• In the US, 65% of job vacancies will require some postsecondary education by 2020– Currently, the U.S. higher education attainment rate is 40%.– Goal is to increase to 60% by 2025.

• US Resident Post-Secondary Attainment by ethnicity– 40% total rate for Americans

– 60% of Asians – 44% of white residents – 28% of African American – 23% of Native American, and – 20% of Hispanics/Latinos

How do we Motivate Students to achieve in

STEM?!


What Do They Need?

• Four critical qualities to help students motivate themselves:– Autonomy – Competence – Relatedness – Relevance.


Autonomy• Educators commonly view this idea of choice through the lens

of organizational and procedural choice. • Providing students with freedom of choice is one strategy for

promoting learner autonomy. – Organizational choice, for example, might mean students having a voice in

seating assignments or members of their small learning groups. – Procedural choice could include a choice from a list of homework

assignments and what form a final project might take -- a book, poster, or skit.


Competence• Competence can be inspired!

– Feedback, done well, is ranked by education researcher John Hattie as number 10 out of 150 influences on student achievement.• According to Hattie a proven strategy is to "build and

improve on ideas without using judgmental language.”– “Praising intelligence” makes people less willing to risk "their

newly-minted genius status," while praising effort encourages the idea that we primarily learn through our hard work (source: Carol Dweck)."

Relatedness

• A high-quality relationship with a teacher whom they respect is a key element of helping students develop intrinsic motivation.

• Four simple suggestions adapted from Robert Marzano's ideas:– 1. Take a genuine interest in your students.– 2. Act friendly in other ways.– 3. Be flexible, and keep our eyes on the learning goal prize.– 4. Don't give up on students.

Relevance• Have students solve problems and write about how they

see what they are learning as relevant to their lives.• Researchers had students write one paragraph after a

lesson sharing how they thought what they had learned would be useful to their lives. – Writing 1-8 of these during a semester led to positive

learning gains, especially for those students who had previously been "low performers."

Making It Real For My StudentsNASA Project- students created human factors focused redesign of the Kennedy Space Center Launch Room. Winning designs have been selected and the prototype and collaborative interactive workstations are in the testing phase today!

The Ergonomics Laboratory and students on my Research Team will help test different types of body cameras for the Orlando/Orange County Police Force to determine the type of body camera that is the best investment based on tests such as performance during a struggle, night-time conditions, water resistance and more.


Making It Real For My StudentsThe Ergonomics of EBOLA Project- students that are part of my Human Factors in Disaster Management Team will help redesign Hazmat suits, taking into consideration the best ergonomics and human factors for health care professionals worldwide.
