guess I might havebeen in a mild state of shock. I hadso many things going on that it re-ally didn’t hit me until two orthree weeks afterward, what wasgoing to happen. It’s only beensince Christmas and refereeing theCanadian Olympic Trials that ithas hit me – I’m going to be refer-eeing where these athletes are go-ing to be competing. And now Iam excited.”

This delayed reaction also has

something to do with Mr. Hunt’snature. He’s laid back, easy-going,not one to be flustered easily. He’salso meticulously organized, paysattention to the fine details andbelieves that being a professionalat all times is of the utmost impor-tance. It all makes for an excellentreferee for speed skating. This hasbeen instilled from the very begin-ning of his career by his mentorGuy Chenard – always run everycompetition like it is theOlympics.

The role of the referee is similarto that of a tournament convenerin many other sports, he explains.Creating schedules and pairings,making sure the races are con-ducted in a fair and timely man-ner. He also must handle anycomplaints from team officials.This sometimes can be heated,but, once again, Mr. Hunt’s per-sonality is a perfect fit.

“You can stand there, screamand holler at me all you want.Then it’s ‘OK you said your piece,I agree with you. There’s nothing Ican do. That’s the way the rulesare written but if you can get themchanged, I’ll help you out withit,’” he says. “I’m not intimidatedby anyone and I’m not offendedby a passionate coach saying theirpiece about what they think reallyhappened and their side of things.It’s their job to stick up for theirskaters.”

Mr. Hunt first became involvedin speed skating about 25 yearsago when one of his sons wantedto see the provincial short-trackchampionships being hosted inKingston at the time. Both his sonswere hooked and he along withthem.

As the boys grew, long trackbecame a better fit. He was com-peting as well and at one event he

offered to help a referee who wasworking on his own. He foundthat he enjoyed it more than skat-ing. His career then “evolved”from there, climbing the ladderuntil, now, he will be officiating atthe pinnacle of all sport.

Laid back he may be, but heknows that when he enters therink and his dream becomes a re-ality, the moment will have a pro-found effect.

“When I walk up the stairsonto the infield I guarantee therewill be tears in my eyes,” he says.“I am a very emotional personthat way.”

There has also been some extragood news recently as his wife,Audrey Hunt, the Departmentaland Financial Administrator forthe Department of EmergencyMedicine, has been accepted as avolunteer at Canada House at thePyeongchang Olympics.

Rick Hunt, who co-ordinates the teaching labs for the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at Queen’s, has along track record of success and reliability as a referee in long track speed skating.

Just over a year ago Queen’sUniversity surveyed its benefit-eli-gible employees to gain insightinto the benefit options they valuethe most. The employee benefitssurvey is part of a comprehensivereview of the Queen’s EmployeeBenefits Plan, launched in May2016.

The university’s benefits con-sultant Mercer has analysed thesurvey results and recently pre-sented them to the Multi-Em-ployee Group Employee BenefitsCommittee (MEGEBC) at Queen’s.The MEGEBC is comprised of par-ticipants from university em-ployee groups.

The survey results indicatedthat there is a high level of satis-faction with the current employeebenefit plan and that benefits playa part in an employee’s decision tostay with the university. Dentaland medical are the most highlyvalued benefits, with long-termdisability coverage also rankedhighly by employees. Overall, theresponse rate for the survey washigh and there was good partici-pation across several major em-ployee groups. Possible changes tothe current benefit plan design arebeing explored as part of the re-view process.

“Given that the university hasa single benefits plan for all bene-fits-eligible employees, strikingthe right balance in plan designfor all employee groups will beimportant,” says Dan Bradshaw,Associate Vice-Principal (HumanResources). “The committee iscurrently engaged in discussionsto determine if any changes can bemade to the benefit plan designwithout adding expense to theplan.”

Following the review of theplan, the university will be con-ducting a formal Request for Pro-posals for a benefits provider. TheMEGEBC will recommend criteriato be used in evaluating propo-nents who participate in the Re-quest for Proposals (RFP) process.The RFP process will be con-ducted in accordance with andwill be governed by the policiesand procedures set out in the uni-versity’s Procurement Policy andthe Broader Public Sector Procure-ment Directive. The target forposting of an RFP is mid-2018.

CANADIAN ATHLETES AT SMITHin november 2016, smith school of business and the canadian olympic committee struck a partnership to provide scholarships for olympic andparalympic athletes. over eight years, some 1,200 athletes will be eligible to enroll in various smith programs. With the Winter olympics beinghosted Feb. 9-25 in pyeongchang, south korea, we’re highlighting coc/cpc athletes who have attended smith.

Jayson Krause: BobsleighIf you’ve ever watched bob-

sledders hurtling down an icytrack, you’ve probably wondered,Why on earth would someone dothat? Believe it or not, four-timeCanadian bobsleigh champ JaysonKrause has asked the same ques-tion.

