    JORGENSENFootball alumnus

    dabbles in

    new sport

    Continued from Page 7

    Jorgensens ultimate goal is

to break into the UFC circuit

and fight his way to the top.

    Recently he traveled to San

Jose, Calif., to train with some

of the top heavyweights in the

    sport, including Daniel Corm-

    ier and Cain Velasquez.

    It was like playing one-on-

    one with LeBron James and

    only losing 2115, Jorgensen

said. I saw where I need to

improve in order to take my

game to the next level but it was

    a huge confidence booster.

    Bowler agreed Jorgensen can

reach the upper echelon of t he

sport within a short time frame

    because of his athleticism and

    work ethic.

Jan can go where he wants

to go in this sport, Bowler

said. Jan is athletic and a hard

worker so if he sets his mind to

    it he can make it.

    Jorgensen has a dream to

make it to the top of the sport

and said he will not stop until

    he makes it.

I got into this sport to con-

tend for the UFC title, he said.

Ive got a ways to go, but that is

    where I see myself going.

    Lea Garner has played

    courses all over the country,

but she sticks to her roots

    when determining her favor-

ite place to practice golf the

300 yard field at her uncles

    dairy farm in Idaho. Garner

    said she enjoys hitting off

    that grass more than any-

    where else.

    Garner, sophomore, has

    played golf for the majority

of her life and admires trail-

    blazing golfer Annika Soren-

    stam. Garners father put a

club in her hands at ag e 5 and

    because her two older broth-

ers were doing it as well, a

    love for the

    game stuck.

    Ive had

    so many fond

    and funny

    m e m o r i e s

    while play-

    ing golf that

    the list would

    go on andon, she said.

    T h e b e s t

    memories so

    far have been

    with my team

    here at BYU.

    G a r n e r

    started her

    sophomore season off strong

    last week by placing first

    individually at the Hobble

    Creek Invitational, helping

    the Cougars to a fifth-place

    spot at the tournament.

    A recreation manage-

    ment major, Garner enjoys

    getting active and playing

    sports such as basketball and

    volleyball.

Garner has had the privi-lege of playing many great

courses in Utah. Her all -

    time favorite courses include

    Entrada at Snow Canyon

    Country Club in St. George,

    Schneiters Riverside in

    Ogden, and Glen Eagle in

    Syracuse.

    Her all-time favorite golf

hole is No. 11 at Pacific Dunes

    in Bandon, Ore., because it

    borders the ocean.

    Garner is excited for the

    upcoming season, espe -

    cially for the locales of

    tournaments.

    Im really excited for all

    of the tournaments, but the

one I cant wait for is H awaii,

    because, well, its Hawaii,

    she said.

    In winning the Hobble

    Creek Invitational last week,

    Garner accomplished her

    goal of winning an individ-

    ual championship and also

    wants to maintain a 74-stroke

    average. Garner has worked

    extremely hard this summer

to improve her game, and it

looks as if her hard work is

    paying off.

    I t s a n

    a w e s o m e

    win for Lea,

    coach Carrie

    Roberts said

    following the

    win at Hobble

    Creek. Im

    very excited

    for her. Sheplayed solid

    in this tour-

    nament, and

    it shows that

    s h e s p e n t

    the summer

    working hard

    to prepare

for the year. She was clutch

    down the stretch today, which

shows what a solid player she

    is.

    Al though Idaho-born,

    Garner lived in Washington

Terrace for most of her life

    and graduated from Bonnev-

    ille High School. Her older

    brother, Davis, played golf at

    Bellevue University in Wash-

ington, and her older brotherConnor plays basketball at

    Utah State, making her the

    youngest in her family. She

looks up to all of them but

    mostly to her parents.

    My role models are my

    parents, she said. They are

so caring and have done so

much for me. I hope to be like

them when I am older.Photo by Sarah Hill
