We all have heard a graduatefrom Leadership Wilson say: Iwas in “The Best Class Ever”!This year we wanted to select afew words from the list below andthen live them in our leadershipstyle that we practice every day.

2011 The Best Class Ever

T- teamwork the 2011 classquickly learned what theword teamwork meant as

our overnight retreat began. Wesaw that we were brought to-gether for the common goal andlove for Wilson County. The classtruly desires to help WilsonCounty be: The Place to Be!

H-humble we also learnedat retreat what color wewere in the personality

test. We were shown that thereare only four basic personalitytemperaments in the world. Ifyou know which color personal-ity you are - you may better un-

derstand your professional role, your role in a team, how youreact to certain situations andwhat you can do to improve yoursituation. So, you may hear Lead-ership participants say: “Youhave to be a RED! OR It is justfine to be a BLUE! OR Can weplease have a GREEN on ourteam?”

E-exciting is what the daybrought each month as welearned about: agriculture;

business & industry; education;public safety and the courts;health care and social services;state government; local govern-ment; lifestyles in Wilson County.

B-bold we learned that youmust be BOLD when youare a leader. You might

have to be different and goagainst the grain for what you be-lieve in. We saw that first hand onlocal government day.

E-engaged we saw on Busi-ness and Industry, StateGovernment, Lifestyles

and Local Government day howwe must stay engaged in ourcommunity to help move forwardwith the growth of WilsonCounty. Without engaged citizenswe will become stagnate.

S- support we learned how tosupport different initiativesthroughout the county

when all three mayors andcounty mayor came and spoke toour group.

T-thought-provoking iswhat this group did to Wil-son County with the group

projects this year. There was“The Power of One” luncheon de-signed to bring the community ofWilson County back together foran informative and motivationaldiscussion on the state of ourcounty. “Healthy Lifestyles” fo-cused on raising awareness and

working on improvements for the911 Special Advisory for Emer-gency Responders Program. “Ed-ucation” held a College andCareer-Tech Fair for WilsonCounty High School studentsthat specifically designed for stu-dents with a disability and theirparents. “Homelessness” isteaching the county on the manyfaces of homelessness with work-ing with Brooks House andHomeless Student Task Force.“Senior Needs” teamed withHome Instead Senior Care to ex-ecuted Mission Medicine. MissionMedicine is a community eventto provide a simple, safe way toproperly dispose of unused andexpired medications.

C-charismatic describes thepersonalities of this group.

L-loyalty is what we have toour group after our year to-gether. The friendships

Reflections on the Leadership Wilson Class

Page 4: Leadership Wilson 2011

that have been developed areones that will continue to growfor years to come.

A-accountable we learnedto be accountable to ourcommunity. Accountabil-

ity enabled us as leaders to cre-ate ownership for Wilson County. That means developing owner-ship for problems, successes, goals, initiatives, people and re-sults -- aka, getting things done.

S-skills is the plethora ofknowledge taken back toour leadership roles within

the community.

S-sacrifice comes from everyemployer that gave up aday a month to enable the

employee to strengthen his/herleadership skills.

E-empowering is the Lead-ership Wilson experienceto this class.

V-verecund-modest or shyis what as a participant inLeadership Wilson has to

quickly get over. There is no

room in these events for shyness.Thank you Lisa Brown!

E- experts is what we wereintroduce to in their ownfields each month. It was a

good representation of what Wil-son County has to offer!

R-respectful is what we hadto be to the Piggy Fines. The five things that we

thought were worth a fine are:late to class, cell phone ringing, forget notebook, dress code viola-tions and cursing. We were ableto give a donation to BrooksHouse to all the fines collectedthroughout the year.As we end the year, the class of

2011 says thank you to: DorieMitchell for leading us through-out the year, ALL the individualsthat helped make each day hap-pen, and our employers that sup-ported us.

2011 is the “Best Class Ever”.

Class of 2011 One important component of the Leadership Wilson experience is participation in a group project. This year’s class was di-vided into five groups to tackle issues regarding social issues in our community. The groups were charged with identifying a

need and then working through a solution. The projects were presented as part of their graduation ceremony.

