ENCAP SYSTEMSLEAD ABATEMENT
EPA Press Announcements:EPA Press Announcements:July 2010July 6, 2010 – A rule that takes effect today will increase protections against lead-paint poisoning by eliminating the ability of owner-occupants of older housing to "opt-out" of having their contractors follow lead-safe work practices.
July 2, 2010 -- EPA announced that it will extend the comment period for its proposed Lead Clearance rule until August 6. Under this proposal, renovation firms would have to perform dust wipe testing after certain renovations and provide the results of the testing to the owners and occupants of the building .
June 18, 2010 -- EPA is providing renovation firms and workers additional time to obtain necessary training and certifications to comply with its new lead rules.
How can it harm you?•When you are dealing with buildings painted prior to 1978 the lead paint can harm you if you ingest paint chips and dust from deteriorating paint. •Soil may have lead that may be harmful if the soil catches paint from the building structures. •Drinking water may have lead in it if your house was plumbed with lead pipes, the utility line connected to your house. It is important not to boil the lead as this actually increases the lead content in the water.
Obtaining Lead• If you touch an object with lead paint and it
covered with lead paint dust be sure to wash your hands immediately. Otherwise if you put in your mouth you are ingesting lead.• Taking paint chips from the ground or
home/building and eating them• If there is dust around the home due to
remodeling and you or child inhales you are ingesting lead.
Effects of Lead PaintChildren if there are high levels of lead which are not addressed early• Damage to body (including slower growth), nervous, and
brain system• Behavior and learning disorders• Hearing problems• Headaches• Etc.
Adults• Reproduction activity in men and women• Nerve disorder• Pain to the muscle and joints• High blood pressure and hypertension
What to Wear During Abatement?
•Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):• disposable gloves• goggles• HEPA respirator • shoe covers or booties• disposable coverall. All workers must use masks or respirators that are approved by the federal government for lead paint abatement (HEPA mask). Do not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum, or chew tobacco in the work area. Wash face and hands, and change clothing every time the work area is exited and before eating. Always wash work clothing separately from family laundry.
