• Authority is something held by position or contract, expertise or office.
• Leadership is an action that individuals can choose to take- or not- as challenges arise that require adaptation in order to be addressed.

• People in authority may exercise leadership, but they may not.
• People not in authority may also exercise leadership.

Most long standing issues in organizations or groups arise from attempting to treat adaptive challenges as technical problems – trying to fix them with a quick solve, an expert, a one correct strategy.

Treating a technical problem as an adaptive challenge is also problematic. No committees are necessary to change a light bulb!

Many larger issues are a combination of technical problems and adaptive challenges, and sorting what approach should be taken to address components of an issue is essential for progress.

In the face of challenges, part of what is at stake is the loss of:• a certain set of behaviors• an identity• a long held belief or comfort.
Adaptive Leadership
Is exercising leadership challenging?

In challenging situations, there is great pressure to quickly restore balance and to rescue from unsettledness.

Challenge prompts effective leaders to commit to the opportunity for change; not to squander the opportunity but to face difficult situations with an eye toward not surviving, rather, thriving into the future

‘Honoring the reality that leadership processes will be accompanied by distress means having compassion for the pain that comes with deep change.

Distress may come with the territory of change, but from a strategic perspective, disturbing people is not the point or the purpose, but a consequence.

YOU as Leader

… defined as a cohort of people born during the same time period (which may be measured as 20 or 30 years, depending on the researcher). As a cohort, they experience the same pivotal, cultural events while at the same age. These events represent their shared reference points; for example World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, the Beatles, a government coup, a technological advancement, a natural disaster.
A generation is …
A Staff of Generations

We need to consciously pass on the knowledge and experience of older generations and learn about the current realities and views of the future from those who are younger.

TEAMWORK • Agree as a group to assign various parts of the task
to different members of the group
• Agree on a timeframe for task completion
• Individuals work independently
• Work is reported back to the group
Value of Synergy
Teamwork vs. Teams

TEAM • Much of “the work” is around team formation and
maintenance
• The purpose and goals are set by the team through collective dialogue
• The highest value here is “synergy,” creating something together that is more than the task.
