About theLeadership
TrainingInstitute
Saint Paul Street Evangelization is a grassroots, non-profi t Catholic evangelization organization, dedicated to responding to the mandate of Jesus to preach the Gos-
pel to all nations by taking our Catholic faith to the streets. We do this in a non-confrontational way, allowing the Holy Spirit to move in the hearts of those who witness our public Catholic presence. St. Paul Street Evangelization provides an avenue for you to share the Person of Jesus Christ and the truth and beauty of the Catholic faith with a hungry culture.
Our apostolate has a world-wide impact with more than 300 local evangeli-zation teams, a volunteer regional missionary program, and a full-time urban missionary program that all extends far beyond the street. Tens of thousands of people are being evangelized, responding to the Gospel, becoming disciples, and fi nding faith, hope, and healing. In light of this growth we are holding our second Leadership Training Institute to form leaders in Catholic evangeliza-tion who desire to serve in their local communities.
There are three basic tracks available at the Leadership Institute:
Basic Evangelization Training September 23, 2017
For those who are interested in evangelization but have limited or no experience – or those who just want to brush up on their skills. Th e BET at the Leadership Institute takes place over one day and is taught by both experts and our new recruits. It’s always a fun time together.
Advanced Evangelization TrainingSeptember 21-22, 2017
For those with a basic knowledge of the Catholic faith, the work of evangelization, and trends in evangelization today. Th e workshop takes place over two days and is taught by experts in their fi elds.
Regional Missionary TrainingSeptember 21-24, 2017
Th is track involves an application process, and is meant for those interested in taking a leadership position at St. Paul Street Evangelization. Regional Missionary applicants attend the Advanced Evangelization Training, teach during the Basic Evangelization Training, and then attend an additional day of training to become a regional missionary.
We look forward to seeing you at the Institute!
1 Basic Evangelization Training
The Basic Evangelization Training is among the most hands on, practical, and dynamic evangeli-zation workshops available for Catholics today.
Participants will gain the confi dence they need to be enthusiastic and joyful evangelists as they overcome that very common fear of sharing the faith.
Participants who complete the training will receive basic certifi cation, membership on our online training site, and materials to engage their parishes and schools in the work of evangelization. Participants will learn through presentations, group discussions, and hands-on demonstrations as they practice using methods and tools that really work. Th is training is useful for all kinds of evangelization. Whether you want to evangelize family and friends, coworkers, on the street, or with a program at church, you’ll fi nd a lot to use here.

When so many eff orts in promoting the New Evangelization are focused primarily on catechesis about evangelization, St. Paul Street Evangelization teaches Catholics, no matter their previous education or experience, how to actually share their faith with others – eff ectively and enthusiastically.

Topics here are more in-depth and academic, yet they still have a strong connection to practical implementation in the fi eld. Each lecture is given by an expert in the fi eld of evangelization, theology, or scripture.

3 Regional Missionary Training3Track
St. Paul Street Evangelization is recruiting additional regional missionaries to join the two dozen currently working with our apostolate.
Regional missionaries are respected in dioceses across the US as leaders in the New Evangelization who cooperate with the Church to further the mission of the Gospel. Regional Missionaries plant teams, support existing teams, off er speaking and workshop opportunities, and serve as advocates for our ministry.
As an applicant, you will spend four days with other Catholic leaders preparing for and practicing the work that you will take up as a regional missionary in our apostolate. Two days include lectures on advanced topics in evangelization. You will also spend time evangelizing on the street with staff from our national offi ce, and we will teach you how to present our work-shops as well as what is expected of you as a regional missionary. You will then spend one day with other applicants teaching a live course at the seminary under the evaluation of the staff of our national offi ce.
While we hope that all of those who attend will be brought on as regional missionaries, acceptance into the insti-tute is not a guarantee of acceptance as a regional missionary. Our goal is to thoroughly vet each person who applies for the institute; those who successfully complete the institute and have satisfactory evaluations may receive an off er to become a regional missionary.
DATE: September 21-24, 2017
TIME: 9:00 AM Thursday until 3:00 PM Sunday
Cost: Free for accepted applicants. The institute, materials, and some meals are included. Housing and transportation are not provided.