“In the pilot seat you’re so fo-cused, you don’t feel the speed.Then you stand by the track andsee how fast other bobsleds aregoing and you think, ‘God, howdo I do this?’”

Jayson, who has completed Ex-ecutive Education at Smith Schoolof Business, didn’t intend to be abobsledder.

He grew up in Okotoks, Alta.,and, at 20, playing junior football,heard that bobsleigh training wasa superb way to get stronger forthe gridiron. Soon he found him-self pushing a sled and competingfor Canada.

The real trick to bobsleigh, hesays, is to relax despite the speed(in excess of 150 km/h) and crush-ing G-force in the turns. “The nat-ural tendency is to tense up. Butwhen you panic, that’s when youget in trouble,” he says.

After a stellar eight-year careerpiloting four-man and two-manteams, Krause retired in 2006. To-

day, at 41, he’s managing directorat Kraukman Inc., a Calgary-based coaching and consultingfirm that blends high-performanceathletics, applied neuroscienceand modern management tech-niques.

Jayson says he teaches busi-nesspeople how to be better lead-ers by employing principles simi-

lar to those used by top-level ath-letes in training: warm-up, exer-cise and cool-down.

This process, says Jayson “canaccelerate our understanding ofour performance as business lead-ers, so we can engage in the dailypractice of leadership, which ac-celerates development and im-pact.”

Jayson Krause, a four-time national champion in bobsleigh, has completedExecutive Education at Smith School of Business.

Anne Fergusson:Sitting volleyball

Ask Anne Fergusson to explainhow sitting volleyball differs fromregular volleyball and she’ll firstpoint out the obvious: players sitrather than stand. Next, becausethe net is lower, the ball travels ashorter distance between oppos-ing teams, and so the game isfaster.

Growing up in Carleton Place,Anne played all types of sports:basketball, soccer, badminton,track. Then in high school her vol-leyball coach told her about sit-ting volleyball. Anne, who wasborn with no left hand, had neverheard of the sport. “I Youtubed itand decided it was the coolestthing ever,” she says.

Today, at 22, Anne is onCanada’s national team. She was

there in 2015 when the team wonbronze at Toronto’s Parapan AmGames and she hopes to competein the upcoming World Champi-onships in the Netherlands.

Last year she graduated fromQueen’s with a degree in mechan-ical engineering, then got herGraduate Diploma in Business atSmith.

One thing Anne especiallyliked about the GDB program wasits teamwork approach. That’salso her favourite part of volley-ball.

“Many of my teammates havefaced a lot of adversity in theirlives,” she says, noting that sev-eral have had limbs amputated.“So, for me, the exceptional peo-ple I play with is what’s special.”

Anne Fergusson, a member of theCanadian national sitting volleyballteam, graduated last year fromQueen’s with a degree in mechanicalengineering, then got her GraduateDiploma in Business at Smith.

Lee Parkhill:Sailing

On the day in November 2016that Smith School of Business andthe Canadian Olympic Committeeannounced their partnership, LeeParkhill called his alma mater, theUniversity of Guelph, to get histranscripts. He wanted to apply toSmith right away.

“The timing was perfect,” herecalls. Three months earlier, Leehad sailed at the Rio Olympics.Afterward, at 27, he retired andlooked forward to whatever camenext. “One thing I knew, I wantedto go back to school.”

When Lee was nine monthsold, his parents bought a sailboat.He practically grew up on the wa-ter around his hometown ofOakville, sailing most weekdaysas a teen and racing on weekends.

Lee, who recently completed anAMBA degree, says that athleteshave many of the skills businessesdesire: teamwork, a willingness tobe coached and an ability to adaptquickly. Oh, and resiliency. Lee

knows quite something about that.Competing in the Olympic tri-

als Laser event in 2011, he becamea late favourite to make TeamCanada. Then, a false start dis-qualified him in a key race — allbut ending his hope of going tothe London Olympics.

Yet Lee was undeterred. Fouryears later, he won bronze at thePan Am Games in Toronto, beforeheading to Rio. “Getting a medalon home soil, putting that pastdisappointment behind me,” hesays, “that was a high point forsure.”

Lee Parkhill competed at the RioOlympics in 2016. He recentlycompleted an AMBA degree at Smith.

Jessica Zelinka:Heptathlon

Jessica Zelinka says she en-rolled in Queen’s Master of Man-agement Innovation & Entrepre-neurship program in part becauseshe finds the team environmentsimilar to athletics.

“The faculty, students and net-work are my new support teamthat will enable me to ‘go for it’knowing failure is a part of thejourney, just like in track, and it'sabout resilience.”

