• What is leadership? According to the Collaborative International Dictionary of

English, leadership is “the quality of character and personality giving a

person the ability to gain the confidence of and lead others.”

• As Christians and disciples of Jesus,

we are called to use our gifts,

knowledge, and skills to help others

attain the fullness of Christ and then

entrusted by God to use our

leadership influence and power for

good.

Richard Tyre describes mentoring simply as “a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and

a push in the right direction.”

Does having the right attributes as a leader mean you will be successful as a mentor? Possibly, but there is much more involved in getting and keeping a caring, mentoring relationship. It also takes commitment, time, nurturing etc.

Ephesians 1:11-12,(The Message), reminds us that “It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on

us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in

everything and everyone.”

• Keep in mind that although positive qualities are great, who we are is more

important than who we say we are. Being an effective leader means

something if the team we are working with respects and trusts us or wants to follow in our footsteps. Donald Clark

was quoted as saying, “It is the followers, not the leader, who

determines if a leader is successful.”(The Art and Scienced Leadership, 1997)

We must always remember that “Each steward

has his own special work to do for the

advancement of God's kingdom. No one is

excused. The Lord bids us all, "Occupy till I

come." By His own wisdom He has given us

direction for the use of His gifts. The talents

of speech, memory, influence, property, are

to accumulate for the glory of God and the

advancement of His kingdom. He will bless

the right use of His gifts.”

Counsels on Stewardship, p. 117.

• Working together brings its

challenges and its rewards. From

time to time, we should assess

ourselves to determine our styles

of leadership. This is particularly

important to know before we take

on an important task of guiding

others.

Much of the dissatisfaction among Christian women today is, I believe,

due to our choosing God as the center of our lives but not lining up with the purposes God has put within us.”

A talented person who shows heart-to-

heart interest for others and has

leadership potential can be an

effective leader if given the right tools.

Regardless of their personality type

or style, if they are real and allow God

to work through them, they are able to

learn and grow up into leadership.

“Each person is given something to do that shows who God is:

Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are

handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is

wonderful.”

(1 Corinthians 12:7, The Message)

“To those upon whom God has bestowed many talents… Help the inexperienced; discourage

them not. Take them into your confidence; give them fatherly counsel…. watch not for

their mistakes, but recognize their undeveloped talent, and train them to make a right use of these powers. Instruct them with all patience, encouraging them to go forward

and to do an important work. Instead of keeping them engaged in doing things of

minor importance, give them an opportunity to obtain an experience by which they may

develop into trustworthy workers. Much will thus be gained to the cause of God.”

Review and Herald, June 27, 1912.

• Every person needs to be

encouraged along life’s path and

to know that what they have

done, or are doing. Don’t be

stingy with well deserved

compliments and words of

appreciation.

“Change in our lives comes as a result of having our minds renewed by the Word

of God. As we agree with God and really believe that what He says is true, it

gradually begins to manifest itself in us. We begin to think differently, then we begin to talk differently, and finally we

begin to act differently. This is a process that develops in stages. Enjoy yourself while you are changing. Enjoy where you are on the way to where you are

going. Enjoy the journey!”

Joyce Meyers – in “Being a Person God Made You to Be”

The next step toward acknowledging

another’s potential is to let them

know you appreciate their efforts.

William James, psychologist and

philosopher, said, “The deepest

principle in human nature is the

craving to be appreciated.”

(Brainy Quote)

Appreciate

18

As you mentor and lead, let words of

praise flow from your lips so that

those you are ministering to or

serving can feel comfortable

knowing that at every stage along

the way to leadership they are

growing.

“If in their ministry those whom we teach

develop an energy and an intelligence even

superior to that which we possess, we

should be led to rejoice over the privilege of

having a part in the work of training them.”

Review and Herald, Dec. 1, 1904

• Keep it simple• Be personal; work one on one • Establish eye contact• Be tolerant• Develop a bond with the protégé • Relinquish control• Listen to your upcoming leader and don’t

Train

Don’t try to follow a manual or have stringent guidelines. Trust God and

keep open to the possibilities around you. The training you give is an

investment that can pay big dividends as you see the budding leader build in confidence and experience. And the

interdependence you share in the process will be a joy for both of you.

Be sure that in your partnership with your

potential leader you are on the right

track! Stay in tune with God so you

know what to do and when. With God in

control, your prospective leader can

begin to spread his/her wings and test

out the new skills. But your caring,

recognizing, encouraging, appreciating,

and training helps lay the groundwork.

Entrust

• One of the biggest problems numerous leaders have is not letting go after the training is complete and allowing the leader-in-training to lead. There are

various reasons why: selfishness, fear of loss of power, jealousy, insecurity, etc.

As we recall that God has placed each of us here for a purpose, let that remind us to allow him to work out his purpose in

others and not selfishly try to hog control, recognition, accolades, or power.

Ellen White in Testimonies to

Ministers and Gospel Worker,

says: “The height man [woman]

may reach by proper culture has

not hitherto been realized…. If their

capabilities were brought into use,

we should have twenty ministers

[leaders] where we now have one.”

(p. 195)

John Maxwell, a well known writer in

the area of leadership wrote:

“Leadership in any organization -

whether in the local church or in

some other Christian activity - is

never just a job. It is always a way

of life, demanding from those who

would be leaders a 24-hour-a-day

commitment.

“Because we know that this extraordinary day is just ahead,

we pray for you all the time—pray that our God will make you fit

for what He's called you to be, pray that He'll fill your good ideas

and acts of faith with His own energy so that it all amounts to something.

If your life honors the name of Jesus, He will honor you.” 2 Thessalonians, 1:11
