Considerations for Selecting and Using Spray HoseOneofthemostdemandinghoseapplicationsischemicalspray,asseeninlawncareandpestcontrol.Thehoseissubjecttobothinternalandexternalstress.Internalhosestressresultsfromthehighpressuresusedandtheaggressivenatureofthechemicals.Externalstressisappliedtothehosebypullinganddraggingthehose,aswellasexposuretothefreshlyappliedchemicals.

SeveralKuriTec®hosesareofferedforuseinchemicalsprayapplicationsand,inordertoobtainoptimumperformanceandservicelife,itisessentialthattheproperhosebeselectedandthatpropercarebetakeninhandlingthehose.

What type of chemical is being conveyed?Ingeneral,lawncareandpestcontrolchemicalsfallintotwoclassifications,basedonthephysicalformofthesubstance:wettablepowders(WP)andemulsifiableliquidconcentrates(EC).

Wettablepowdersaresuppliedindrypowderorgranularformandaredissolvedinwatertocreateasprayablesolution.Thesubstancesaregenerallystablewheninsolutionandwillnot“settleout”whenallowedtostand.Allofourpestcontrol,lawn,andtreechemicalsprayhoseswillhandlemostofthesewettableconcentratesinaqueoussolutionsatnormalsuggestedconcentrations.

Emulsifiableconcentratesaresuppliedinaliquidforminwhichtheherbicideorpesticideisdissolvedinacarrierthatisitselfasolventoroil-basedsubstance.Whenmixedwithwater,thesesubstancesbecome“emulsions”inwhichthechemicalsarenottrulydissolvedinthewater.Whenallowedtostand,thechemicalswillseparatefromthewater,generallyfloatingtothetop.Theemulsifiedcarriersthemselveshaveaneffectonthehose’scoretubeand,incombinationwiththeotherchemicalsbeingused,canhaveasignificanteffectonthehosematerialwhentheyseparateandformamoreconcentratedphase.

Foremulsifiableconcentratechemicals,wesuggesttheuseofKuriTechosesusingPVC/Polyurethaneblendcompoundsinthecoretube,suchasSeriesA16�8,A1661andA1687.“AllPVC”sprayhosessuchasSeriesK41�1

arenotsuggestedforusewiththesechemicals,becauseofthepossibilityofphaseseparationinthemixture.

Regardlessofthetypeofhoseusedwiththeemulsifiableconcentratechemicals,itisrecommendedthatthehosebedrainedifitisgoingtostandforanextendedperiodoftime,sinceevenonareelthechemicalsmayseparateoutofthewateremulsionandcollectinconcentratedbandsatthetopofthereel.

NOTE:AllKuriTechosesuggestionsareforaqueoussolutionsoremulsionsofthechemicalherbicide,pesticideorfertilizerinthesuggestedconcentrations.Fortransferofanemulsifiableconcentrateinitspureform,apremiumchemicalsprayhosesuchasSeriesA4086,withitspolyethyleneliner,issuggested.

At what working pressure and operating temperature will the hose be used?Allhoses,butparticularlythermoplastichoses,areaffectedbytemperature.Astheoperatingtemperaturerises,thematerialwillsoftenslightlyandtheworkingandburstpressureswillbereduced.Itisnotunusualforthehosetemperatureinalawnsprayingapplicationtoriseto1�0°F.insummer.Theindividualpressureratingtablesshouldbeconsultedtodeterminethemaximumworkingpressureat1��°F.Ingeneral,onecanexpectareductionof40%to60%intheworkingpressureratingat1�0°F.,whencomparedtotheworkingpressuresforthesamehoseat70°F.Thisfactormustbeconsideredwhenselectingtheproperhose.

What type of fittings should be used?AsexplainedintheFittingCompatibilityGuideonpages64-65,adouble-barbedfittingheldinplacewithtwobandclampsappearstobethebestchoiceforKuriTecsprayhoses.Inaddition,theuseofspringguardsishighlyrecommendedinordertopreventkinkingofthehoseatthefittings.Properlycrimpedferrulesovermulti-barbedfittingsarealsosuitable,providedagapisprovidedattheendoftheferruletoavoid“wicking”ofthefluidalongtheyarn.