“It’s a roller coaster. You mighthave had a bad hurdle run butyou have to put your head downand clear your mind for the nextevent. You have to be able to com-partmentalize, switch roles andleave the bad behind.”

Sounds like the skills everygreat business leader needs, too.

The appeals of diversity, equity, and inclusionThis column is written by Gur-

jit Sandhu, a Queen’s alumna andfaculty member in the Depart-ment of Surgery at the Universityof Michigan. In this piece, Dr.Sandhu reflects upon the mean-ings of diversity, equity, and inclu-sion. It was first published on theTogether We Are blog site(queensu.ca/connect/equity/).

In keeping with the theme ofthe 2017-2018 Together We Areblog, I am in the midst of lookingahead, only to find myself look-ing back to my time at Queen’sUniversity. The knowledge andunderstanding I developed aboutdiversity, equity, and inclusioncontinues to provide me with amultifaceted lens of inquiry formy current position in medicaleducation. Although the contextand content of the work may havechanged, the foundational princi-ples of equity remain the same.

While at Queen’s University, Itransitioned through the roles ofstudent, staff and faculty mem-ber; contributed to programs andpolicies; collaborated on training;and contemplated theory. I recog-nize now that in each of theseroles and responsibilities, I wasdeveloping an understanding ofdiversity, equity, and inclusion indifferent ways depending on howI was positioned. I would thendraw on each of these approaches

as needed to make a meaningfulconnection with Queen’s commu-nity members to advance our col-lective commitment to equity.

A colleague recently remindedme of a framework for thinkingabout separate, yet associated, ap-peals – those of ethos, pathos, andlogos. This framework also helpsme organize several approachesthat resonate with me when en-gaging with diversity, equity, andinclusion.

Ethos is an ethical appeal. Itembodies an unbiased presenta-tion with a great deal of intention-ality in choosing the right vocabu-lary. Mahzarin Banaji andAnthony Greenwald explore hid-den and implicit biases in theirbook, Blindspot. Using the Im-plicit-Association Test, a methodthey developed about 20 yearsago, they unpack individual re-sponses to better understand howexperiences manifest into hiddenbiases. The focus is on less reflec-tive parts of our minds and the in-fluence this has on decisions we

make about ourselves and othersocial groups. When I think abouthiring practices, employing ethoshas a great deal of relevance.

Pathos is an emotional appeal.The audience is persuaded basedby an emotional experience andhow they are made to feel. Thework of the world-class Center forPositive Organization at the Uni-versity of Michigan disrupts thepervasive story of a fiercely com-petitive business world. The focusis on appreciative inquiry, collab-oration, and success through di-versity of partnerships. Central tothe purpose of the center is posi-tive culture and positive relation-ships. When I think about com-munity building and engagement,it is important to include pathosin the approach.

Logos is a logical appeal. Thepersuasive content is deliveredwith heavy reliance on facts andsupportive statistics. In his bookThe Diversity Bonus, Scott Pagemakes the mathematical and eco-nomic argument for enhancingteam diversity. He shows evi-dence through algorithms, for-mulas, and net results. The bot-tom-line: leveraging cognitivediversity results in better out-comes. These measurable out-comes, for example, includehigher profit margins, increasingscientific innovation, and morein-depth inquiry in our class-

rooms. When I think about ad-missions strategies, logos is at thefore.

Looking back and lookingahead at diversity, equity, and in-clusion, the lens of ethos, pathos,and logos reminds me that thiswork is foundational to thestrength of communities, institu-tions, and who we are as individ-

uals. As I think about the EquityOffice and the Human Rights Of-fice at Queen’s University, I won-der if it is possible to entirelyleave a place.

For me, the experiences, rela-tionships, and milestones are in-delible and palpable. They havebecome a part of the landscape of

A long-time bureaucrat in thefederal government and senator,Michael Pitfield played an influ-ential role in the developmentand introduction of the Queen’sExecutive Master of Business Ad-ministration program at SmithSchool of Business. When Michael Pitfield, onceCanada’s most powerful bureau-crat, died on Oct. 19 at 80 ofParkinson’s disease, obituariesnoted his long association withPierre Trudeau and his behind-the-scenes role in bringing homeCanada’s Constitution in 1982.

Pitfield’s decades-spanning ca-

reer in public service is well docu-mented. He was Clerk of the PrivyCouncil under Prime MinisterPierre Trudeau in the 1970s andearly 1980s. He then moved to thesenate.

Lesser known is Pitfield’s con-tribution to business education atSmith School of Business.

Pitfield did not attend Smith.He graduated with a law degreefrom McGill. But he had a hand inlaunching its groundbreaking Ex-ecutive MBA program 25 yearsago. For a time, he even taught aclass.

