DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP

It is difficult to qualitative define leadership. It is easier to give examples of leaders than

to define leadership. Leadership involves various dimensions and attributes. It requires

vision, courage, understanding, determination, decisiveness, sense of timing, capacity

to act, ability to inspire, etc. A leader is often judge by his mettle in a crisis. For

example, Winston Churchill during the London Blitz, John F Kennedy during the Cuban

missile crisis, Indira Gandhi in the 1971 Bangladesh war, Margaret Thatcher during the

miner’s strike, Mikhail Gorbachev’s break with communism and the cold war. In these

turning points, leadership made a crucial difference in the modem history. It is the same

in case of leadership in organizations.

As an effective human being, a leader should have identity, authenticity, open

mindedness, independence, responsibility, communicating, reasoning and problem

solving abilities, concern for others, rest for life energy, maturity, courage, (guts), strong

sense of obligation, clarity of mind and expression, integrity, etc. Leadership is a highly

complex and elusive trait. The above description does not clearly define what leadership

is. A leader is one who has followers; is too simple a definition. Leadership is often

define as the art of influencing others (people) to strive willingly; to do what the leader

wants them to do (often to do the mutually compatible objectives) with zeal and

confidence. It is encouraging and inspiring individuals and teams to goals. It is a

psychological process of providing guidance for followers. Leadership works with and

through people to accomplish goals. It is a psychological process of providing guidance

for followers. Leadership is one of the most effective tools of management and

organizational effectiveness depends on the quality of leadership. To lead is to guide,

conduct, direct and proceed. Earlier we have seen that the management is defines as

the process of getting thing done through the efforts of other people. Both the definitions

overlap and sense managers get all sorts of thing done through the effort of other

people, they must lead. In other words, by definition all managers are leaders.

ROLES AS A LEADER Ananda Krishnan, a self-made billionaire, dominates the Malaysian business scene. He keeps a

determinedly low profile but is rapidly expanding his business empire, which spans media and

telecoms, gambling, power and construction, and is worth just over $4 billion (£2 billion),

according to the plutocrat’s bible Forbes.

In a rare interview, given in Malaysia, he said: “I have heard some people say I have a low

profile. Why should somebody be high profile, anyway? I am just doing my job. If you say I have

a low profile, then by definition it means I should be high profile.

Yet he has always been fascinated by media. He has worked in radio and student newspapers

and was one of the organizers of the 1985 Live Aid concert. He has described himself as a

voracious reader of papers, making him potentially a sympathetic investor in Britain’s struggling

regional titles.

Over the past two decades, Mr. Krishnan, born in 1938, has been behind a string of Malaysian

businesses. He was an original investor and helped to get built the vast PETRONAS towers,

designed to be the world’s tallest buildings. At the turn of the decade, he bought control of Maxis

Communications, now Malaysia is leading mobile phone company, picking up stakes from BT

and AT&T when the two Western phone giants were struggling financially.

In Astro All Asian Networks, Mr. Krishnan has the dominant interest in the country’s only pay-

television business, prompting frequent local comparisons with American media moguls such as

Rupert Murdoch, chief executive of News Corporation, parent company of The Times.

Now he is moving overseas, with Maxis buying up mobile phone licenses in India and his

investment company taking a 35 per cent of the Sri Lankan phone company. In that context, a

20 per cent holding in Johnston Press looks more like a hobby, but all businesspersons demand

growth.

Therefore, Mr. Krishnan has the characteristics of a leader which dominates his ambitions with

well disciplined and managed his companies. He does it not alone but together with his entire

teams in Usaha Tegas, Maxis Communication, MEASAT, etc. This proves he has an credible

leadership in him.

these neighbor countries since 2000. As we can see both Mr. Ananda Krishna and Mr.

Robert Kuok are Malaysia is the richest man position number one and number two.

Both tycoons are actively in Business in Malaysia and around the world. Mr. Robert

Kuok is mainly merging in the diversity. Meanwhile, Mr. Ananda Krishna is in the field on

telecommunications. “Sugar King" Robert Kuok and telecommunications

magnate Ananda Krishnan are competing and increasing their wealth each year. It been

several years Mr. Robert Kuok are the Malaysia’s number one richest man. In these

time line telecommunications magnate Ananda Krishnan has increase his wealth up to

70% meanwhile “Sugar King" Robert Kuok around 45% increment.

These shows the range of increment in the wealth of Mr. Ananda Krishna is preciously

higher than increment in the wealth on Mr. Robert Kuok. The difference in their wealth is

around six billons and currently is only around 3.9 billion. To have such changes in Mr.

Ananda Krishna’s wealth he must had a strategic and foundations to achieve. Mr.

Ananda Krishna has studied the current economic and trend to develop his companies.

Most importantly, the number employees of his companies are around 15,000. With

owning two of the biggest communication companies in Malaysia which is, Maxis

CONCLUSION

Krishnan possesses natural leadership and ability to collect great wealth. He has great

talent for management in all areas of life, particularly in business and financial

matters. Ananda Krishnan understands the material world; he intuitively knows what

makes virtually any enterprise a success. His gift lies not with the bookkeeping or

petty management, but with the larger picture, its purpose, and long-term goals.

Ananda is a visionary and a bit reckless. He possesses the capacity to evoke people

to join him in his journey, but frequently they are incapable of seeing what he sees.

Thus, those around Krishnan need his continual leadership, inspiration, and support.

Krishnan needs to prod them into action and direct them along the lines of his vision.

Ananda draws financial success more than any other Life Path, but effort is still

required.

His challenge in life is to achieve a high level of detachment, to realize that power and

influence have to be use for the benefit of humankind. Those born with the Number 8

Life Path who does not understand the absolute and relative value of money are

bound to suffer the consequences of gluttony; they run the chance of losing it all!

Krishnan must learn to bounce back from setbacks and defeats. He has the character

and agility of a real survivor. It is not common for someone with Ananda Krishnan's

Life Path to experience major setbacks, including bankruptcies and financial failures,

but he also has the talent and the sheer guts to make more than one fortune, and

build many successful ventures. More than most other folks, Krishnan's failures in

marriage can be extremely costly for him.

Despite the challenges that life presents, Ananda will enjoy the satisfaction that comes

from material wealth and the power that is incorporated into it. Business, finance, real

estate, law, science (particularly history, archeology, and physics), publishing, and the

management of big institutions are among the vocational fields that fit Krishnan best.

He is naturally attracted to positions of power and leadership, Politics, social work, and

teaching are among many other areas where his capabilities would shine. Krishnan is

a good judge of character, which aids him well in attracting the right people to him.
