This issue contains a variety of material covering interesting news about the activities of the Bank and its Group during the last quarter. The Bank’s Contact Center won important distinctions and prizes were awarded to young people for the most innovative solutions in the context of the 2nd i-bank Innovation & Technology Competition. The “Show them!” campaign is unfolding with great success, largely thanks to the voluntary participation of our colleagues. Well done! NBG’s International Personnel Division deployed a comprehensive HR Performance Management System and launched pilot implementation of the system in Stopanska Banka (FYROM). Vojvodjanska Banka is supporting the Olympic spirit, as it has earned the title of Official Bank of the Olympic Committee of Serbia. The Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities hold an integral part in its operations. Accordingly, we host on a regular basis articles devoted to CSR, as well as to the Bank’s cultural foundation, MIET, by presenting its most important publications, and to the Historical Archive and its various actions. On 29 September 2005, when the Bank’s Internal Communication launched its operations, it issued announcement No 1 which signalled the newly-established institution. Just a few days ago, the total number of these announcements broke the 1000 barrier. Last, our performance in the first half of 2012 was encouraging. In our endeavour to keep our colleagues throughout the Group updated with reliable information, we uploaded 119 announcements; at the same time, our webpage received 167,890 visits. We also carried out 5 prize-draws by means of which the Bank offered 642 free tickets for a number of significant cultural events.

This year NBG participated in the Contact Center World Congress for the regions of Europe, Middle East and Africa, competing for the Top Performer Awards 2012, alongside approximately 1,500 other companies from 50 countries for 30 categories of excellence awards that cover the whole range of Contact Center applications, such as: Performance and Productivity, Challenges and Solutions in HR Management, Development of New Technologies, Strategy for Developing Profitable Models. The general conclusion of the Congress was that Contact Centers play a significant “business enabler” role in their organizations, particularly under the current conditions imposed by the international economic crisis. The Congress pointed out that there are substantial business benefits gained from the effective operation of such contact units, as they promote ongoing upgrading of the customer service function basing their operations on technological innovation and flexible organizational models. Participating in the competition were companies throughout the region that are active in the Banking, Telecommunications, Energy, Outsourcing and Services market sectors, out of which the best ones had the opportunity to present their achievement and compete in order to claim prizes. Through a strictly defined procedure including presentation, interview through questions before a committee and personal interviews, NBG gained the following important distinctions:

The distinctions gained by NBG in the categories in which it competed demonstrate the effectiveness of the innovative technological-operational environment of its Contact Center and the efficiency of its organizational structure, in line with best practices in the market.

222nd ind ind i---bank Innovation and Technology Competition: The Winners!bank Innovation and Technology Competition: The Winners!bank Innovation and Technology Competition: The Winners!

The award ceremony of the 2nd i-bank Innovation and Technology Competition took place on 26 April 2012 at the Bank’s Melas Building, with prizes totalling €49,000 awarded to the top 10 competition entrants. A total of 467 individuals or teams took part in the Competition, submitting 307 proposals. E-entrepreneurship was the thematic module that attracted the majority of proposals, followed by the environment and culture. It is notable that around 3 out of 4 competitors were younger than 40, showing that the new generation has innovative ideas and business spirit. In addition, the Bank has taken the important decision to select every year one or two proposals presenting the greatest business interest, irrespective of the award outcomes. The Bank will participate in the proposals via its specialized Investment Banking unit, in the form of private equity, and by offering know-how and advice. Accordingly, the Competition represents a wholly new initiative in Greece, as entrants have the opportunity to see their business plans be deployed with the assistance of the Bank. With a view to promoting the best innovative ideas, on 31 May and 14 June the Bank organized at the amphitheatre of the i-bank store at the Mall Athens its “Youth Entrepreneurship Laboratory” event, where the winners of the Competition presented their proposals. The 10 winners were as follows:

1. i-kiosk: management and advertisement software for kiosks The first prize was awarded to the i-kiosk team, comprised of Mr. Orestis Tzanetis, chemical engineer, Mr. Fanis Koutouvelis and Mr. Konstantinos Kazanis, computer engineers. The i-kiosk is an integrated digital services system for kiosks and mini-markets, which previously did not have a dedicated computer system. This lack is covered by the i-kiosk, which operates as a digital assistant for the merchant, by automating sales via barcodes. In addition, the platform can be used as a vehicle for product advertising: monitors located in special places at the point of sale display multimedia advertising aimed at the end-consumer.