His involvement begins withGordon Cassidy, who taught atthe school for many years. In theearly 1990s, Cassidy envisioned a“virtual university” that would letpeople get their MBA from any-where in Canada while still work-

ing full time.The result, the Queen’s EMBA,

launched in Ottawa in 1992. A na-tional program followed, becom-ing the first of its kind in Canadato offer classes by videoconfer-ence. TV monitors and cameraswere placed in seminar roomsacross the country, connected byhigh-speed phone lines with two-way voice and video.

To nurture the program, Cas-sidy set up an advisory board ofhigh-profile leaders from businesand government. Pitfield, by thena senator, not only sat on theboard, he became “a particularlyvaluable advocate and contribu-tor” to ensure the program’s suc-cess, according to Getting Down toBusiness, a book chronicling thehistory of business education atQueen’s by professors emeriti

Mervin Daub (Com’66), and BruceBuchan.

“He didn’t just advise. Hewanted to get more involved,” re-calls George Thwaites (Com’78,EMBA’94), who was in the firstEMBA graduate class.

One way Pitfield helped was toteach a class at Queen’s on gov-ernment and business relations.

Thwaites says students wereimmediately in awe of their fa-mous teacher but soon also cameto admire his abilities in the class-room.

More than just politics, Pitfieldwove everything from Plato andphilosophy to history into histeaching.

“He really challenged us andmade us think differently,” saysThwaites. “I think he had a hugeimpact on the students.”

This year’s Black HistoryMonth at Queen’s is examiningthe struggles faced and overcomeby black people both here atQueen’s and throughout theworld.

It is also looking at how theircollective strength through those

moments has shaped their presentand future.

The African and CaribbeanStudents’ Association (ACSA) andthe Queen’s Black Academic Soci-ety (QBAS) are working togetherand hosted an opening ceremonyon Sunday, Feb. 4 at RenaissanceEvent Venue in downtownKingston.

QBAS will be holding talks on

diversity and mental wellnesswithin the black community, ex-ploring structural sources of men-tal wellness obstacles for personsof colour and ways in which thecommunity can work together toeliminate obstacles for individualsseeking resources and help.

They will also be hosting a so-cial mixer, and running a uniquecampaign within the Queen’scommunity centred on one of itsmost prominent black alumni,Robert Sutherland.

“His story is carved into thevery structures of Queen’s Univer-sity and it lives through the blackexcellence and resilience ofQueen’s black students andalumni,” says Asha Gordon(Artsci’18). “Through a media andtabling campaign called “I AmRobert Sutherland”, we hope toshow his story is both a narrativeof the past and of the present. Thefaces of the Robert Sutherlandlegacy are all around us.”

ACSA will also be looking atthe history of black people withinthe Queen’s context, and high-lighting their story of resilience.As one example, they will behosting Queen’s employee andformer journalist Edward Thomas(Sc’06, MSc’11) who, on the 100thanniversary of the event, has in-vestigated the expulsion of blackmedical students in 1918, andwhat happened to them afterQueen’s.

“We chose the theme of re-silience because black peoplehave gone through so much andhave come out stronger than be-fore,” says Elorm Vowotor(Artsci'18). “Another focus thisyear is on bringing the commu-nity into our celebrations, soeveryone – Queen’s students andthe broader Kingston community– is welcome to join us at ourevents. We are inclusive and wantto welcome everyone to learnmore about the history of black

people in Canada.”The group will also host a

dance workshop, and an event cel-ebrating African and Caribbeanfood, with traditional dishes suchas Jamaican jerk chicken, WestAfrican jollof, and Guayanesepholourie.

Both QBAS and ACSA receivedgrants from the Alma Mater Soci-ety and the Deputy Provost (Aca-demic Operations and Inclusion)to help fund this year’s activities.The two groups will be regularlyproviding updates and photosthroughout the month through so-cial media.

An opportunity to build bridges, strengthen tiesas the Queen’s national scholar in political philosophy and critical prison studies lisa guenther brings international experience to Queen’s

Lisa Guenther’s academic ca-reer has taken her around theworld. Now, the Queen’s NationalScholar program has brought herback home to Canada.

Arriving as a joint appointmentin the Department of Philosophyand the Graduate Program in Cul-tural Studies this winter term, Dr.Guenther is the Queen’s NationalScholar in Political Philosophyand Critical Prison Studies. Estab-lished in 1985, the objective of theQNS program is to attract out-standing early and mid-careerprofessors to Queen’s to “enrichteaching and research in newly-developing fields of knowledge aswell as traditional disciplines.”

Dr. Guenther’s research, sheexplains, is at the intersection ofphenomenology, political philoso-phy, and critical prison studies,with further specializations infeminism and philosophy of race.

