• Authority is something held by position or contract, expertise or office.

• Leadership is an action that individuals can choose to take- or not- as challenges arise that require adaptation in order to be addressed.

• People not in authority may also exercise leadership.

Most long standing issues in organizations or groups arise from attempting to treat adaptive challenges as technical problems – trying to fix them with a quick solve, an expert, a one correct strategy.

Treating a technical problem as an adaptive challenge is also problematic. No committees are necessary to change a light bulb!

Many larger issues are a combination of technical problems and adaptive challenges, and sorting what approach should be taken to address components of an issue is essential for progress.

In the face of challenges, part of what is at stake is the loss of:• a certain set of behaviors• an identity• a long held belief or comfort.