Those with degrees or certificates in youth ministry from appropriate institutions will also be able to offer our Youth Encounter workshop.

SCHEDULE: Advanced Evangelization Training
September 21, 2017 9:00 am Conference 1 — The History of Fruitful Evangelization
Th e focus here is to study the history of fruitful movements of evangelization in the Church. What were the cultural conditions surrounding these movements, and how do they compare to today? What can we learn from these movements that we can apply to our work of evangelization? Th is conference will start with the event of Pentecost and end with St. John Paul II. Presented by: Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church, Ann Arbor, MI
10:30 am Conference 2 — Our Wounded Nature: How We Shape OurselvesTh e modern view of the human person leads us to believe that we are just a bundle of desires that need to be satisfi ed; that there is no objective truth that should guide our decisions. People recoil at the claim that there is truth; they fi nd it arrogant and confi ning and want to be free to do whatever they like. But we can’t escape the fact that we shape ourselves with our choices and that there are good and bad choices. Realization of this can lead to radical conversion. Presented by: Dr. Janet Smith, Fr. Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics, Sacred Heart Major Seminary
12:00 pm Mass & Lunch 2:00 pm Conference 3 — Jesus as the Model of All Evangelization
Th e focus here is to study the life of Jesus as a model for evangelization. Emphasis will be given to the Holy Family, the ministry of Jesus, and his passion, death, and resurrection. How did Jesus interact with people as He proclaimed the Gospel, and what methods did He use? What is the role of Joseph & Mary in evangelization? How can we best use their example, especially through the domestic church, to evangelize today? Presented by: Dr. Robert Fastiggi, Professor of Systematic Th eology, Sacred Heart Major Seminary
3:30 pm Conference 4 – He Who Believes: The Spiritual LifeTh e focus here is to study the saints as models of the spiritual life for the evangelist. What is required of us to become saints? How do we balance the contemplative life and the active life? What more should we do than just weekly Mass and monthly Confession? Can we be eff ective evangelists and still live in patterns of habitual or serious sin? We will study the ‘Th ree Great Ways’ and how to start on a path towards sainthood. Presented by: Fr. Ignatius Manfredonia F.I.
5:00 pm Dinner on your own 7:00 pm Evangelize Detroit

SCHEDULE: Advanced Evangelization Training
September 22, 2017 9:00 am Conference 5 — Salvation: Responding to Mercy
The focus here is to study the role of faith and repentance for salvation. Modeled in the Catholic liturgy and sacraments, the gift of the Fear of the Lord is the foundation of the spiritual life and the normal means of salvation. We will study the importance of the call to repentance and conversion to evangelization. Presented by: Dr. Ralph Martin, Renewal Ministries
10:30 am Conference 6 — The Eucharist & EvangelizationThe focus here is to study the Eucharist as the source and summit of our faith. What does that mean for evangelization? We will look at how the Eucharist has been used in evangelization. Examples will include Eucharistic processions, Perpetual Adoration, and Eucharistic Miracles. Presented by: Fr. John Vandenakker, Companions of the Cross
12:00 pm Mass & Lunch 2:00 pm Conference 7 — You Will Receive Power: Ministry for Healing
The focus here is to study the use of signs and wonders in evangelization. From the ministry of Jesus, to the Acts of the Apostles, to the saints, the history of the Church is filled with miracles, signs, and wonders all aiding the process of conversion. We will study how to pray with others for these miracles. Presented by: Fr. Mathias Thelen, Diocese of Lansing
3:30 pm Conference 8 — Evangelizing the Cultural ManThe focus here is to study the foundations of our current cultural situation and the philosophical assumptions that led modern man to declare that “God is dead.” Starting in the Middle Ages and progressing to today, we ask why it is that so many people are shedding their faith? How can we use this knowledge and everything we have learned in this institute to fruitfully evangelize modern man and create a culture of discipleship? Presented by: Mary Ann Wiesinger, Archdiocese of Miami
5:00 pm Preparation for BETThose on the Regional Missionary Tract will stay to prepare for their section of the Basic Evangelization Training on Saturday.