Her career path is just as varied– from New Zealand, to theUnited States, and a brief stop inAustralia. Each place, Dr. Guen-ther says, has had a significant in-fluence on her research.

After completing her PhD fromthe University of Toronto – havingwritten her dissertation at an iso-lated cabin in the Yukon – her firstacademic position took her toNew Zealand where she taughtfor nearly five years at the Univer-sity of Auckland.

Moving halfway around theworld was a massive change, but

it also provided an opportunity toimmerse herself in somethingnew, yet familiar. She was in-trigued that the Indigenous Maoriculture and language is far moreintegrated into the mainstreamthan it is in Canada.

“Moving to Aotearoa NewZealand was a huge shift, but itwas a really exciting place to liveand I am really thankful for thatopportunity. It challenged me tothink about issues and questions Imight not have encountered if Istayed on a more narrow aca-demic track within Canada,” shesays. “Seeing how Indigenousways of being and knowing shapethe university, the public schoolsystem, and national politics therewas incredible. It opened my eyesto different forms of settler colo-

nialism and different pathways todecolonization.”

At the same time she also madeconnections with a number offeminist philosophers in Aus-tralia, which also influenced herareas of specialization.

While she enjoyed her time atthe University of Auckland, Dr.Guenther felt a need to be closerto home and accepted an assistantprofessorship at Vanderbilt Uni-versity in Nashville, Tenn. Thenext decade would be formativeyears for her career.

Very quickly Dr. Guenther rec-ognized that the communities sur-rounding her – the university, herneighbourhood, the city ofNashville – were clearly segre-gated based upon race and class.She began to read and research

about the legacy of slavery andurban space.

In the midst of trying to come togrips with what she was witness-ing, political activist and scholarAngela Davis arrived at the De-partment of Philosophy for amonth-long seminar on slaverywhich Dr. Guenther audited. Davisbegan the seminar by explainingthat the 13th Amendment abolishesslavery except for those duly con-victed of committing a crime.

“To this day slavery is not for-mally abolished for people inprison,” Dr. Guenther says.“Learning this changed the direc-tion of my research and my life inmany ways. I started thinking andwriting about prisons, mass incar-ceration, solitary confinement,and in particular the effect of ex-treme isolation on people’s capac-ity to think clearly and to perceivethe world around them. This res-onated for me as a phenomenolo-gist because it raised questionsabout the nature of perception, ex-perience and consciousness. Whyis it that when we are deprived ofa regular experience of sharing aspace with other people that wedon’t just get lonely or bored butwe actually, in many cases, losethe capacity to keep track of one’sboundaries of one’s self?”

As she explored further, Dr.Guenther says she felt she neededto be in contact and accountable tothose in prison. As a result shestarted volunteering in prisons inNashville and eventually set upand facilitated a discussion groupfor men on death row. Initially the

focus of the discussion was onphilosophy but broadened to col-lective inquiry on themes such asrestorative justice, radical peda-gogy, and friendship.

However, once again she wasfeeling the call to return to Canadaand the Queen’s National Scholarprogram provided the opportunity.

At Queen’s she is bringing allthe experience she has gained out-side of Canada and will apply thislens to her homeland.

“On a personal level I havewanted to come back and live inCanada for many years. But alsoin a philosophical sense and in apolitical way it’s really importantto me to grapple with the historythat made me who I am,” shesays. “So seeking to understandthe way that colonial power andcarceral power work together inCanada is also part of my ownprocess of becoming accountablefor my own position within thosenetworks in power.”

As a Queen’s National Scholar,Dr. Guenther sees an opportunitybuild bridges and to strengthen theties that are already established be-tween Queen’s, communitygroups, and community memberswho are affected by prisons. Shealso hopes to help strengthen thenetwork of scholars and activistsworking on these issues.

On Jan. 18, The HonourableElizabeth Dowdeswell, the Lieu-tenant Governor of Ontario, deliv-ered the Donald Gow MemorialLecture.

The Lieutenant Governor re-flected on her experience over thepast year attending over 100Canada 150 events, and her partic-ipation in the celebrations mark-ing our country’s history andgrowth. She reflected on the callfor reconciliation from Indigenouscommunities and discussed theopportunities and challenges fac-

ing Ontario in the future in an in-creasingly globalized and com-plex world.

Steve Orsini, Secretary of theCabinet, Head of the Ontario Pub-lic Service, and Clerk of the Execu-tive Council, spoke Jan. 12 abouttransforming the Ontario PublicService to adapt to the future. Mr.Orsini focused on the continuingjourney of the Ontario public serv-ice to become a more client-fo-cused, innovative, efficient, andinclusive organization that is pre-pared for rapid change.

A program which has broughtclass and community workshops,family events, clubs, and campopportunities to tens of thousandsof Indigenous youth acrossCanada is being recognized with anational education award.

