Le Salon of Art and Design - the only event in Russia to combine the fine arts, the latest advances in design, and articles of jewellery - will be held in the Ivanovsky Hall of the Russian State Library from September 25th to 30th. Paintings and pieces of applied and decorative art will be presented in Moscow by leading galleries and the foremost international art dealers.

‘Our company’s mission in working with VIP clients is to open new markets and offer exceptional opportunities to the most discerning connoisseurs of art and jewellery. Our approach is best embodied in our slogan: “The Art of Art”. As a focal point for the cultural elite, Moscow is an ideal location for establishing marketing contacts between key figures in the international artistic community. Our return to Moscow with a new concept of Le Salon is for us a thrilling and truly unforgettable event that will mark a new chapter in our history’, commented Valentina Vassileva, director of the Art & Jewels of the World company that is the organizer of the event. The ART-Courier company and the Russian State Library are the Russian co-organizers of the exhibition.

Among the Le Salon exhibitors is the renowned Parisian Galerie Le Minotaure, which offers paintings by internationally famous Russian and Central European artists of the first half of the 20th century at major international fairs. The Galerie Vallois for almost half a century has provided original works of Art Déco applied and decorative art and furniture to both the European and American art markets and will be offering designer furniture by the legendary Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann. The Galerie Lucas Ratton, which specializes in African art, will be showing exclusive works of ritual sculpture. The finest examples of Art Nouveau and Art Déco porcelain and applied and decorative art will be presented at Le Salon by Robert Zehil, a prominent specialist in Art Nouveau, who has recently opened a gallery in Monte-Carlo. La Maison d’Art, one of the most prestigious galleries on the international art market, will be showing masterpieces by Parmigianino and Titian. The KD Fine Art gallery specializing in masterpieces of European modernism will bring to Moscow its unique collection of Impressionists including Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Portrait of a Woman depicting Gabrielle Renard and Claude Monet’s Hiver à Giverny. The great admirer of contemporary art, gallerist Stanislas Bourgain, will display works by a new generation of Russian and Ukrainian artists who are as yet little known abroad. Finally, ABA Gallery of New York, specializing in Russian art, will be showing canvases by Ivan Shishkin, Natalia Goncharova, Alexandra Exter and other renowned artists.

Among design firms participating in Le Salon, special mention should be made of the original solutions offered by Hom Le Xuan’s gallery and of the exquisite pieces from the gallery of René Bouchara, which collaborates with both VIP clients and prestigious institutions. The choice highlights of this section are the unique pieces of Russian jewellery designed by Ilgiz Fazulzyanov, whose works are in the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums and the Moscow Diamond Fund. Brilliant designs that have intrigued Hollywood stars with sophisticated patterns and extraordinary materials will be presented by the New York jewellery firm Bochic.

The Salon’s organizers hope that it will be a new gathering place for collectors, galleries, museums, and also art lovers. It will operate as an exclusive showroom where visitors will have the opportunity to examine the finest masterpieces from international art and design collections in person.

Le Salon of Art and Design will occupy the Ivanovsky Hall of the Russian State Library, which reopened 23 December 2016 after a major restoration. This unique exhibition space was created to house the Rumyantsev Museum’s art collection, which was at one time located in the famous Pashkov House.Innovative methods of museum design and the restoration have transformed the old hall into a modern art space equipped with media stations and lecture areas.

ART-Courier, one of the Russian co-organizers of the exhibition, was established in 1997 and is one of the leaders among Russian logistics providers, specializing in organizing Russian and international exhibition projects and in the storage and transportation of works of art from the world’s major museums as well as from private collections.

