Event Description
Scouts assembled in Togher Scout Centre on Friday evening where they
completed their route cards for the following day’s hike. They also completed
other activities including making terrain profile graphs, scale mountain models
and some games.
In terrible weather conditions, the hike took place on Saturday morning in the
Paps, the striking mountains on the Cork-Kerry border. After a short while in
the Clydagh Valley, Scouts started their climb of the eastern peak. Although,
due to severe rain, hail and wind, patrols did not reach the summit of either
mountain, all did spend the day in the hills.
Evaluation
Many Scouts lacked some essential equipment, something which was exposed
by the extreme conditions. Poor levels of fitness were also evident. The route
then became very challenging. Many had not slept on the previous night,
which contributed to their difficulty on Saturday.
Special thanks to Eoin Callanan, Richard Linehan, Caroline O’ Keeffe, Brendan
Pierce, James Pierce, Denis O’ Donovan, Adrian Kay and Barry O’ Leary for their
help over the weekend