The Queen’s Engineering Out-reach team from the Faculty of En-gineering and Applied Science re-ceived the Actua ExperienceAward – Indigenous Youth inSTEM. The award was presentedat Actua’s annual awards night inOttawa Thursday, Jan. 18. TheCanadian charity focuses on sci-ence, technology, engineering, andmath (STEM) education amongyouth.

Engineering Outreach runsmultiple programs designed toengage Indigenous youth throughAboriginal Access to Engineering(AAE), which was the primary fo-cus of the award. Workshops inpartner First Nation grade schoolsinvolve hands-on engineering de-sign projects that complement theOntario science curriculum, inte-grate robotics in math and lan-guage classes, and explore cultur-ally-linked science topics, asexamples.

On campus, AAE has hostedEngineering Week for AboriginalYouth (EngWAY) since 2012. Dur-ing EngWAY, Indigenous youth inmiddle school come to stay oncampus and take engineering de-sign courses related to Indigenouscommunity issues. AAE also pro-

vides bursaries to the Queen’sSummer Engineering Academyfor Indigenous high school stu-dents, and works in partnershipwith the student-directed ScienceQuest program to bring local In-digenous youth to their daycamps. In addition, AAE producesa series of comic books about en-gineering disciplines, featuringQueen’s students and graduates,with curriculum-linked plans tohelp teachers across Canada usethem in class.

Outreach, combined with anIndigenous student success pro-gram within the Faculty of Engi-neering and Applied Science, hasresulted in a significant increase ofIndigenous students enrolling inEngineering programs at Queen’s– from four self-identified stu-dents in 2011 to 37 students this ac-ademic year.

“Over the past five years, wehave engaged more than 20,000Indigenous youth, and we con-tinue to broaden our outreach toIndigenous communities rightacross Canada,” says MelanieHoward, Director of Outreach andAboriginal Access with the Fac-ulty of Engineering and Applied

Science. “Through our uniquemodel, we partner with teachersand schools to deliver tailoredcontent which matches with mathand science curriculum, whilepaying attention to Indigenouscontributions and cultural link-ages whenever possible.”

Actua is a network with 35post-secondary members, includ-ing Queen’s. In granting an awardto the Queen’s Engineering Out-reach team, the selection commit-tee was impressed by their dedica-tion to the key components inActua’s Indigenous STEM out-reach goals. In particular, Aborigi-nal Access to Engineering’s focuson long-term community engage-ment and high-quality contenttied to Indigenous worldviewsand STEM delivered by Indige-nous instructors and role modelswere particularly noted.

“Congratulations to theQueen’s Engineering Outreachteam on all their efforts, whichhave culminated in this meaning-ful award,” says Kevin Deluzio,Dean, Faculty of Engineering andApplied Science. “This uniqueprogram, which is predominantlyrun by Indigenous professionalsemployed by Queen’s, has suc-cessfully encouraged many In-digenous youth to stay in schooland pursue post-secondary stud-ies in the STEM fields. Intercultural awarenesstraining sees big jumpin participationBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

The number of students whohave participated in interculturaltraining on campus to date forthis academic year is alreadynearly double the 2016-17 total.

A total of 1,520 students, mostin student leadership positions,have attended tailored sessions of-fered by the Queen’s UniversityInternational Centre (QUIC). Thisincludes 152 students who havecompleted the newly-expanded,five-session Intercultural Aware-ness Certificate program deliveredby staff at QUIC and the Four Di-rections Aboriginal Student Cen-tre. The certificate has receivedhigh satisfaction scores amongparticipants: 4.2 to 4.7 out of 5.

“We are thrilled to see this in-creased interest in interculturallearning, as well as the high levelsof satisfaction with the certificateprogram,” says Jyoti Kotecha,QUIC Director. “Our goal is toprovide relevant, engaging con-tent and context that promotesself-reflection and a commitmentto integrate and apply what islearned into participants’ dailylives and actions.”

The certificate and the individ-ual sessions provide opportunitiesfor participants to learn how to:

• Describe the concept of cul-ture and apply this concept to eval-uate their own personal cultures;

• Identify various dimensionsof culture that will help them ef-fectively engage in an intercul-tural context;

• Practise various skills thatwill help them be more effectivein intercultural interactions;

• Recognize their ownstrengths and challenges when in-teracting with cultural commonality and difference;

• Evaluate their experienceswith cultural difference and com-monality to continue the develop-ment of their intercultural compe-tence;

• Gain greater awareness andunderstanding of Indigenous cul-ture; and

• Gain greater understandingand empathy for the lived experi-ence of Western colonialism by Indigenous peoples in the Americas

“Intercultural awareness andeducation is an important way wecan promote inclusivity in ourcampus community, and promoterespectful interactions, and understanding among students, facultyand staff who have diverse identi-ties and backgrounds,” saysCorinna Fitzgerald, AssistantDean, Student Life and Learning.“It is great to see so many stu-dents develop more skills that wilsupport community-building.”

