AENAES AND HIS FAMILY LEAVE THE CITY OF TROY – MILLIE CLASS 6
20TH JULY 2018
THE PLACE OF LITERATURE IN THE STEINER CURRICULUM Story transports us to Other Places. Accessibility is irrelevant
because imagination can dissolve all barriers. In the updraught of
imagination our souls can fill with newness. My dingy inner room
can glow with the radiance of a loving deed carried in by a story; my
apathy can be replaced by a surge of empathy as I walk with an
outcast, in story, and feel with him, the searing blows of
circumstance upon a scarred back.
***
There’s a link between the child’s experience within story and
his experience within creative play.
In the early years the natural child is saturated with imagination
and he pours it forth in play and with it he transforms all things,
himself included. Scanty props enable him to enter a world of
magnificence!
Play generates a creative energy that purls through the child’s
being and the child seeds in play future potentials: independence,
resourcefulness, responsibility, creativity, initiative, trust, kindness,
tolerance.
Rudolf Steiner said ”Play works from within outwards, work
from outward inwards.”

Story fires the imagination and when we open a many-layered
tale the child enters and blends with the participants there. He
inhabits story-places in the same sort of way he did, when in play, he
created his own kingdoms and roamed within them.
He moves around freely within the story and joins himself to
many characters in a multi-faceted way.
He flows along with the shifting scenes and in some deep inner
place his feelings are stirred by the events around him. Serenity,
vulnerability, satisfaction, consternation and joy rise up one by one
and take stage within.
So, once more he is a player – this time in story. Once again
imagination is his means of transport.
This new-found-play (within story) also works from the inside to
the outside.
***
Via Story the child ‘travels’ on the back of a free ranging
imagination that knows no limits; and it is this far reaching
imaginative capacity that provides a sturdy foundation for expansive
learning.
Story-listeners become adults who are skilled imaginers: people
able to harness imagination and therewith solve problems. People
who use imagination to weave between disparate fields of
knowledge and find connections.
Imagination is the wellspring of creativity; it is the seminal power
that quickens innovation.

From the classrooms…
Playgroup: It has been a lovely beginning to the Term in
Playgroup. The children have settled back in with
lavender playdough, while many of our parents have been
busy making salt-dough mandalas. Welcome to all our
new and returning families. Brea and Kelly
Founders: Welcome to Term Three! After much
anticipation it is wonderful to be with old friends and new
in the Foundation room. Looking forward to the journey
ahead. Cindy
Class One: Thank you to Bronwyn for stepping into
Class 1. David has been gripped by flu again. Back this
week!
Class Two: It is lovely to be back in our warm classroom
this week! Our potatoes have grown and so have the
children. We have begun a Literature main lesson block
where the children will create a beautiful book full of
brave steeds and hounds. Then we will begin a Home
Surrounds block on the Earth’s treasures. We will go and
spend some time on a farm caring for ponies and feeling
the possibly boggy earth under our feet – very exciting!
Stay warm, Marianne
Class Three: Class 3 continues the Hebrew stories. We
have travelled from Canaan to Egypt and then across the
waters with Noah and his Ark. We have been learning
about the dimensions of the Ark in this block – linking our
story to our recent measurement block. We have made
our clay animals for an installation in our room. If you
haven’t had a chance to see, our back wall is finished. It is
displaying the story of Creation – the seven days. We now
are in the realm of Moses. Karen

Class Four: Class 4 have started to work with the story of
the Kalevala: A Finnish saga. We have completed magical
portraits of Vainamoinen. These will hang on our back
wall this week. We have an excursion to Melbourne
Museum to see the Viking Exhibition. Very exciting! Paul
Class Five: Welcome back! I do hope everyone enjoyed a
relaxing break. We have commenced Term 3 with a
Geometry block. Early days yet, however, Class 5 have
already noticed shapes within shapes and corresponding
number patterns. Wonderful observation skills!
Cheers, Lisa.
Class Six: The Ancient Roman culture, an opportunity to
extend research skills and make presentations to the
Class in our research groups. We are also discussing the
Ancient Rome civilization and ongoing fruits from this era
in our present lives. Veronica
Craft with Lynda: We are beginning our journey together
this week. Both class one and two are finishing knitting.
Our hands are busy and kept warm with wool as we make
rabbits, snakes, pom poms and such. Class two’s gnomes
are all dressed warmly against the chill of winter and
babies have arrived, needing blankets and hats to keep
them cosy.
Craft with Lisette: Welcome back to Term 3! I am
certainly looking forward to working with Class 3 & 4 as
well as 5 & 6 this Term. So many creative knitters and
weavers as we complete the work Cindy has introduced
for Classes 3 & 4. Class 5 continues with their superb
dragons and Class 6 will begin mosaic work and from time
to time, finishing touches to their dolls.
Regards to all, Lisette

