Peer Tutoring Now Available!
We are excited to announce a new opportunity for students in grades 7-9
to work with a peer tutor after school! Some of our National Junior
Honor Society members have offered to tutor students in grades 7-9 who
are in need of extra one-on-one instruction. It will typically be held in
room 317 from 2:15-3:00, but can also be scheduled in other locations
within the school. If you have any students who you think would benefit from this opportunity, please contact
our NJHS advisor, Mr. Tim Knisley at [email protected]. This type of support has been very successful in
other schools and we are excited to give it a try here. This past week was the first week we offered it, and we are
off to a great start! Please consider taking advantage of it!

Sectional Champions!
Congratulations to our Varsity Cheerleaders who captured their second straight Section V Division 2 Small B Title last weekend! The Knights rose to the top of their division beating out perennial powerhouse Avon by 1 point to win the title at RIT’s Gordon Field House. The team is coached by second year coach Jamie Turman, a 4th grade teacher at Wolcott Street School. Coach Turman has done an amazing job with this very talented team of underclassmen. They competed in 7 regular season competitions, winning them all including 4 Grand Championships. The girls have performed under the toughest pressure at times this year and are not phased by it at all! We can’t be more proud of the girls for how they have represented our school and community. I encourage you to check out the videos on our Twitter and Instagram of their incredible win! The team left today for the NY State Cheerleading Competition, which is being held at the SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga CC, the same site they performed at last year coming in 4th in the state! They will perform tomorrow morning at 10:15am, and then, if they qualify, they will move to the final round tomorrow night. Stay tuned to our Twitter & Instagram accounts for up to date information! We are so excited for this team and want to congratulate them and their families for their amazing run this year!

USBs...Nope - Vaping!
In an effort to continue to inform everyone of the ever revolving
nicotine game, I would like to focus on this product and the many like
it. “Smoking Evolved” is the slogan, so much so that it looks like a
USB stick for your computer. This is half correct, these sticks are
powered by lithium ion batteries and are charged through a USB
charger. The look and feel of the product may not give kids the sense
that they are doing something addictive, but they are. Those small
little pods on the picture to the right each pack the same amount of
nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes but in fruity tastes. While
conventional vape juices typically go up from 0 mg/ml to 36mg/ml,
with 16 mg/ml being the dosage of a typical cigarette, these Juuls
shown in the picture are 56mg/ml. Nicotine in any form is a highly
addictive drug. Research suggests it can even prime the brain’s reward
system, putting vapers at risk for addiction to other drugs. We have confiscated these and other types of vapes
this year here at school and encourage all families to be aware that vaping is not an alternative; it is just not good
for you. We encourage families to have open conversations about it and to also make sure students do not leave
their homes with vapes en-route to our school! More Information:

Luckey = MVP!
I would like to congratulate Gavin Luckey who was awarded the Section V Class D Outstanding Male Field Event Performer last Friday at the Section V Winter Track & Field State Qualifiers! Gavin finished 1st in the High Jump, 2nd in the Triple Jump and 4th in the Long Jump at sectionals which led to him earning this top honor! Congratulations to him and Coach Laitenberger for the tremendous success this season!
Scholar Athletes!
Our Oatkan Knights continue to shine not only in competition but in the classroom, where it really counts! This week we released our 2018 Winter Season Varsity Team results! NYSPHSAA recognizes varsity teams with 75% of the roster having an average GPA of 90.0 or above. Teams are recognized with a certificate and individuals on the team who have an overall average of 90.0 or above receive a pin. I cannot thank our student-athletes enough for understanding the importance of setting their priorities. Special thanks to our parents, coaches, and teachers who also foster this success through their efforts! Let’s keep it going!

Knights Off Campus! By Jordyne Amo - 11th grader
Over February break, I had a once in a lifetime experience on a
Young Life mission trip to Taura, El Salvador in Central America.
My team and I, 26 of us in total from Rochester, combined with
Buffalo, Syracuse, and Boston, all set out to help our individual
villages with one large project in each village alongside having a
medical clinic open for families to visit and see the doctor for their
yearly check-ups. The group I went with has been visiting El
Salvador for over a decade and has helped by creating clean water
systems, irrigation systems, and many more projects. This year,
our job was to tear down an old crumbling house, which was made
out of tin and wood, and begin to rebuild a new one in its place. Throughout my week in El Salvador, I
experienced unexplainable things. I saw poverty at its highest, while also seeing joy at its highest. The
amount of joy that the people had was unthinkable. They were so happy and thankful for absolutely
everything they had. I learned a lot about not only their culture, but about myself as well. I learned to be
humbled, and to be grateful for everything I have. I learned that joy doesn’t come from materialistic items.
Joy comes from your heart. Joy comes from being blessed to have the things you possess, whether that be a
lot, or barely anything at all. I went to El Salvador with the mindset that I was going to help bless the
country by helping, and we did that. But what I was blessed with was even more priceless. I was blessed
with relationships with the children and families that will last forever. I was blessed by the joy I saw in their
eyes every time we came back to the village after a meal. We may have blessed them, but I was blessed by
them way more than anyone could ever imagine.