Putting aninternationalspotlight onundergraduateresearch BY SARAH LINDERS, SENIORCOMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Undergraduate students acrossQueen’s who receive top marks ontheir research papers are now in-vited to submit them to the Un-dergraduate Awards 2018 pro-gram, a prestigious internationalcompetition.

The awards, presented eachyear at the UndergraduateAwards Global Summit in Dublin,Ireland, celebrate undergraduateresearch from students across alldisciplines and around the world.Global winners from each cate-gory receive a medal at the cere-mony, and the top 10 per cent ofapplicants in each category re-ceive the designation of highlycommended entrant. Last year, theprogram received nearly 6,500submissions from 299 institutionsin 47 countries.

Students can submit up tothree research papers, each Agrade or equivalent. There are 25categories, ranging from art his-tory to engineering to life sciences.Each category has different crite-ria for submission, depending onthe nature of the discipline.

Global and highly commendedwinners will be eligible to spendfour days in Dublin for the GlobalSummit, providing opportunitiesto meet renowned researchersfrom around the world, presentfindings in “three minute thesis”presentations, and explore the his-toric city of Dublin. Global winnerresearch papers will be publishedin the Undergraduate Journal todisplay the high level of under-graduate research being pro-duced.

Eden Gelgoot (Artsci’17) wasthe global winner for the 2017 Art

History and Theory category. Heressay focused on the role of theUNESCO World Heritage List inthe commemoration of the SecondWorld War, based on her finalterm paper for the course Conser-vation Principles: Cultural Her-itage Preservation.

“I am very grateful for therecognition I received from theUndergraduate Awards,” says Ms.Gelgoot. “It has provided me withthe opportunity to present re-search that I am passionate aboutto an international audience, topublish my work, to travel toDublin, to learn about the workbeing done globally in diverse ar-eas of research, and to build an in-ternational network of friends. Iwould highly recommend that un-dergraduate students at Queen’sconsider submitting their work.The work has already been doneand the submission process is sim-ple, so why not take a chance athaving your work recognized andwinning an opportunity of a life-time?”

Sari Ohsada (Artsci’19) was oneof the highly commended entrantswith her submission for the 2017Social Sciences: Anthropology &Cultural Studies category. Her es-say explored how to facilitatesmoother adaption and resettle-ment for Syrian refugees who es-caped a combination of drought in2006 and civil war starting in 2011.She originally wrote the essay forthe course Cross-cultural ResearchMethods.

“Being part of the Undergradu-

ate Awards Global Summit 2017 inDublin was one of the most en-riching experiences of my life.Meeting 130 undergraduate stu-dents from across the world re-minded me that there are numer-ous disciplines and differentapproaches to conducting well-thought research,” says Ms.Ohsada. “At the same time, I wasalso amazed by the interdiscipli-nary nature of our research topics,as they often linked with eachother and related to more thanone category.”

Welding is an important manufacturing process across many sectors of today’s global economy –from automotive, to aerospace,medical, and consumer goods.When working on products likecars or pacemakers, where livescould be on the line, it’s importanthat every component is built asintended. This can be a challengewhen spending an extra secondper part makes a difference to thebottom line.

Enter Paul Webster (Sc’06,PhD’13) and Roger Bowes (Sc’92).In 2012, the pair worked withQueen’s to found Laser Depth Dynamics (LDD) and commercializea technology Dr. Webster co-de-veloped with associate professorJames Fraser, who teachesphysics. The technology, called inline coherent imaging (ICI), allowfor direct measurement of weldpenetration depth for laser weld-ing. This is done using a near-in-frared measurement beam to en-

sure high quality in real-time.“The story of our company is

one of bringing the right elementstogether to create success,” saysDr. Webster, LDD’s chief technol-ogy officer and co-founder. “Wecombined the support of a leadinguniversity with strong industryconnections and the right intellec-tual property policies and techni-cal transfer capabilities to createan impactful product which re-duces waste for companies andimproves product quality for con-sumers.”

Recently, the Kingston-basedcompany was purchased by IPGPhotonics Corporation, the worldleader in high-performance fibrelasers and amplifiers. The com-pany aims to incorporate LDD’stechnology into its laser weldingsolutions to drive adoption of thisadvanced technology throughoutmanufacturing of metal parts. Be-coming part of a bigger, interna-tional organization will meaneven more global exposure forLDD’s products.

