Ending ClassStay seated until the bell rings at the end of the period.

Bathroom PassesTake care of nature before class starts. In the event of an "emergency," you have one pass for emergency bathroom use per week.

HomeworkYou will have homework a few times per week. I do not accept any late homework unless you were absent the day it was assigned.

AbsencesWhen you come back from an absence:1) check the notebook in the tray on top of the filing cabinet to see what you missed and pick up any handout with your name on it2) turn in any homework that was due on the day you were absent

You have as many days as you missed to make up work (for example, if you were absent two days, you have two days to turn in missed work). I do not accept late make-up work.

GenderWhat "gender" do you commonly associate with the following things: masculine (male) or feminine (female)?

• Uncle ______________• Aunt ______________• Doctor ______________• Tee-shirt ______________

In English, some nouns are associated with a gender. Uncles are men, aunts are women. However, doctors can be either men or women. Things, like tee-shirts, don't have a gender in English.

In French, every noun has a gender: people. things, places, and ideas. So, a tee-shirt is masculine: le tee-shirt. A dress shirt is feminine: la chemise. There is no real rhyme or reason to gender in French. You will need to memorize the gender of nouns.

One easy way to tell a noun's gender is to look at the word that comes before it:

• le and la are all ways to say "the"◦ le tee-shirt: the t-shirt. le is masculine◦ la chemise: the dress shirt la is feminine

• un and une both mean "a"◦ un tee-shirt: a t-shirt un is masculine◦ une chemise: a dress shirt une is feminine

Note: "Le" and "la" are both used for one thing: "the t-shirt" or "the dress shirt." If you have just one thing, we call it singular.

In your clothing vocabulary, you will see "les" before things like shoes, socks, sandals, and boots. This is because you have more than one of these things--you have two shoes, for example. When you have more than one thing, it is said to be plural. "Les" means "the" and just shows that the word is plural. It does not show you the gender of the thing. For now, you only need to know that all of the plural things in your list--socks, shoes, sandals, and boots--are feminine.

25

PratiqueDivide the following words into two columns, masculine and feminine, using what you know

about "le" and "la", as well as "un" and "une"

une pizza un papier une radiola banane la géographie le volley-ballun zoo une tomate un fruitle steak la boulevard le football

Masculine Feminine

Now, using your clothing vocabulary list from page 34, separate the words into masculine and feminine columns.

Masculine Feminine