GALERIE LE MINOTAURE, PARIS

Galerie Le Minotaure, created in 2002, is situated Rue des Beaux-Arts, at the former address of the famous bookshop of Surrealists from whom it preserved its name. His founder, Benoit Sapiro, is fascinated by Russian and Central Europe artists of the first half of the 20th century. Benoit Sapiro has been dedicating himself to rediscover Russian and Central Europe artists of the first half of the 20th Century for more than twenty years, with a constant and passionate action. The gallery has been promoting with the same involvement the avant-gardes of the XXth century, and the so-called “Ecole de Paris”.Through all those years, more than 50 exhibitions have been held, each time accompanied by important publications: Beothy (catalogue raisonné), Kupka, Blumenfeld, L’oeil de Pascin, Charchoune, Lanskoy, Tutundjian, Vera Pagava. Celestial bodies, Geometric abstract art, and many others.The gallery has also been organizing huge retrospectives in Paris, gathering with other galleries, like the Judit Reigl’s show (2015), viewable into no less than five renowned galleries simultaneously in Paris.It will be glad very soon to propose an important exhibition, focusing on Hungarian avant-gardes at Der Sturm Gallery (1910-1932) discovering painters like Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Bela Kadar, Janos Mattis Teutsch, Alfred Reth among others, together with Galerie Alain Le Gaillard.The gallery has sustained its artists through a constant help to museum through its loans, as well as through its acquisitions.The gallery is present on several national and international fairs, like FIAC, Art Genève and Art Cologne.

For more than 45 years, Robert and Cheska Vallois have devoted themselves to Art Deco. The Art Deco gallery was opened in 1971 and since 1981, is located at 41 rue de Seine, in Saint-Germain des Prés.October 1999, saw the opening of a new space in New York City, on Madison Avenue, dedicated to the same period.For furniture and art objects, the Art Deco years (1918-1940) were a period of abundance and sophistication of the materials used (shagreen, ivory, parchment, lacquer, mother of pearl, precious exotic woods…), sublimated by great creative forms. This period has exerted a major influence on contemporary design.Those years marked the apogee of French artisans. The gallery presents the most talented creators of the era: Pierre Chareau, Marcel Coard, Jean Dunand, Jean-Michel Frank, Alberto and Diego Giacometti, Eileen Gray, André Groult, Paul Iribe, Pierre Legrain, Eugene Printz, Armand-Albert Rateau , Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann… Robert and Cheska Vallois have forged an international reputation as pre-eminent specialists in this field. GALERIE LUCAS RATTON, PARIS

The Lucas Ratton Gallery is located at 33 rue de Seine, in the historic quartier of Saint Germain des Prés. Lucas Ratton is part of an old merchants family specialized in African arts, a tradition of taste for objects, in which the gaze of the gallerist takes a preponderant part.The gallery is specialized in the African’s ritual artworks. Even if works are coming from Ivory Coast, Nigeria or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, they are always chosen according to many criteria.Classics of African tribal arts are acquired in French and international collections, which is also the case for a collection of rarities more specific and with a less conventional charm. Lucas Ratton benefits from long-standing contacts since the beginning of his grandfather Maurice Ratton in the profession, towards 1920s.Lucas Ratton has his own look on objects, which is not just the result of his famous name. He started his apprenticeship at the market of the Puces de Saint Ouen, mixing ethnographic objects and artworks. These six years have been an opportunity to develop and affirm his eye, today recognized internationally.In 2012 he moved to the district of Saint-Germain where only a small amount of high quality objects and a wide price range are available. In 2014, the gallery moved and expanded at 33 rue de Seine. This have been an opportunity to reaffirm strong aesthetic choices, and to propose major thematic exhibitions as «Animaux» and «Bamana».

Provenance: Formerly in a Belgian collection

Description: This Teke sculpture represents a standing character. Its function was linked tomagical and religious purposes. There is indeed a square hole on its chest where a magical charge was ritually taken away, as the sculpture was not used anymore. This is also shown by the crusty patina on its chest.Its small hands rest on its knees. Its face has a very high coif on its top, the beard is huge and darkened by a black patina. The whole face is carved with some ritual scarifications,surrounding a special and intruiguing gaze, made of two buttons. This is caracteristic of the great style of Teke sculptures.