“LDD’s weld monitoring sys-

tems and accessories significantlyenhance IPG’s portfolio of indus-try-leading beam delivery prod-ucts and laser welding solutions,”said Felix Stukalin, IPG’s seniorvice president of North Americanoperations. “LDD’s ability to mon-itor weld quality in real time andensure process consistency is in-creasingly important within auto-mated production environments.”

Laser Depth Dynamics was ini-tially formed with support fromDr. Webster’s thesis supervisor,Dr. Fraser; the Department ofPhysics, Engineering Physics andAstronomy; and PARTEQ Innova-tions, the university’s technologytransfer organization that is nowpart of the Queen’s Office of Part-nerships and Innovation. IPG Pho-tonics was also involved from theearly days, supplying equipmentfor the research and in helpingLDD find early market potential.

John Fisher, Interim Vice-Princi-pal (Research) says success storieslike Laser Depth Dynamics demon-strate the value of the research thatis conducted at Queen’s.

“This is an example of a re-search idea, identified and ad-vanced by a student and profes-sor, funded by research grants,and, with support from the uni-versity’s technology transfer team,was patented, spun-off as a busi-ness, and was successfully com-mercialized,” says Dr. Fisher.“This story showcases the innova-tion ecosystem at work here atQueen’s, the important role ourOffice of Partnerships and Innova-tion plays in fostering economicgrowth, and how critical the sup-port of the Ontario government isfor our innovation programs. Wecongratulate the Laser Depth Dy-namics team on this exciting newsas they become part of a globalleader in its field.”

With the purchase, LaserDepth Dynamics will become IPGPhotonics (Canada), and will re-main in its existing Kingston of-fice location on Railway Street.About half of its employees areQueen’s graduates, and Dr. Web-ster suggests they may add moreQueen’s talent in the future.

Queen’s to host 2021 U SPORTS women’s basketball finalsBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

The best university women’sbasketball players in the countrywill be coming to Queen’s in 2021,as the university has been namedthe host of the U SPORTSWomen’s Basketball NationalChampionship.

“Hosting a national champi-onship of this calibre is a wonder-ful opportunity to showcaseQueen’s, our athletics program,and our outstanding student-ath-letes,” says Leslie Dal Cin, Execu-tive Director, Queen’s Athletics &Recreation. “We look forward towelcoming teams from across thecountry to compete in what prom-ises to be an exciting tournament.”

The championship will be heldfrom Thursday, March 11 to Sun-day, March 14, 2021. The Queen’swomen’s basketball team will earnautomatic entry into the tourna-ment as hosts, though they areperennially among the best teamsin the country, finishing fourth atthe 2017 tournament hosted by theUniversity of Victoria.

“For our players in first andsecond year, this is an opportunityto play at a national champi-onship, which is a highlight for

our student-athletes,” says Gaelshead coach Dave Wilson. “From ateam standpoint, this will cer-tainly be a motivating factor, and

will undoubtedly be beneficial forour recruiting over the next twoyears.”

Queen’s is no stranger to host-ing national championships. Theuniversity was home to the men’svolleyball championship in 2012,the women’s rugby championshipin 2015, and most recently, thewomen’s hockey championship in2017.

The event, which features apartnership with TourismKingston, will also bring manyvisitors to the city, including fam-ily members, friends, and fans ofthe visiting teams. There will alsobe opportunities for local basket-ball players and coaches to learnfrom some of the best basketballminds in the country.

U SPORTS also announced thatRyerson University will host the2019 tournament in Toronto, whileCarleton University and the Uni-versity of Ottawa will share host-ing duties for the 2020 tournamentin Ottawa.

head of the Department of Urologyacting Dean of the Faculty of

health sciences christopher simp-son is pleased to announce thatbenoit-antoine bacon, provost andvice-principal (academic), has reap-pointed D. robert siemens as head

of the Department of urology, be-ginning Jan. 1, 2018. Dr. siemens willhold the appointment until June 30,2022.

Dr. siemens graduated fromQueen’s university in 1988 with hisbachelor of science, where he alsoearned his Doctor of medicine in1992. he went on to complete hisresidency in urology in 1997. in2000, he finished his fellowship inurologic oncology at the universityof iowa.

Dr. siemens first joined the Fac-ulty of health sciences at Queen’s in2000 as an assistant professor inurology. he was promoted to associ-ate professor in 2006, and then pro-fessor in 2011. he currently holdscross-appointments in the Depart-ment of oncology and the Depart-ment of biomedical and molecularsciences. Dr. siemens was first ap-pointed as head of the Departmentin urology in 2012. in 2013, he wasnamed director of the centre for ap-plied urological research.

he has published over 150 peer-reviewed original manuscripts andbook chapters. he has served on theexecutive board of many researchsocieties and national as well as in-ternational specialty associations. heis currently starting his second termas editor-in-chief of the canadian ur-ological association Journal.