2. Aesthetic upgrade of PV systems The view that PV systems are useful but ugly has found an effective answer thanks to the idea of Ms Madelena Anapsitaki, who won the second prize for her proposal for aesthetically attractive, multi-coloured PVs, that enable environmental responsibility to be combined with appealing appearance. An environmental engineer with postgraduate studies in Bioclimatic Architecture in Madrid, Ms Anapsitaki proposes a series of coloured PV panels, on the basis of popular patterns with a variety of designs combining high returns and low cost.

3. Interactive games for kids with learning disabilities The third prize went to a team comprised of four young scientists, Mr. Petros Georgiakakis, Mr. Ioannis Arapoglou, Mr. Michalis Boloudakis and Mr. Michalis-Chronis Volanis and their mentor-professor Mr. Symeon Retalis. Their proposal concerns multi-sensation interactive learning games based on the motion detection technology of the MS Kinect platform.

These games offer work-therapy and educational tools to help kids with learning disabilities enhance their mental abilities, improve mobility skills, motion and thinking coordination, phonological, vocal, auditory and visual alertness etc., with the ultimate aim of becoming more at ease with every day activities, improving their school performance and social interaction. The team has already deployed three games (on their own resources), which are being tested in special care centres for kids with learning disabilities.

4. Corporate knowledge management using ENTaSIS The 4th prize went to Mr. Konstantinos Christidis, electrical and IT engineer, for his proposal “ENTaSIS” (Enterprise Social Information-Management System). ENTaSIS is a system based largely on open-code software and comprises a new approach to corporate knowledge management. Effectively combining the functions of social software with smart information management techniques, ENTaSIS can be tailored to SMEs’ real work practices. The idea resulted from firms’ needs for direct, horizontal internal and external communication.

The 5th prize went to the following 6 proposals:

5. One-stop shop platform for olive oil The proposal of Mr. Nikolaos Arkoudis, graduate of the IT department of the University of Piraeus, concerns a “one-stop shop” platform, by which small and medium-sized olive oil producers can standardize by means of simple procedures their product and, thereafter, sell it directly to the international market via e-trade websites. The proposal provides for the use of a combination of optimized web marketing and CRM techniques, and the ability to use personal communications between producers and consumers.

6. Freewish: Creator Crowdfunding Ms. Elisabeth Milisi, holder of an IMBA post-graduate degree from the Athens University of Economics, Mr. Giorgos Karalis, graduate of the IT department of the Hellenic Open University, and Mr. Ioannis Venetikidis were awarded for Freewish, an idea that brings together talented creators and specialists who have the experience, skills and, above all, desire to help them realize their plans successfully. Specifically, Freewish is an integrated proposal for the realization of creative works of art or technology, offering young artists services that meet the

financing of the work via crowdfunding, marketing the work and promoting the creator via social media, and its ultimate realization through the selection of appropriate partners with the technical support of the Freewish experts. It also provides everyone with the opportunity to discover innovative, creative works of art and technology and to receive gifts in return for their contribution.

7. Clustericus.com: Electronic platform for collective markets Clustericus.com was inspired by Athanasios Mystakidis, an MBA holder from the Athens University of Economics and Business, with working experience in business development, logistics & wholesale, Nikolaos Parousis, also holder of an MBA from the Athens University of Economics and Business and experienced in the banking sector, and Nikolaos Stergiou, an electrical engineer graduate of Patras University with a successful career in software & web design. The purpose of Clustericus.com is to offer consumers and salespersons the best and most reliable electronic platform for the negotiation and implementation of collective markets. The main innovative aspect of their proposal concerns the bringing

together of collective markets and social internet tools, so as to create a new channel for balancing demand.