Senior NeedsJennifer Whitener, Lisia Tucker, Debbie Pruitt, John Rossmaier, Mike David and Lisa Brown

Our group chose Mission Medicine, a community event created to provide a simple, safe way to property dispose ofunused and expired medication. We felt like this is important because the average senior takes four to six different pre-scriptions a day and refills their prescriptions 12 to 17 times a year. This program is a way to help protect them fromaccidentally using expired medications and safeguards them from the potential theft of medications from their homes. The Mission Medicine project also can help protect the environment, as well as pets and other animals, by safely dis-posing of the drugs before they are introduced into landfills or the water supply. If we get these medications out of thesenior hands and their caregivers, we could, in turn, remove the potential harm to our youth. The event took place onSaturday, April 16, from 10am-2om where people were able to simply drive up to our locations at CedarStone in Mt. Julietand Lebanon and drop off theri unused or expired medications. Leadership Wilson partnered with the Wilson CountySheriff’s Department to have enforcement officers on-site to collect the medications, put them into a locked containerand dispose of them properly. Both locations experienced a great response from the community, filling three disposalcontainers and receiving much appreciation from the public for providing such a service.

The Power Of OneChase Cowden, Chip Smith, Eric Pirtle, Jeff Gannon, Penny Carroll, Scott McCormick, Vickie Rickard

A luncheon designed to bring the communities of Wilson County back together for an informative and motivationaldiscussion on the state of our county with keynote speaker County Mayor Randall Hutto and a question and answer ses-sion with the three city mayors. Our group was challenged to break down the walls between the communities and bringback a sense of moving forward together. We chose the Nashville Auto Auction at Highway 109 to serve as a symbol ofmeeting in t he middle. Our project was a great success with over 200 business and community leaders from all over thecounty in attendance.

HomelessnessMonica Franklin, Tory Treadway, Ted Bertuca, Buddy Brent, Michael Ezsol and Jeannie Mitchell

The process of learning about homelessness in Wilson County has been eye-opening. We knew from the beginning thatthere would be an educational element to this project, but we didn’t realize to what extent we would be the students, learning about the various “faces of homelessness”. We were so struck with the many formsm of homelessness that ourfirst response was to do a project that was big, far-reaching, and sustainable for many years. Met with various obstaclesalong the way, we adjusted our plans to focus on some individuals – the children affected by homelessness as well as theladies hwo benefit from their stay at Brooks House. We wanted to continue the Leadership Wilson tradition of provid-ing a gift for the Brooks House, so we are giving a camera security system. We also felt led to help students. Through ourconnection with a Homeless Student Task Force, we learned that one of the many things being done across the countyto help the estimated 300+ homeless children is to provide “homeless bags” for high school students. We each have se-cured sponsorships for additional bags so that more students can receive assistance when there is no place to call home.

Group ProjectsEducationLee Oliver, Jan Snider, Tammye Whitaker, Maggie Jullian, Matt Pillow, Jason Smith

The Education Project Group held a College and Career-Tech Transition Fair for Wilson County High School students. This Fair was specifically designed for students with a disability and their parents. Wilson County has over 500 highschool students iwth a documented disability. When you use the word “disability”, most folks automatically think of peo-ple with a physical disability; there is so much more ... learning disability; ADD/HD; hearing impairment; visual impair-ment; physical, systemic or health-related disabilities; and psychological diagnoses. Unlike the typical College Fair, thisFair gave students and parents the opportunity to meet with the disability service providers from area institutions. Wehad 16 participating institutions representing four-year public universities, four-year private universities, community col-leges and career-tech schools. Before the Fair began, students and parents had an opportunity to ask questions of apanel made up of disability service provider experts about the differences between high school and college and how theaccommodation process works at the different institutions. This event was very enlightening for the 36 in attendanceand prepared students and their parents to know what questions to ask and what to look for in a college that best fitsthe students’ needs.