Provenance: Formerly in a French collection

Description: This Baule mask is called «Ndoma» which means «double» or «replica». Herepresents an important member of the Baule ethnic group. This type of mask was used during the «Mblo» ceremony. The person represented by the mask was often present during the ritual. The expression of the mask is serene, the eyes being half-closed, in a beautiful interiority. The face has coffee bean scarification between his eyebrows, on his temples and around his nose. These scarifications were considered as attributes of beauty among the Baule. The mask has a very complex headdress that the sculptor has carefully detailed, the central hull rising much higher than the side mats. The patina of the object darkening on the protruding parts enhances the great sculptural qualities of this mask.The sculptor of this mask has become iconic, thanks to its realization of the doublemask from the collection Vérité. This Master, named «Master of Ayahu» is characterized by the rigor accorded in the proportions of his masks and the softness of the elegant traits of the characters represented. The sculptures in this hand of Master are extremely rare and poignantly expressive.

RENÉ BOUCHARA, PARIS

René Bouchara was born in Paris in 1963. After earning a Bachelor in Art from Pratt Ins-titute in New York, René founded René Bouchara Design in 1995. Located in Bastille, the studio houses numerous activities among which interior design, scenography and furniture design. Years of practice have allowed René Bouchara to work and meet ce-lebrities. Working for the Musée du président Jacques Chirac, he has staged numerous prestigious exhibits among which: Meyintang collection in 2010 (prestigious collection of Chinese ceramics), Christian Dior in 2011), Edmond Dartevelle (African art) in 2012, and le Cinquième Soleil in 2012 (Pre-Colombian art). He has also designed two Biennale des Antiquaires in the Grand Palais collaborating in 2012 with world famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and in 2014 Jacques Grange. Even though the studio activity is overwhel-ming, René’s passion for classical music has gotten him involved in the making of a parti-cular chair belonging to the world-famous concert pianist Glenn Gould. René Bouchara has earned numerous prizes: General Motors (1985), Grand Prix du design de la ville de Paris (1996), Prix de la presse international du salon du meuble de Paris (1997) and Prix du Nombre d’Or (1997),... More recently, René Bouchara has delivered in the African country of Benin a museum: Le petit musée de la Récade.

Since its launching in California in 1982, the Robert Zehil Gallery has continued to honour the finest examples of Art Nouveau and Art Deco European Fine and Decorative Arts. Now located in the exclusive Carré d’Or in Monte-Carlo, the gallery permanently exhibits paintings, furniture, sculpture, silverware, enamels, objets d’art, glass, ceramics, jewellery and illustrated books by the most renowned artists from the 1890s Belle Epoque to the 1930s. The owner, Robert Zehil, has been a dealer for nearly forty years and is proud to have the most important Art nouveau inventory in the world in private hands. He has highly contributed to supplying museums and collectors in Japan, the United States, and Europe. He has regularly lent and also donated works to museums exhibitions all over the world and his name is in many books written on the subject.In 2014, the gallery led by its new Director, Deborah Biermann, got involved in international art fairs: Masterpiece London, Design Miami/ Basel, le Salon Moscow, PAD London up to today. The gallery edits a yearly catalogue, and works actively on the promotion of Art Nouveau worldwide. Besides, we are currently working on thematic publications featuring the work of major early 20th century French artists and designers.