8. Electrical power and heating from biomass Kostas Moraitis, naval architect and mechanical engineer, holder of an MA in Aerodynamics and PhD in Optics, was awarded for the development of the “Automated machine for small-scale production of heat and power from biomass”. This idea enables the supply of electrical power to very small areas, by using biomass that would otherwise eventually rot, in developing countries, as well as larger scale energy production in developed countries. Moreover, this idea enables the adjustment of thermodynamic cycle technology to a small scale. The main feature of this technology is that the heat produced by biomass combustion is conveyed to a gas turbine, just as in aircraft engines. The biomass can be comprised of branches, egg shells, pips etc. The innovative concept that makes the idea applicable on a

small scale and at low cost, is the conversion of motor car turbo devices – which are extremely cheap due to the fact that they are produced on a mass scale – into motor engines.

9. Mobile application for Alzheimer patients Christos Xenakidis, graduate of the Open University IT department, was awarded for his mobile application (alzminder.com) which assists Alzheimer patients, medical staff and doctors. The carer can set up customized mental enhancing exercises and creates the necessary routine of activities for each patient using of audio reminders. The patients interact with the device mainly via voice commands and motion sensors. They can hang the Smartphone from their neck, their hand or belt and combine it with a Bluetooth speaker. Furthermore, the device supports the detection and monitoring of the patients’ geographical position on a digital map, thereby keeping any specified recipients informed of their whereabouts.

10. Internet TV: purchases via television Nikolaos Tsamis, computer and IT engineer, holder of an MBA from Imperial College and Panagiotis Salonitis, an IT graduate of the Athens University of Economics and Business, were awarded for their idea that enables consumers to carry out their purchases via TV. For example, as the viewer watches his favourite programme, relevant products and services are marketed via a marketing platform visible on the screen, such as the couch on which the star of the film is sitting, the soundtrack or signature tune of the programme, a trip to the country where the programme was filmed etc, while he can also pick up recommendations from social networks. The idea represents a unique link-up of TV content, commercial products/services and social networks.

“Show them!”, the “digital” CSR action within the context of NBG’s i-bank, has been designed as part of the effort to address the problem of digital illiteracy in Greece. This initiative is backed by volunteers, usually of a young age who devote part of their personal time to “show” internet applications to older people by communicating their digital knowledge. Thanks to the exceptional work and contribution of these NBG staff volunteers we ran a full fifteen “Show them!” courses during the first half of 2012 in NBG i-bank stores in the Mall, Athens, and Aristotelous Square, Thessaloniki. Our Colleagues’ participation in this project once again demonstrated our staff’s sensitivity to social issues and their willingness to devote time and energy to making CSR actions successful. Courses will continue in September. If you wish to participate as a volunteer you can send an e-mail with your contact details to [email protected] (for Thessaloniki) or to [email protected] (for Athens) and our i-bank team will be in touch with you!

HR International Division

Recognizing the significance of Human Resources Performance Evaluation, the Bank has designed an HR Performance Management System which was recently fine-tuned and is now ready for deployment. This System is governed by the principles of transparency, objectivity and fairness and aims at continuous professional development of employees, the enhancement of their performance, and better leveraging of their skills, and adoption of a uniform HR culture across the Group. The HR-International Division continued implementation of the project through a series of initiatives and played a key role in its review. Thus, taking into consideration the benefits deriving from the Evaluation System application, HR-International proposed to the Bank’s Management (and received relevant approval) to gradually deploy this pilot application to Stopanska Banka, which currently does not conduct staff evaluations on the basis of any specific system. Subsequently, within the context of its goal to align HR Procedures at Group level abroad, the HR-International intends to propose that the System be adopted by all Units. Stopanska Banka welcomed this decision and has already taken steps for its implementation. Specifically:

A Task Force was launched in Athens, consisting of officers from various Bank departments, and a similar Task Force was launched in Skopje, both of which will adhere to a specific roll-out schedule.

An outline of the Evaluation System was presented by Mr. D. Christopoulos, Manager of HR-International, to Mr. G. Bishev, CEO of Stopanska Banka, Board members as well as other top executive officers of the Bank. In addition, a detailed description of the Evaluation System was also presented by Mr. M. Makris, officer at HR-International, to the Managers and other officers of our subsidiary (25-26/4-2012).

