Currently, Joey isthe Director of Information Technology for a local data company in Sacramento, CA. In this role, Joeymanages a team of IT professionals that run a website used throughout the world. Prior to this role,Joey’s experience was in IT at a K-12 education agency. Joey has also served as a TBP chapter secretaryand president of the Sacramento Valley Alumni Chapter. Rachel Alexander (CA U ’15) has a B.S. in CivilEngineering (the other type of CE) from California State University, Sacramento. She currently works forSacramento County Department of Airports as an Assistant Engineer. Rachel performs design work andproject management for a variety of runway, taxiway, and roadway projects across the four airportsoperated by the Department. After serving in her collegiate chapter at CA Upsilon, Rachel has served aspresident and secretary of the Sacramento Valley Alumni Chapter. About the Session: Showing up for someone who is struggling with their mentalhealth is a powerful and important skill, but many of us don't know what to say whensomeone shares. Validate-Appreciate-Refer (V-A-R) is Active Minds' simple,revolutionary tool that empowers people to have meaningful conversations withthose around them. Through this presentation, participants will be equipped to actively listen andeffectively respond when someone lets them know they are having a hard time. A conversation canmake all the difference and help prevent a crisis from developing later. Join Active Minds for aninteractive and engaging conversation about mental health and gain tangible skills to promote a climatethat is supportive of mental wellness. About the Session: Dr. Lindvall is assistant dean for graduate studies, School ofEngineering and Applied Sciences at Northwestern University. Having a graduatedegree in your future can be very important for many reasons. Deciding when to goto graduate school can be a very difficult decision. The options include staying inschool after completing the BS degree, working full-time and going to school part-time, or working for afew years and going back to school full-time. We will also look at the ASEE Profiles to learn about the sizeand demographics of all engineering graduate programs. Come prepared to ask questions and interactwith the speaker! About the Presenter: Bruce Lindvall is responsible for the management and growth of existing andfuture graduate degree programs at McCormick. He works closely with others to coordinate strategicplanning, integrated brand marketing, and the student learning environment.Bruce is also responsiblefor communication with prospective students and applicants, while overseeing the MS and PhDadmissions processes in McCormick. He is also responsible for the student environment which includes1000 PhD students and nearly 600 MS students. He is also responsible for the BS/MS program which isnow over 150 new students each year. Bruce is the Northwestern GEM University representative andserves on the GEM Board of Directors. Recruiting primarily from the GEM Fellowship database, theMcCormick School of Engineering has more than tripled the number of underrepresented minority PhDstudents enrolled at Northwestern. Before joining Northwestern, he worked at the College Board, theUniversity of Kansas, and Purdue University. He has a BS in Mathematics, an MS in Guidance andCounseling, and a PhD in Educational Administration, all from Purdue University.

Visualize an x-y chart: the y-axis represents yourcompensation; the x-axis represents time. As we all have learned from calculus, taking the integral of thatcurve will yield the area under that curve. And that area represents our cumulative earned compensation!!!It’s important to negotiate a job offer. We’ll spend an interactive session addressing these topics and sharingexperiences: Can I negotiate a job offer? I’m certain I can’t negotiate my first job offer after graduating….. canI? About the Presenter: Dr. Dirk Colbry is the Director of HPC Studies in the Department ofComputational Mathematics, Science and Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU). Dr. Colbryalso does research in computational education and high performance computing. From 2009until 2015, Dr. Colbry worked for the Institute for Cyber Enbled Research as a computationalconsultant and Director of the HPCC. Mark is a veteran of IBM,where he created 5 patented technologies before moving on to deliver transformation projectsin the Financial Industry. Mark was inducted as an eminent engineer in Tau Beta Pi, theEngineering Honor Society, where he has contributed to the Engineering Futures professionalskills training program since the 1980’s. Mark is a Fellow in the CyberAmbassadors professionalskills training research program, funded by the National Science Foundation.

David Cribbs is the Team Lead for the Data Engineering and High PerformanceComputing practice at Jackson National in Lansing, Michigan. Prior to his current role, David wasthe Team Lead of the Web Engineering group responsible for the JBoss Middleware ApplicationTier and code deployment automation. He has led multiple enterprise softwareimplementations managing resources and external-departmental work streams. David has adegree in Computer Networking and Communications and he is a Certified National Trainer forthe CyberAmbassadors professional skills training research program.
