Peter Block’s Community
Holding the right conversation helps
communities come together to become
accountable and committed to the ideas
they produce and the actions they take.
Typically we hold conversations
that place blame, shirk
responsibility and that expect
others to come up with solutions.

TODAY we are going to engage in exercises that can help change the narrative & highlight RCOT resources to support you.
RCOT argues that occupational therapists can be agents of change. To do this we all need to recognise our selves as leaders

The RCOT campaign Occupational
Therapy – Improving Lives Saving
Money is making the case for
occupational therapists in key pressure
points in NHS and care services:
• Reducing the pressure on hospitals (Nov 2016)
• Living not existing, putting prevention at the heart of care for older people (July2017)
• Fire and Rescue Services (Nov. 2017)
• Prisons (March 2017)
• Getting my life back: Occupational therapy: promoting mental health and wellbeing (May 2018)

• Deploying more of the occupational therapy
workforce in primary care to use our skills to
intervene early
• Occupational therapists are a limited resource. We can be
more effective in addressing the needs of the local
population by training and supervising others to be
competent to deliver on aspects of traditional practice.
• We need to support developing wider partnerships for further
innovation. Occupational therapists can act as catalysts for
addressing needs beyond traditional health and social care,
such as poor housing and social isolation.

• What is currently happening?
• How has practice changed in your setting?
• Are there opportunities to work in a different way which could impact on a wider population?
• Are there any small shifts we could make in our own workload?

…..a mental or thinking process applied by an individual in the context of achieving success.
The ability to come up with effective plans
in line with an organisation's objectives
within a particular economic situation.
Strategic thinking involves reviewing
policy, long term planning, identifying potential
risks and opportunities, then
determining priorities and setting goals

• Look at diverse sources of information – JSNA, policy, STPS & local health and social care plans, organisation’s work plan
Do your research
• The goal is to piece together the right information from a variety of sources to
generate new insights
Connect the dots
• Even if you can only steal a few minutes a day, take time to reflect upon what you've learned from your work that day.
Take time to reflect
