CONTINUED DEVELOPMENTThe programme continues with coaching sessions to embed the learning and continue your personal development.

EXPERIMENTATIONOur 4-day residential course offering a unique opportunity for developing as a leader.

DISCOVERYThe programme starts here with a 360° Feedback assessment and pre-course briefing.

“A thoroughly enjoyable course, it was intensive but I learned a huge amount. The practical tasks throughout the programme were good and although some seemed fairly straightforward at first, it was the facilitated reflection sessions afterwards that added the value. They allowed for the tasks to be broken down looking at the different leadership attributes; they were great for learning.

Another powerful aspect of the course was the end of course peer feedback session; honesty from peers is unusual but very valuable. These and other lessons learnt can be taken forward into the post course follow-up coaching sessions, which are a definite bonus and not something that is usually included with similar courses.”

overviewAt the heart of our development programme is our powerful, experiential four day residential course.

During the course delegates have the opportunity to work on their personal learning objectives and areas highlighted in either their 360° assessment or previously identified. Through embarking upon an intense cycle of continuous learning, based upon Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) within a completely safe, controlled but equally real environment delegates will:

• Undertake a team task (Action)• Consider the factors that contributed to the success or failure of the task (Reflection)• Learn from this discussion (Conceptualise) • Change behaviours in the next task (Experimentation)

This cycle of experiential learning is punctuated by a mixture of interactive presentations, guest speakers, group work and time spent on self-reflection.

Honey & Mumford: Typology of Learners as derived from Kolb’s ELT

IN DETAILThe cohort is split into teams of between five and seven who will embark upon tasks varying from relatively short and simple problem-solving exercises through to wider-ranging activities that require true “leadership” and effective teamwork. Everyone has the opportunity to lead a number of tasks, as well as participating as part of the team. All tasks are challenging and require the ability to deal with complex and uncertain environments, good communication, effective teamwork, strategy setting, adaptability, clear direction, prioritisation and effective delegation, in order to succeed.

Each team is appointed a dedicated facilitator for the duration of the course, ensuring personal attention and a safe and powerful learning environment. Following each task the facilitator runs a reflection session, in which the team reflect upon their performance and provide peer feedback, essentially answering two questions:

• What did we do well?• What will we do differently next time?

These reflection sessions serve four principle purposes:

1. To enable the team to analyse their behaviour and learn from the task2. To demonstrate the value of regularly stepping back from their work and

reviewing process and progress3. To demonstrate the value of giving and receiving feedback 4. Examine delegates’ strengths and areas for development

Leadership cannot be taught, it instead must be learnt. Every leader’s challenges are unique and as such delegates will all take something different from the course.

The course aims to highlight individuals’ strengths and their development needs as they lead and participate in team tasks. This is achieved through observing others lead, the use of peer feedback, reflection on performance and ultimately by providing opportunities to put this learning into practice.

The course is founded on a few principles:• Developing as a leader is a process of continual development and a

lifelong journey• Self-awareness is the first step in that journey• Feedback is vital to personal development as is taking time out to reflect

“PREVIOUS DELEGATE FEEDBACKAs a manager of eight people whose job it is to provide a large scale enterprise with client kit and technical fixes, there are multiple businesses vying for attention, and a large user base to look after. My team and I are often stretched, which is compounded by some of them working remotely. As such leadership can be a challenge, more than that it can be a fairly abstract concept.

What is leadership? And how can I do it better? Roughly sums up the situation and the questions I was asking and this was the only course in the UK that really had the potential to provide an answer. I have had death by powerpoint before, it was time for something different!

Although the course was demanding, more than most people expected, it was very much aimed at growing leadership, and by the end of the course there was a real sense of camaraderie and achievement and it gave me a new focus on my ability to lead my team.

More than that, these skills will go on to help me throughout my life, both personally and professionally. For some this might just be another training course but… for many this course could be life changing, or at least career changing, in its ability to develop your leadership characteristics.

I’m not sure if it matters if you are a supply chain supervisor, a project manager, a military commander or a technicalteam leader, I think this course, more than any other I have done, reinforces the values and strengths you need to be agreat leader in whatever field you choose.

Jane Tarver, Strategy, Programme and Information Service, Warwickshire County Council

“I’ve been managing people for the past eight years. Over this time I have attended management/leadership theory courses but nothing practical. My objective for the course was to understand where I needed to change my style in order to become a more effective leader and the 360 degree review prior to the course, was a useful tool to understand how others perceived my leadership methods. Then being a practical course it would give me the opportunity to change and build on these in a non-critical environment.

The course was well-structured and the exercises fantastic and working within the same group throughout the week enabled me to grow in confidence and try out things in safe environment. The exercises enabled me to challenge my own and others’ behaviours giving me confidence to deliver feedback in a non-judgemental way. After each task, there was time to reflect. This was the most powerful part of the course, as it helped consolidate what had been learnt.

I am now better prepared to be a more effective leader and to empower others. I’ve learned so much about myself and the leadership skills that I need to develop. It’s also given me an insight into how others lead and the opportunity to give feedback which, will help me to develop future leaders at Warwickshire County Council. The course re-affirmed what I already knew about myself, and I came away motivated and with the confidence to put my development plan in place. Since attending the course, I feel more confident, self-assured and motivated.

The main thing I’ve changed is to regularly review both the tasks that are being undertaken and how I myself am performing. It is very easy just to continue as ‘normal’ but regularly reviewing enables me to look back at my objectives from the course and check that I am progressing towards my goals.

”“For me I learned that my idea of a “manager/leader” was marred by what I thought a manager or leader had to be and I didn’t want to be “that”. But I learnt that leadership comes in many different forms and you can be a leader in your own way. I discovered that I favoured a more collaborative approach, without much of a hierarchy. Even more importantly I learnt that this is an approach which resonated with my peers on the course and is what, in fact, they expected from a leader.

”“ Having attended the course I have the ability to take the company forward and understand the requirements to lead rather than follow. It may need topping up occasionally but this course was the

springboard I needed. Anyone who is serious about developing as a leader and is honest enough to face their own short comings should attend this.

”“ It was very valuable to have time to reflect during the programme and since being back at work, I have consciously stepped back and allowed my team members to make decisions which they are

answerable for. As a result this has allowed me to work far more strategically as part of the company leadership team.

“The course was not what I was expecting and I didn’t learn what I was expecting to learn. Having said that, for me the course was tremendously powerful and has given me a great deal to reflect on. I hope that I am able to develop some of this new self-awareness into concrete improvements in my leadership and life.” Katherine Craddock, Oxford University