Mr Bishev, CEO of Stopanska Banka, has already briefed the staff of Stopanska Banka accordingly via a letter-circular to prepare them for the imminent pilot application of the new System, strongly supporting this task and encouraging employees to embrace it and enjoy its benefits.

According to the plan, the preparatory actions for the deployment of the Evaluation System will

have been completed by the end of this year, while its pilot operation will commence at the

beginning of next year.

Pilot application of an integrated

HR Performance Management System

The new Performance Evaluation System focuses primarily on the following:

Targets – introduction, monitoring and assessment of targets via specified Performance Measurement Indices. The targets are set at strategic, business and operational level, determined on the basis of Balanced Business Scorecard Methodology and allocated so that individual targets are aligned with the Group’s strategic targets.

Skills – description of behaviours expected of the employees in the course of business by rank, in line with the Group’s culture, strategy and principles.

Training – evaluation of the employees’ “Job Know-how” and “Job experience” in general.

The System provides for rating alignment on the basis of a performance-level distribution curve, taking into consideration business results. Moreover, performance evaluation is linked to HR training, development, service curve and remuneration. The successful implementation of the Performance Management System will offer several benefits to the Group. In this light, we place special emphasis on the following:

clearly presenting and communicating our Bank’s business strategy, business plans and strategic targets to the staff, aligning individual with corporate targets;

encouraging our employees to adopt specific professional behaviours that serve the Group’s growth and the realisation of its vision;

identifying and leveraging talent, and adopting a single attitude and culture for the purposes of achieving business goals and ultimately

pursuing the improvement of our Group’s performance and efficiency.

This year’s Summer Olympic Games in London pose a challenge to Vojvodjanska banka a.d. Novi Sad for a range of activities in several areas to which the Bank devoted its attention in 2012. The Sponsorship Agreement with the Olympic Committee of Serbia, which was signed in 2010 and pursuant to which Vojvodjanska banka has acquired the title of the Official Bank of the Olympic Committee of Serbia, has offered a wide range of possibilities to the Bank both in the field of business operations and for promoting the Bank as a socially responsible company.

Recognising Olympic values such as leading a healthy life, doing sports and cultivating a competitive spirit, Vojvodjanska banka, together with the Olympic Committee, was the organiser of the EcOlympics for primary school pupils during 2011 and 2012. Social events with athletes who are members of the National Olympic Team were organised in 29 places throughout Serbia at which the athletes presented to the children their experience in striving to achieve top performance (photo on the right). The final EcOlympics event in this cycle was held on 24th May 2012 in the main square in front of the Head Office building of Vojvodjanska banka in Novi Sad. The athletes, who arrived in the square in a red London double-decker bus bearing the logo of Vojvodjanska banka, were welcomed by 120 pupils from the primary school “Djordje Natoševid” of Novi Sad, along with the Bank’s Management. On this occasion, the members of the Olympic Team of Serbia presented the VISA Affinity Credit Card to clients and journalists in the Bank’s Branch Office, whose use simultaneously brings benefits to the clients and the Olympic Committee of Serbia.

This specially designed credit card is an exclusive product in the field of card operations in Serbia. In addition to the VISA Affinity Credit Card, the Olympic Loan has been included in the Bank’s offering recently and is described as being “of record low interest and with the approval speed of a champion”. The promoters of this product in this campaign are again the top athletes of Serbia who will participate in the Olympic Games in London. With the athletes’ names appearing alongside that of the Bank, we are confident that the message we send to the public shows that the Bank is oriented to longstanding values.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Dow Jones Sustainability Indices Sustainability is a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks deriving from economic, environmental and social developments. Climate change, resource scarcity, demographic shifts and consumer needs require innovative and effective solutions. However, at the same time they offer new investment opportunities. Accordingly, corporate sustainability leaders achieve long-term shareholder value by gearing their strategies and management to harness the market's potential for sustainability products and services while at the same time successfully reducing and avoiding sustainability costs and risks.