Compression FittingsCompressionfittingsdependsolelyoncontactwiththeoutersurfaceofthetubingtoprovidesealingandholdingpower.Thereisnosealontheinnersurfaceofthetubing.Withtheexceptionof��0/��1SeriesLLDPEtubing,wedonotrecommendtheuseofcompressionfittingswithKuriTechoseandtubing.Toworkproperly,thematerialmustbehardandsmoothandtheremustbenoyarnreinforce-mentlayer.

Thedouble-barbfitting,heldinplacebytwoproperlypositionedclamps,providesexcellentfittingretentionand

Clamps over barbed fittings

Intheillustrationsabove,theclampsareproperlypositionedinFigure1Aand1B,directlyoverthemiddlebarbsandbehindthefirstbarb.Thisisextremelyimportantinthecaseofsingle-barbfittings,asshowninFigure1B,sincethebarbisgenerallymuchlargerthantheshankofthefitting.Thecompressedmaterialcannotpassoverthebarbwhenundertension,thussecurelyholdingthefittingtothehose.

InFigures1Cand1D,theclamphasbeenimproperlypositionedtooclosetotheendofthefitting.InFigure1C,onlythebarbnearesttheendofthefittingiseffectiveinmaintainingfittingretention.Thefirsttwobarbsservenopurposewhatsoeverinprovidingfittingretentionorleakresistance.InFig.1D,thesituationisevenworse,sincetheclampcanveryeasilycutthecoretubeovertheenlargedbarb,leadingtoleakageandsubsequentcoverblistersorbursts.

Whenchoosingmulti-barbfittingsforusewithKuriTec

hose,asinFig.1Aand1C,itisimportantthatthebarbsnotbetoodeep.ThecoretubesinKuriTechosesaregenerallysomewhatharderthanconventionalrubbertubesandthereforethematerialcannotflowintothedeepbarb,asitwouldwithasoftrubbercompound.

Hose failure near a fittingAhoseismostsusceptibletofailurenearthefitting.Theinstallationofthefittinginvolvessomeriskofdamagetothecoretube.Thereisalsosomepossibilityofslightleakagealongafittingandsubsequentyarnwicking,particularlyifaone-piececrimpedfittingisused.Thegreatestamountofflexingoftenoccursnearthefittingateitherthesupplyorserviceendofthehose.

Intheinvestigationofahosefailurenearthefitting,itisessentialthatthefitting/hoseinterfacebeexamined.Inthefield,ifthefailureordeteriorationisisolatedtotheareanearthefitting,itisbesttocutofftheendofthehose,reinstallanewfitting,andmonitorthehoseinservicetoseeiftheproblemreoccurs.

Iftheprobleminvolvesasprayhoseandfluidslowlyleakingthroughthecoverperforationsnearthefitting,themostlikelycauseiswickingalongthereinforcingyarnfromtheendofthehoseorfromacutorbreakinthecoretube.

Suchwickingcanextendoverseveralfeetandaleakmaybeseenataconsiderabledistancefromthesourceoftheleak.

Ifahoseisbeingreturnedtothesupplierforinvestigationofafailure,itisessentialthatthefitting...oratleastthesectionofhoseincontactwiththefitting...bereturned.Onlybyexaminingtheinnersurfaceofthetubethatwasincontactwiththefittingcanonedeterminewithcertaintyiftheproblembeganatthefitting.

Temperature Dependence of Pressure RatingAsageneralrule,theworkingpressureratingsforplasticreinforcedhosesarebasedonroomtemperatureconditions.Themaximumallowablepressureforahosedecreasesasthetemperatureincreasesandthematerialbecomessofterandmoreelastic.Fittingretentiondecreasesathighertemperaturesasthecompressiononthematerialdeclines.

Workingpressureratingscanbeaffectedsignificantlybythetypeoffittingused,themethodofattachment,andthetemperaturetowhichthehoseassemblyisexposedinservice.Repeatedintermittentperiodsofexposuretoelevatedtemperaturescanaffectfittingretentionanditis,therefore,verydifficulttoassignworkingpressureratingsathightemperatures.Thegraphbelowdemonstratestheoveralltrend.

Workingpressureratingsaregiveninthiscatalogat70°Fand1��°F.Between1��°Fandthemaximumservicetemperature,itmustbenotedthatarapiddeclineinthepressureratingofthehosemayoccur,andallfactorsrelatingtothehose,fittingsandserviceconditionsmustbetakenintoconsideration.
