LEA manufactures and/or markets special
sources designed to meet highly specific
needs in a wide range of fields. Some of
these sources are described in the
following pages. LEA will assess all other
requests for special sources.
Sealed sourcesLEA can supply sealed sources for a range of industrial or research applications on request.
All sources are approved as “special form” under IAEA regulations, or as “sealed sources”in accordance with ISO 2919/NF M61-002 classification.
Sealed sources are leak-tested (wet wipe test and immersion test) in accordance with ISO 9978.
LEA will obtain IRSN approval to import sources of this type, and guarantees to take back spent sourcesafter 10 years’ use at the latest (see Information, p. 1.5).

Cobalt-57 / tin-119 / Te 125mThese sealed sources are deployed in metallurgicalanalysis using the Mössbauer effect.
Mössbauer spectrometry is widely used in physical, chemical and biological applications to determine thestructure of materials and interaction mechanisms.
• TechniqueThe cobalt-57 (57Co) source is prepared byelectroplating pure cobalt-57 onto a fine metalmatrix, followed by controlled annealing (thickness ″6 µm, diameter 4-8 mm).
Tin-119 (119Sn) is prepared on the basis of a matrix oftin-119m with a high specific activity (>300 mCi/g)and purity over 99.9%.
Standard matrices are made from rhodium. Othermatrices are available on request. A brazed berylliumwindow and a titanium-alloy weld made with argonas the carrier gas provide protection againstradioactive contamination of the environment.