Likewise, leading corporations in the sphere of sustainability display high levels of competence in addressing global and industry challenges in a variety of areas, such as strategic and economic issues, customer and products, corporate governance and stakeholders. For this reason, more and more investors modify their portfolio so as to invest in businesses that apply best sustainability practices in their sector. This development, along with individual and institutional investors’ need for a reliable, global, rational and flexible benchmark for their sustainable investments, led in 1999 to the launch of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. The index is provided jointly by the Dow Jones Indices and SAM, a company that specializes in sustainable investments.

SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment The SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment, conducted for the first time in 1999, consists of an annual analysis of the sustainability performance of more than 2,000 companies. The assessment is based on an online questionnaire, to be answered by eligible participating companies, supported by extensive documentation. In addition, media coverage, stakeholder comments and other publicly available sources are taken into consideration for the final ranking. The CSA questionnaire features about 100 questions on economic, environmental and social issues that have a material impact on companies’ ability to generate long-term value. For each business sector the questionnaire focuses accordingly on industry-specific criteria. The CSA is regularly updated and adapted to capture new sustainability trends that are likely to have an impact on companies’ landscape. The SAM CSA results serve as the basis for the construction of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI World, DJSI North America, DJSI Europe, DJSI Asia Pacific, DJSI Korea and soon DJSI Emerging Markets). In view of the above, NBG, having been evaluated as eligible for participation in the SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment, decided to participate for the first time in 2012.

Expected benefits The Bank expects to enjoy multiple benefits through its participation to SAM CSA, such as:

To improve its sustainability strategy, by identifying areas that need review To benchmark its sustainability performance against its peers in the credit sector globally To receive data regarding the average and top scores in its sector per sustainability criterion assessed To have the opportunity to be assessed for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the annual Sustainability Yearbook.

CSR Report 2011CSR Report 2011CSR Report 2011

NBG’s Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2011, published for the 5th consecutive year, has been ranked B+ in line with the GRI G3 guidelines, as it meets most of the requirements of this international reporting framework. Compared with the 2010 report, the CSR Report 2011 describes the Bank’s economic, social and environmental actions, practices and activities at greater length and covers more GRI-G3 performance indices, reflecting the Bank’s endeavour to provide exhaustive information to stakeholders. This year, for the second time, NBG assigned to independent external auditors (limited assurance engagement) the task of verifying the data set out in the “Responsibility to the Market”, “Corporate Governance” and “Management and its Committees” sections, as well as 7 performance indicators from the whole report.

NBG’s CSR Report 2011, which, among other issues, gives a detailed account of the Bank’s actions aimed at sustainable growth, can be downloaded via our web portal at www.nbg.gr.

The FTSE4Good criteria are designed through consultation with various stakeholders, including companies, fund managers, non-governmental organizations and private investors, to reflect a broad consensus on what constitutes good corporate responsibility practice globally. The criteria are regularly revised and updated to ensure that they reflect developments in corporate responsibility thinking and trends in socially responsible investment as they evolve.

FTSE4Good Company Selection Process

FTSE works in association with the Ethical Investment Research Service (EIRIS), an independent, not-for-profit organization. EIRIS is a leading global provider of independent research into the environmental, social, governance (ESG) and ethical performance of companies, with over 28 years of experience. FTSE uses EIRIS services in processing company data and assessing whether such companies meet the required criteria for inclusion in the FTSE4Good sustainability indices. In addition, along with a wide network of global partners, it identifies companies that display high performance with regard to corporate responsibility issues.

The following mechanisms are employed to access the relevant data:

Scrutiny of annual reports Research of company websites Written questionnaires and liaison with companies where appropriate Other publicly available material In addition, factsheets detailing the information held by EIRIS are distributed to companies on a regular basis for updating and review.

NBG Historical Archive

NBG’s Historical Archive participated again this year in the International Museum Day celebrations by organizing a series of events on Saturday 19 May on its premises at the Diomidis Building, from 6 pm to midnight. This year, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) chose the theme of “Museums in a Changing World. New inspiration, new challenges”.