Public NotesPainted circa 1912, Portrait de Femme, Gabrielle Renard is a vibrantly executed example of Renoir’s masterful late portraits. The lively brushwork is accentuated by the vivid palette chosen to depict the artist’s longstanding model. During his long career, Renoir painted the portraits of a wide range of sitters: fellow artists such as Alfred Sisley and Claude Monet, affluent patrons such as Madame Georges Charpentier, and dealers including Paul Durand-Ruel and Ambroise Vollard. His own family also sat for him frequently and in his art one can follow the development of his three sons, Jean, Pierre and Claude, as they mature from infancy to adolescence. Individually each representation of Gabrielle served to explore Renoir’s capacity for greater Impressionistic effects. This example of the artist’s mature oeuvre displays his pre-eminence at rendering light as it fell upon the human form. By the time he painted the present work, Renoir was renowned as the finest portrait painter of the Impressionist circle. His portraits of women in particular received overwhelming praise from his contemporaries and were admired for their sweet docility and sensual allure. The critic Théodore Duret later wrote: «Renoir excels at portraits. Not only does he catch the external features, but through them he pinpoints the model’s character and inner self. I doubt whether any painter has ever interpreted women in a more seductive manner. The deft and lively touches of Renoir’s brush are charming, supple and unrestrained, making flesh transparent and tinting the cheeks and lips with a perfect living hue. Public NotesIn the winter of 1885-86 Monet painted several views of Giverny and the neighbouring Limetz under snow. A town situated on the outskirts of Paris, Giverny would become synonymous with the most innovative compositions of the artist’s career. Monet moved with his family to Giverny in April 1883 and remained there for the rest of his life. In 1890 he bought a house and a large garden there, which provided the site for his legendary Nymphéas compositions at the turn of the century. According to Daniel Wildenstein, the present work was painted on the road between Limetz and Giverny and the houses at the edge of Giverny as well as the Cossy mill are visible immediately to the left of the road, facing the marsh. In the background are the hills on the right bank of the river Epte (D. Wildenstein, op. cit., 1996, p. 400).

Executed at the height of Monet’s Impressionism, Hiver à Giverny exemplifies the artist’s life-long commitment to painting en plein air, exploring the effects of weather conditions and light at different times of the day on the surrounding landscape. The present work offers a vibrant contrast between the ochre and brown tones of the ground and trees, and the icy blue and white tones of the snow-covered hills and water, evoking the atmosphere of stillness and tranquillity of a winter day. The undulating lines of the foreground and a few figures walking along the diagonal of the path take the viewer’s eye towards the centre of the composition, the hills rising in the background and the icy sky above them. The unique properties of winter light presented temporal and tonal challenges that appealed to Monet’s most profound sensibilities as a landscape painter. By the time he painted Hiver à Giverny in 1886, he had already established himself as the leading landscape painter among Impressionist artists, and his pictures from this era exemplify his interest in the transformative power of the elements on the natural world.

ILGIZ FAZULZYANOV, MOSCOW

Ilgiz Fazulzyanov is one of Russia’s most eminent jewelry artists. He became a jeweler almost by chance. In 1995, Ilgiz discovered the art of stone enameling and mastered it on his own in a matter of just two months. It took him several months to create a collection for an exhibition in France, which garnered Ilgiz the title of the “Champion of enamel” in the Madame Figaro magazine article. From that moment on, the stoving enamel became his favorite technique and the trademark of his art. Today, Ilgiz Fazulzyanov is one of the world’s few jewelers with virtuoso mastery of all the classical techniques of hot jeweler’s enamel. In 2011 and 2013, Ilgiz Fazulzyanov won the highest awards of the International Jewelry Design Excellence Award in Hong Kong. In 2011, he won the prize for his “Bullfinches” pendant, and in 2013 confirmed his title by presenting the “Eclipse” set of earrings and ring made with black faceted pearls. Today, this set is kept in the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.In 2014, Ilgiz received the Grand Prix of the “Russia. 21st Century” jewelry competition organized by Russia’s State Precious Metals and Gems Repository Gokhran. He presented a collection of five works, the most prominent of which, the “Crows” pendant, is also now kept in the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.Year 2016 was marked a special milestone in the history of this jewelry brand. The exhibition hall at the Belfry Tower of the Moscow Kremlin hosted a personal exhibition of Ilgiz Fazulzyanov.In 2017 year Ilgiz opened his first personal gallery in Paris (4, rue Miromesnil, 75008) nice and cozy space in the centre of the city. The majority of Ilgiz’s works are kept in private collections in Russia, Italy, France, Great Britain, Japan, the United States, and other countries.