Healthy LifestylesKimbel Lea, Tammy Oliver, Cristy Stumb, Mike Wrye, Christian Stroucken, Jenny BennettOur Healthy Lifestyles project focused on raising awareness and working on improvements for the 911 Special Advi-

sory for Emergency Responders (SAFER) Program. Our efforts included:1. Securing a County Mayoral Proclamation declaring the days on which we transition between daylight savings and stan-dard time as 911 SAFER days. A copy of theproclamation is attached.

2. Preparing standardized forms for UniversityMedical Center to use in collecting pertinentinformation and submitting it to 911.

3. Raising public awareness by submitting arti-cles to the local print media as well as an ap-pearance on Coleman and Company.

4. Contacting local utility companies to requestthat they include reminders in their billing.(ongoing). We’re proud to honor all the

graduates and our own alumni:Bob McDonald 1995-96John Sloan 2005-06John B. Bryan 2006-07Hank Stuart 2009-10Lisa Brown 2010-11

Too many folks think the 10 Commandmentsare rules to keep so you can go to heaven. If that's true we're in big trouble because

we've all failed to keep the 10.The Gospel is that Jesus, the perfect

law-keeper, died in the place of law-breakers.Starting June 5th, Fairview Church will begin

a new sermon series on the10 Commandments called Ten: Trust & Obey. The 10 Commandments point out our sin &point us to a Savior who forgives us when we

disobey the 10 & gives us the powerto obey them.

Come along with us over the next 10 weeksas we learn to trust & obey!

Congratulations to the Leadership Wilson Class of 2011!

Youth Leadership Wilson wassomething I will never forget.First off, it was a pleasure to bechosen by the faculty of MountJuliet High School and then re-chosen on a smaller ballot. It wasan honor to be one of the five se-lected out of over 450 students inmy class. I thought that was goingto be the best part of the pro-gram, but I was wrong. The first time we met at Col-

lege Hills Church of Christ, wewere instructed to learn a littlebit about ourselves. This was in-teresting to me. I found out somany things about my personal-ity, and how I react in certain sit-uations. We all know who we are,but it’s interesting to know thepsychology behind who we reallyare.I never saw myself shaking the

hand of Tennessee Senator Mae

Beavers, Wilson County MayorRandall Hutto, Lebanon MayorPhilip Craighead, and TennesseeState Representative and MountJuliet Mayor Linda Elam duringthe course of the program. It wasan honorary privilege to be a partof a program that gave me the op-portunity to be able to meet suchdignitaries in our own communi-ties such as these. We learned so much our com-

munity that I would have neverlearned otherwise. We toured theheadquarters of Cracker Barrel, the Wilson County Jail, UMC hos-pital, and so many more big insti-tutions in our community. Wewere given the opportunity togive back to the people who giveback every day, to people such asBrooks House, Joseph’s Store-house, and the Salvation Army.Youth Leadership altered my de-

meanor towards my communityand showed me that there are somany good things going on inWilson County; the only problemis that no one takes the time tofind them out. I had a great timein Youth Leadership Wilson and Iwould not give back those sacredtimes for anything in the world. Itruly enjoyed being a member ofthis program. As a result of this program, I

have found interest in studentgovernment, and I was recentlyelected the new senior class of2012 Vice President. I intend topursue student government incollege, and also to be a leaderspiritually, intellectually, andbusiness wise. This program hasgiven me more than I had ex-pected and intended for it to. Itwas an honor and a privilege tobe a part of this program, and I

would like to extend my personalthanks and gratitude to Mrs.Dorie Mitchell, Mrs. Tina Hutsen-piller, and Mrs. Kathy Haskins forall of their hard work and theirenthusiasm to buy stock in theyouth of America and our localTennessee community. It has notgone unnoticed. I would also liketo thank all of the sponsors whofed us when we met, and showedus “good ole’ southern hospital-ity.” I enjoyed Youth LeadershipWilson very much, and for soph-omores in high school and lower,I recommend this program if youare someone who was given thegreat attribute of leadership. Itwill not disappoint, as it did notdisappoint me.