Reminder - Cyber Safety session
Wed 1st August 3.45 – 4.45pm
Ghilgai requests the attendance of all Class 4 & 5
students and a parent/guardian at a CyberSafety session
with Deanne Carson from Body Safety Australia. Class 3
parents are invited – you may like to see the road ahead –
No class 3 student may attend.
Deanne visits many schools and at the heart of her
work is the safety and wellbeing of the child. In the Class
4/5 session she will talk about basic safety on the internet
– games/sharing personal information/passwords/the use
of social media platforms.
Ghilgai and Deanne deem this session a preparatory
guide to safe online practice, we understand that quite a
number of students will have no/very little screen time, in
order to protect their exposure to digital influx… the
preservation of childhood.
This session will support your child’s wellbeing and
introduce the concept of cybersafety.
We ask that parents consider this session as part of
the curriculum/part of the school day.
We hope that this session will pave the way for safe,
enjoyable online practice. Deanne has a warm,
understanding way of interacting with students and
sometimes there’s a sparkle of fun.
Ghilgai supports this activity for the wellbeing of all
students/families and our school community. There is no
charge for this workshop.

CYBER SAFETY
AT GHILGAI
iPads, phones and ‘smart’ watches (ie. those which do more than just tell the time!) may not be brought to school.
Should this be necessary, you must…
- send a note to the class teacher
- inform your child that his/her screen must go in a class basket upon arrival to be picked up at the end of the day.
Thank you for supporting our ethos.
Ruth, for College
So far, through the kind contributions of our
families at Solstice, both Pancake breakfasts
and the deliciously, wonderful soup making
efforts of Marianne and Class 2, we have
raised approximately $770 towards the
purchase of more sleeping pods for the
homeless people of Melbourne. Pyjama day is
coming soon…let’s aim for $1000!
Solstice - $220
Soup from Class 2 - $300
Pancakes (Walk to School + Welcome to Term 3)- $250
Well done and thank you!
A very big thank you to Class Two and all who
supported them. It was lovely to look forward
to delicious pumpkin & vegetable soup each
Tuesday last Term. Such wonderful
organisation by the children to make and
deliver the soup to each classroom. Much was
learnt through the counting of coins also.
An invitation…
Last Monday night (16/7) was the
first of six gatherings of the
Lemurian Sisterhood Sacred
Circles, in Yoogali at Ghilgai.
The Circles are part of a
worldwide community of women
who, through the honoring and
support of each other, and with the
teachings of the Lemurian
Sisterhood, realise their limitless
potential, and by extension, the
healing of this planet.
As Sisters, we celebrate our
wisdom, beauty, and courage. By
acknowledging our gifts and
allowing them to flourish, we step
into our divine feminine power.

The Gabriel Talks- 2018 program
‘Wholistic Family Life: eight workshops.’
Gabriel Talks enter their 14th year with the presentation of a Parent Education Program offered in terms 3 and
4. The program of talks offers an opportunity to explore the life of the young child, and the great joys and
challenges of parenting in the context of the picture of the human being given by Rudolf Steiner.
Cheryl Nekvapil will offer workshops, titled “Wholistic Family Life” based upon the Parent Training
Programme developed by Kirsten Schreiber* and Christoph Meinecke**, which are inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s
work, and are congruent with contemporary studies and research. Cheryl helped to bring this program to
Melbourne and worked closely with the founders during its delivery in 2016.
Each session consists of social exercises and games, reflection on the experiences, information on aspects of
parenting focussing on early childhood, stepping forward into parenting our children today and tomorrow.
These workshops all build upon each other. A manual translated into English from the German edition will be
available at a cost of $10 (to cover printing and translating).
We will address topics including:
What does a human being need:
the four homes
what unsettles me, what unsettles the child, what security does my child need.
what can we do to enjoy parenting, to be less troubled; questions and reflections.
How do I become human:
the development of the child in the first three years (walking, talking, thinking) and how does this influence
later life.
the development of the will and the inner disposition of the educator.
The senses: how can we care for the senses and protect them from over stimulation.
How do the senses influence our behaviour.
My own biography, the child in me, the influence this has on being a parent.