The Archive opened its doors to the public at 6 pm offering guided tours through its museum and a paper making and marbling workshop which was held in the atrium and drew the attention of children and adults alike.

Visitors were offered the opportunity to walk through the open air exhibition of archives and photographic material organized by the Historical Archive with title “Archive: a time machine for information”. The exhibition was divided into two sections. The first section, “The present as past”, included a retrospective presentation of the technological developments in the Bank and the financial and social impact of such technological developments on the Bank, its employees and customers. The second section, “The future as past”, was presented in a three-dimensional way (photos on archival boxes) and exhibited the past, current and future changes in the archive procedures. The importance and role of archives in a changing world was explored in the video screenings that were created by a team of archivists and photographers. By means of images and a brief commentary visitors were able to view the long journey of raw data sources from processing in the facilities of the Archive through to delivery to the researcher.

In addition, the atrium hosted performances of various conjuring tricks, a photographic exhibition organized by the KETHEA in Action rehabilitation centre especially for this event, under the title “Racism. Comments on an unchanging idea in a changing world”, and two dance performances by the dance and music group of KETHEA Diavasi. By presenting the work of these community groups, the Historical Archive continues its effort to encourage different social groups to meet and find out more about one another. The attendance of the public revealed the positive effects of this meeting, turning it into a celebration.

In its endeavour to generate interaction with the neighbourhood in which it is located and with young people who are interested in the cultural events taking place in the city, the Historical Archive has been collaborating with eight artists in their personal art work, all of which are inspired by the spaces and the work of the Historical Archive while also bearing a relation to this year’s theme. To host these art works, rooms of the Archive were opened for the first time to the public, such as the corridor that leads to the repository of the first floor, to which normally only archivists have restricted access throughout the year. Through these actions, the Historical Archive, besides being an open place for historical research, sought also to form a social arena, being in dialogue with the community, a meeting place for various social and cultural groups. With a view to finding means to enrich the collection of archival and museum documents as well as the active engagement of different social players and groups in the sector, the Historical Archive provides inspiration to artists and has become at the same time the meeting point for members of the KETHEA community, the neighbourhood and Athens in general.

Theodoros P. Lianos The Political Economy of Aristotle

ΜΙΕΤ, 2012, pages 217

This book attempts a systematic and comprehensive

analysis of Aristotle’s ideas and theories on economy.

The ancient philosopher formulated economic ideas and

theories that continue to be relevant today, even though

they were formed twenty-four centuries ago. The best

life, marginal utility, the prosperous state, transparency

and accountability in the management of public money,

the size of the population and its proportion to the

country’s land area are issues of particular significance,

even today. The proposals of Aristotle for a balanced

budget, controls of public administration and the strict

accountability of those in power, the running of a stable

legal system, the implementation of moderation and

the avoidance of extremes in the possession of wealth, and

the inclusion of poorer citizens in the production process are all issues

that concern us in modern times.

The Political Economy of Aristotle is treated in terms that are easily accessible to the lay reader.

The economic ideas of Aristotle appear in his texts in a way that is fitting for the question under

examination at any one time, and are not given systematic form as in economic theory or as when

giving a strict economic analysis of a problem.

In other words, Aristotle does not deal with Economic Analysis as a separate field of research.

T. P. Lianos chose to organize the concepts of Aristotle applying the usual method of modern

manuals on political economy, i.e. microeconomics and macroeconomics, and has added a third

part dealing with Economic Justice.

Theodoros P. Lianos is emeritus professor of the Athens University of Economics and Business

(AUEB). He was born in Messene, Messenia, and studied at AUEB and at the US State University

of North Carolina. He was a professor at the University of California (Davis) and has taught at the

University of North Carolina, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), at University College, Ireland,

and elsewhere. He served in various administrative positions, such as Dean at AUEB, Chair of the

Steering Committee at the Technical University of Crete, Head of DOATAP (former DIKATSA),

chairman of the Centre of Programming and Economic Research, chairman of Olympic Airways.

He has written university textbooks, monographs, book reviews and various articles in periodicals

and the press. He is editor of the South-Eastern Europe Journal of Economics.
